"Fu Chunli was not a big fan of Apple."

She should have been disqualified for that line right there.

She wasn't a big fan because she was new to Apple. We all started somewhere. I hope she enjoys her iPhone and prize. :)

I would love to have that much in my iTunes account. :D
I could spend it easy. I have many apple devices.
It may be hard to spend on one iphone though.

She could have a go at playing "Brewster's Millions" but on iTunes.

And with less money.

$10,000 iTunes gift card. That is big of Apple.

It equates to absolutely NO cost to themselves. Why not make it $100,000 gift card.

If they gave me that I would tell them where to stick it.

What's wrong with cash. Cash is actually worth something.

With cash she could have bought nice things for her family. "Do you want another song by Johnny Cash, grandmother?" "No dear, I could really do with a new orthopaedic bed for my back though", "Sorry I can only download music".

Once she's downloaded half a dozen albums and 50 apps which turn out to be rubbish and get deleted what is she going to do with the rest?

Remind me not to bother trying for the 50 billionth app download.

They have $100 billion in the bank. This is a real insult to her and to us Apple users.

Chun Li with a spinning bird kick for the win.

It would have been a little more polite for her to pretend to be an apple fan at least. She could have at least blown a little smoke and graciously accepted her prize. "I have always wanted to have apple products my whole life, but I finally just got an opportunity to get my first iPhone about a month ago. I am so excited to see what the app store has to offer." Saying stupid crap like she did is a pretty good way for apple to stop doing this promotion the next time a milestone rolls around.

Rubbish! The idea is that she'll more likely be a fan from now on. I think it's good publicity for people to see Apple randomly awarding the typical casual user.

1. Become Mac developer

2. Author Flashlight app that costs $9,999

3. Purchase your own app

4. Profit

If she's not a big Apple fan she may wish she hadn't won before long... what are the income tax laws in China? In the US you'd have to pay thousands of dollars due to your "winnings"

Well, lets say that you weren't in the upper 1% of earners in the USA and paid an income tax of 25%. 25% of $10000 is $2500. that would still net you a prize of $7500. If you don't work and have no income, you would pay even less than %25 perhaps even 0.

So what's the beef, you still won!

70/30 revenue split... and how do you make a profit by spending your 10K on your own app?

She wouldn't be spending her $10k -- she doesn't have $10k. She has a card with no cash value. It's a $7,000 cash profit and I would guess anyone would rather have $7k in cash then a $10k iTunes card.

And your statistic is meaningless, who cares if China has 40 billion people its actual iphone user accounts, which the USA trumps all nations.

Actually you might want to be looking at iPhone usage growth, because new users download a bunch more apps than users who have already downloaded them. And I suspect the USA is not the world leader in new iPhone activations.

However, she won store credit. No tax on that. The card has no cash value. Its not supposed to anyway.

If Apple found out that she sold it (if she were to), I think she would be in a heap of trouble.

Once you purchase and activate a iTunes gift card, it has no cash value, cannot be refunded or traded for cash. People who sell them are actually kind of breaking laws, but not really. Hard to explain I guess.

wow - impressive how many people bi**ng ... You get something for free - doesn't matter if its a cash value, how much it Apple costs and the sorts. She downloaded a free game and won $10k in credit - that is massive.... People who complain that she didn't get cash instead are simply jealous that they didn't win :D :D

If Apple found out that she sold it (if she were to), I think she would be in a heap of trouble.

Depends on the T&Cs of the competition ... and whether part of them showing her how the app store works, was redeeming the code right there in the shop into her account :D

Right. How awful to have offended a corporation by being honest! Apple has feelings, right? We're not just statistics to them, we're FAMILY! Oh, wait, no, we're numbers as far as they're concerned.

Why on earth should she lie in order to "be polite" or "be gracious"? Would you even be saying this if she weren't a woman?

"I have always wanted to have apple products my whole life, but I finally just got an opportunity to get my first iPhone about a month ago. I am so excited to see what the app store has to offer."

Great. So you're a bad writer AND a terrible speech-maker

The problem with that scenario is you win 10,000 dollars of iTunes credit, but if you were to need to pay taxes on them you would pay taxes in real money. A person wouldn't normally spend $2500 on iTunes so that'd be a huge chunk coming out of your pocket.

Ouch it hurts me so bad when people try to hurt my feelings on the internet.

No I don't believe that apple has feelings, at least not since the heart and soul of the company died last year. :( My comment was in regards to the fact that the millions of people who lost this contest wouldn't be quite as pissed off if a true fan won. If some company just gave me $10,000 of store credit it would be pretty hard for me not to instantly start singing their praises out of excitement.

Why do ignorant people automatically assume that if a woman is involved in anything that sexism must be part of the issue?

How funny would it have been if the 25 billionth app was a "soft porn" app? Im sure the winner would have bee a little more hesitant to come forward if such a situation arose :D

For all we know, the 25 billionth app could have been downloaded by a completely different customer in a different country and been a fart app.

It wouldn't be the first time a major corporation has pre-vetted the winning contestant and chosen the one that was best suited for their particular marketing message. Could be she was specifically chosen because a) Apple is making huge inroads in China, b) Apple NEEDS to keep Chinese officials on their side due to all the manufacturing/legal they have tied up in China and c) she specifically does NOT sound like the typical gushing "Apple Fangrl."

Not saying they did, but again....I'm not that gullible to think they didn't or wouldn't rig this to ensure positive PR spin accordingly. Its Apple...if anyone knows how to market something, its them.

This might be a quirk of translation. "Not a big fan" for us implies she actively doesn't like Apple, but the original sentiment may be more like "she doesn't really follow Apple" or something like that, like Apple just isn't on her radar.

The quote translates to "not an Apple enthusiast/fanatic".

So, yep. Pretty much. She was saying the iPhone was the only Apple product she has bought, and she only got it a month ago.

Hmm. . Can 10,000 worth of info even fit on one apple device? If she had a couple of devices, this would make more sense.

Good for her.
Me? I'd sell it on ebay and pay down my student loans.

Why sell it on ebay, you'll lose 9% and then some from ebay and then more from paypal.. Just go to one of those buy my giftcard sites bc they usually offer 80-90% of the actual value vs. a bidding war that someone is going to be low balling it.

If I had won (which I'm never going to) and I had it in hand, I would've told them I'm gonna sell it bc I don't like Apple and therefor this prize has no value to me. But that's just me.

Based on the comments in this thread and the nasty comments re: woman suing Apple, I'm disappointed in the level of immaturity shown. Don't think I'll be donating to MacRumors again. Some of you should be ashamed at how you talk to others. :(
At least no one wrote "I'd hit it" (although a few commented positively on her appearance).
