Interestingly, nothing major changed in 20 years. I think Chinese phones progressed more. Also if you look at a company like DJI - the progress on drones is huge. But not the iPhone

There is zero reason to believe this is true. Would it be magical to get under display FaceID to not ruin our user interaction with the design, yes. Apple is so focused on irrelevant crap that they cannot innovate. Focused on Apple Car, Vision Non Pro, and just about anything else that they now are in the business of make believe what they can do, for example the new Apple Intelligence and Siri. They can't handle simple things that competitors have done for years. This year's iPhone they're stepping down to Aluminum frames. Somehow two years later they're going all glass with display wrapped around it. Won't believe it, and even if they pull it off, it will be a joke. Much more likely that Tim Crook is gone and a visionary steps in before Apple can truly innovate. They're not going to fix Apple Intelligence without buying not just IP but also a team of coders and leader who can actually make it happen. Apple has been stagnate with the same leaders who aren't visionaries for a long time. Can Craig talk a good game, sure. Can they make a great SoC, sure. But they want to own the whole vertical and horizontal production. And their anticompetitive business mode will come tumbling down. I call BS on the all glass iPhone while Tim is at the helm. He will do anything to save a buck for the shareholders and rake in $100m annually in stock vesting. He doesn't care about anyone but his shareholders which means himself, as that's who determines his pay. Cannot wait for Tim's days to be over and a real visionary to take the helm. At least at a level equal to the financial decisions. Tim has sold the future for the present. Too many CEOs do this thanks to GREED.
Maybe an anniversary version of the iPhone 3G but without Home Button. Just size, new chips and design
I think Apple will name the anniversary model as iPhone XX. The other models launched in the same time could be called iPhone 19. Eagerly waiting to hear all about the anniversary edition in the coming months. From all the preliminary rumors, it looks like it will be fantastic iPhone.

We have to think about an another name for the anniversary iPhone than XX. I don’t believe in that. Apple will not go this way. Just think about next 10 years from now and we will get the iPhone XXX. Does it ring the bell?

Design
The 20th anniversary iPhone that Apple is planning for 2027 could feature a radical design, offering a display that has no visible frame or bezels. An early rumor suggests that Apple is aiming for a display that curves around all four edges of the device, for a borderless visual experience.
Apple wants a mostly glass iPhone with a curved display and no cutouts, which would necessitate under-display Face ID and an under-display camera.
An all-glass iPhone with a wraparound display that covers all four edges of the device would be less durable than current iPhone models that have titanium or aluminum frames, so Apple may need to come up with more durable glass before such a device is a possibility.
Battery
Apple is developing new battery technology that could make it into the 2027 iPhone models. RAM
Apple could use advanced AI memory technology for the 2027 iPhone models. Apple is rumored to be considering Mobile High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a type of DRAM that stacks memory chips vertically and connects them through tiny vertical interconnects to boost signal transmission speeds.
In smartphones, the technology would provide high data throughput while minimizing power consumption and the physical footprint of RAM dies.
Name
Technically, the 20th anniversary iPhone lineup would be the iPhone 19 lineup, but in 2017, Apple released a surprise "iPhone X" alongside the iPhone 8 models. This year, Apple could have similar plans for the high-end device, though what it might be called is unclear.
Apple could decide to call it the iPhone 20, like the decision it made for the iPhone X in 2017, or the company could stick with the iPhone 19 naming. Alternatively, the all-display device could have an entirely new name, like iPhone Ultra.
The iPhone that Apple has planned could be a replacement for the iPhone Pro models, or it could be sold alongside them. With plans for a foldable iPhone in 2026, though, it may not make sense to add yet another phone to the lineup.

Much truth to that. Almost all we get now are eye-candy changes, leftover bugs, new bugs, and virtue signaling. <shrug>
Progress in different categories is always going to differ based on consumer demand, cost, complexity etc
Comparing drones to iPhones is odd.
Phone technology has mostly plateaued everywhere. It’s all incremental changes, mostly.
The big changes in coming years will be on battery capacity and AI compute ability within a restricted power envelope.
Silicon-based batteries are the next tech. Oppo has already used it in one or two phones.Time to drop the lithium battery and start using fuel cell technology.📱
