I think we’re overthinking this especially with the current Apple hardware “geniuses”. It’s just going to be two Airs slapped together including the camera module.

I hope not! The Air already weighs a massive 165g (5.8oz), so you can do the math if it's two Airs. Better start weight training in the gym ...

Given me an iPhone Nano (31g) any day!

Exactly. 240g is even heavy by today's standards. My Z Fold 7 weights 215g.

The iPod nano came in at 31g (1.1oz) and the iPod touch at 88g (3.1oz). An iPhone at either weight and size would be a little jewell and restore my faith in Apple's ability to innovate. Unfortunately, all we are going to get is bigger and heavier phones. It's no coincidence that Apple now sell a CrossBody Strap, phones are too big to fit in pockets.

Size matters. Small and light is smart.

A surprising amount of people seem turned off by the idea of an iPhone Fold but for me, this is the first time I’ve been truly excited for a new iPhone since the iPhone X.

The only things I’m feeling somewhat nervous about are the rumors of the smallish 5.5” cover display and only having 2 cameras. As a Pro Max user for several years, those would be downgrades. It will be interesting to see how Apple markets this phone compared to the Pro lineup.
Yes. Have been waiting a long time for a foldable from Apple. Have always liked the Z Fold but never bought one. The rumors regarding the smaller screen and the foldable having only 2 cameras, potentially missing out on the telephoto/zoom are quite disappointing. Would like to hear more about the aspect ratio of the outer and inner screens. Hoping that the screens will be big enough and the device will have a zoom lens.

Solves a problem that doesn't exist, 6+ years after the competition launched their folding phones.
Friends I have that had LG and Samsung foldables got them at extreme discount, and said they would never buy another foldable phone (crease in the screen that forms, grit and dirt that gets on the screens grinds in your pocket, etc)

Many people own an iPhone and iPad.

A foldable iPhone will combine the two. This is very practical if you travel alot or find it less eye straining to use a tablet for 20min+ media consumption.

I think it will sell incredibly well.

Apple folding phone release depends on how far the business agreements with Oppo have progressed. Or, from which to copy from...

However, combining the two would mean that you would have neither a compact smartphone nor a sufficiently large tablet. In practical terms, this would be rather impractical. 😂

Let's be honest: for years, we were thrilled that the thick, heavy cell phones of the early days had been replaced by light, small devices. Now we're heading back in the other direction.

As it approximates two phones next to each other, I'd expect the screen to use about twice the power for that alone.

As each side will be thin, I expect the camera to be more limited than the ones they can fit, even then needing bumps, into devices like the 17 Pro. Indeed, even the 17 Air.

As I have an iPad mini, and often use that when I want a larger screen than my 15PM, I am already well aware that even a screen of about that size gets frustrating compared to an 11" or so iPad. Still appreciate it, and it is much lighter than an iPad Pro! But I wouldn't be that keen to spend the extra for a folder.

Many people said the same thing about large Android phones when iPhone displays was 4 inches.

Fast forward today and the top selling iPhones are more than 6 inches. Both 12 and 13 mini flipped to the efter thet they were discontinued with iPhone sales being unaffected. :)

The foldable iPhone will likely be an iphone air sandwich. That will only be a few millimeters thicker than an iPhone pro.

Beyond the hinge issue that comes with a folding screen, the other big problem that I see needing resolution is the softness and imperfection of the surface of the interior screen. It harkens back to a time [that so many people just haven’t experienced] when touch screens were made using a thin film cover that too easily could be dented and damaged, even by a fingernail.

And this was when touch screens were not touched nearly as much because the software just wasn’t built around an all-touch interface. Every time I’ve tried a recent foldable, I’m surprised by how irregular and imperfect the feel of the screen is, and question how people put up with the softness and feel of using these devices.

When Apple introduced the original iPhone with its glass covered screen, it was, in my opinion, one of the biggest shifts in tech. Touch screens where what you touch is rigid, solid and unforgiving became the standard after years of the plastic screened devices, and I’m just not willing to go back to using a similar type of touch screen today, knowing it will not survive regular daily use.

I am looking at my 16 Pro Max right now and thinking how great it would be if it folded out into something twice the size so it's like a smaller version of my iPad at home............. I'm not really 🤣

I won't be buying a folding iPhone lol.

Aspect rations is a huge concern for me. Youtube vidoes and even tiktok shrots are in a 16:9 or 9:16 format. If the inside of the iPhone Fold has a 4:3 ratio then, you will have black bars and therefore videos won't be meaningful biger than on a Plus phone.

Therefore the dditional real estate is in vain and not utilised. That is unless apple makes a trifolding phone.

Almost all folding phones seem to be symmetric. Two identical (or near-identical) screens side by side (or above and below).

My mind keeps imagining an asymmetric screen device. Possibly allowing a thicker part for a camera bump. Or a part which is never covered acting as an alert/clock/whatever area. Or some combination.

Of course this might be difficult and present challenges. But I think it merits deeper consideration.

That is about the silliest thing I've read on this forum in a long time--AND probably one of the most clever! Genius! I have a lazy right eye too.

I read your first two posts, and my brain was hearing the pronunciation in a British accent for some reason...then I read your third post. Surely you were cracking yourself up while posting that...I know I would have been cracking myself up.

My entertainment cup is full for the day. And I'm still chuckling...well played man.

Wouldn’t be a totally new iPhone rumor without liquidmetal being mentioned!
What is interesting is the assumption being made that Liquidmetal offers some inherent strength benefit over normally cast or machined metal. That’s not, from my understanding of the process and product, the benefit of Liquidmetal, rather it’s the fact that parts can be made in a process similar to injection molding. In other words, it’s more efficient to produce parts using Liquidmetal processing, not that they’re going to be stronger.

I wonder how Apple would market the phone?

Android: Multi tasking
Samsung: Business usage e.g view documents and PDFs.

Multi-tasking isn't a thing on iPhones.
Viewing documents and PDFs is hardly sexy in marketing.

Just came here to say (I know y'all been waiting for this) that I am super excited for the new iPhone fold, as a previous user of Fold 2,3 and 5. I really hope that the inner tablet screen acts closer to iPad than iPhone. My fingers are crossed!

Indeed to each their own. If I want more screen real estate than my iPhone mini for a particular task, I would switch to using my iPad or laptop.
I used to think the same thing, until I bought my first foldable. Now, my wife uses my iPad and my non-gaming laptop collects dust. If I want to do any work on a large screen or if I want to do any gaming, I use my Alienware laptop. Otherwise, I just use my Z Fold 7. Another bonus feature on the ZF7, that I hope Apple duplicates in their own way, is Dex. I can mirror a desktop environment on most any new TV from my ZF7 using Dex. So, if I really need to, I can do desktop work from my Z Fold 7 as well. A friend of mine uses his Z Fold running Dex at work exclusively. What a world.

Switching from iPad mini to folding phones makes sense since the unfolded size is comparable.

11 inch iPads (which I have) are still bigger than unfolded phones though
They are working on this with tri-fold phones. The Mate XT has a 10.2 inch inner display when it is fully unfolded. They are getting there. I personally don't need a bigger tablet than 8", so I'm not interested in the tri-fold phones. But, I think it is a good thing for those who want a larger than 8" tablet when the phone is unfolded.

People do all those things just like they have for many years, fine and dandy, on slab phones. If a foldable floats your boat, great! Unless they get very thin and light, I'll not be stashing one in my pocket.
People road around on horseback fine and dandy for many years as well...
