She looks exactly like a typical 富婆…… (Those wives who are filthy rich, typically middle-aged women who wear fur coats all the time and live for brand names here in China) Honestly, Apple's money would have been better off going to a charity... x.x

the winner should have been some fat hairy guy wearing a greasy dirty wifebeater from mississippi and the app he downloaded? some sort of sex position thing... PR Nightmare..

I know; I'd rather have a tenth of the value in a regular Apple Gift Card. But it still would be hard to complain about receiving the iTunes gift card.

Can't you use iTunes credit for in-store instant purchases - like for the smaller items that are on the shelf - using the Apple Store app?

So load up on AppleTVs and base stations, then fence them on eBay.

(snip)
it's FREE MUSIC, MOVIES, TELLY SHOWS, BOOKS AND APPS FOR YOUR COMPUTER AND PHONE. FOR YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. You will never have to pay for music ever again. that's what use it is.
..not sure about in the mainland China iTunes store, but here in Hong Kong there is still NO music, NO Movies, NO telly shows on the iTunes store :(

I think something is lost in translation. "not a big fan" does not mean "She does not like Apple". It just means she has not been buying Apple products for long (for whatever reason).

I agree. The original line 傅春莉并非一个苹果发烧友 simply says that she really isn't an Apple 发烧友, which means fan, enthusiast, or fanatic (or even 'audiophile'). So to say she doesn't like Apple is an interpretation, not a translation.

hahaha - is that a fake bag?

Pretty sure this lady could have spent 10K better at the copy/fake YaShow market next to the Sanlitun store. Hope Apple checked the bag before distributing the photo.

I don't know what I would do with a $10,000 itunes gift card. I mean that's a huge amount of money for music, videos and apps.

Can she use it to buy apple hardware???

The Mac App Store uses your iTunes account, so I would find plenty to purchase... Final Cut Pro, Aperture, etc. That money could be pretty useful and go pretty quickly.

No. It's an iTunes Gift card; so she can purchase apps/music/movies/books. I don't know about you, but $10,000 to buy music/movies has a lot of use for me.

I think I could blow 1k on books, 1k on apps, 1k on movies, 1k on music and 1k on tv shows in 4-5 weeks without trying hard. That is half the money there and then the rest allows you to indulge for a while.

I would never spend that much now but I could easily do it with a 10k card

What a coincidence that Apple is focusing a lot of Chinese development and the winner is from China.......

you are being sarcastic, right? it's not a coincidence. she deserves to win as much as anyone else--i'm not complaining AT ALL. but no way does apple just "randomly" pick the person who downloaded the X-billionth whatever for these things. someone in the Chinese market was probably deliberately chosen from among possible winners.

Yeah that is absurd. The chances that a Chinese person won were pretty decent. It is absurd to think Apple rigged such a contest. Wholly unnecessary with little benefit versus the risk.

Only software:(

...or music, movies, tv shows, iBooks, magazines, etc.

ahahah..

You are definitely wrong. iTunes store does not provide those **** here in China. At least no music, movies, or books are provided.

I think it's well known that china has strict policies about importing media products, and apple is obviously not one of the authorized distributor here.

So, it will be difficult for the 'poor' girl to spend the 10,000 dollars. If she is smart enough to register an US iTunes account without US credit card, she may use it to download the music and movies from iTunes store(sorry the **** come without subtitles). Otherwise, she has to give out Angry birds to any one she know who has an iPhone and still struggling to figure out what to do with the rest of the prize.

"Fu Chunli was not a big fan of Apple."

She should have been disqualified for that line right there.

I was thinking the exact opposite. A fan of Apple is already a fan of Apple. If she wasn't already a fan of Apple, she will be now. And probably also her friends and family. The Butterfly Effect.

1) get a friend to write a pointless freemium app with crazy expensive IAP
2) download app
3) buy $10,000 worth of IAP
4) ???
5) profit

Seems dam convenient that Apple wants to push into China and the winner is in China.

I smell a rat.

Chun Li with a spinning bird kick for the win.

It would have been a little more polite for her to pretend to be an apple fan at least. She could have at least blown a little smoke and graciously accepted her prize. "I have always wanted to have apple products my whole life, but I finally just got an opportunity to get my first iPhone about a month ago. I am so excited to see what the app store has to offer." Saying stupid crap like she did is a pretty good way for apple to stop doing this promotion the next time a milestone rolls around.

Why should she pretend to be an apple fan??
I'd say gimme the check and then get off my ass!
I owe apple nothing!

Most of the people asking what's the point of $10,000 in the iTunes store probably know how to get most or all of their music, movies, and apps free anyway. I'm guessing it could be sold for $5000 at least, but I'd sell it for just $1000 if that was the most I could get for it. That's a brand new MacBook Air or 64GB 4G iPad.

You missed my point. My point was that it isn't worthless. This person will never need to purchase any software for their Mac or iPhone/iPad (ex. Final Cut Pro, Aperture, OS X Upgrades, iWork etc...).

Software is basically free in China anyway. You can just go down to the shops and get a cheap 20-DVD set with pretty much every piece of software you could possibly need.

And I doubt she runs OS X. Pretty much everyone in China, including those who use Apple hardware, still use Windows. Many essential local applications are Windows-only still, and the localisation support on other apps is often streets ahead on Windows. OS X is slowly making inroads, but it seems that it is mainly the domain of geeks (running Parallels whenever they need to) for now.

I mean, some essential websites for large companies (e.g. banks) and government agencies are still IE6-only as well. There won't be a big population switching away from XP any time soon, let alone to OS X.

Her US$10,000 is basically going to be useful for iPhone or iPad apps. That's all that is available for iTunes in China.
