The name did surprise me, but I'm still "reeling" from calling a $10K to $17,000 smartwatch Apple Watch Edition. Basically, let's include the name of the type of product to denote it's the most expensive of the 3 types... (by a cost factor of 10 from then 2nd tier no less!)

I don't see people going for this. People upgrading to a new iphone is not going to settle for the one with lesser specs and missing features. Plus, the 4.7 inch screen size is is probably the standard now that anything smaller just wouldn't cut it for most.

People who want to stay with 4", and who have been hanging on to iPhone 5/5c/5s models waiting for Apple's next move, will be all over it. It'll be the best 4" iPhone yet, presumably at the same price as the current 5s. What's not to love?

And what about someone who comes from 4S? ;)

I have to say. That 4 inch phone on that photo if has A9, 7000 aluminum alloy and 32 GB of flash(or more) I'm sold.

I wish Apple would just take a small (4"), medium (4.7"), large (5.5") approach. Every model is basically the same. Small and medium could be the same price to avoid having the small steal sales from the medium - people who want a smaller iPhone are probably willing to pay the "regular" price for it.

Exactly! I'd even pay MORE for the 4"! What I don't want is a 4" with one-two year old technology and fewer features, just so Apple can justify it being a "cheap" or "entry" iPhone. I want everything from an iPhone 7 in a 4" form factor!! How hard is that?

I paid more for the privilege of owning the "Black" MacBook in 2006, and it was a big hit for them. The lesson there is, never underestimate what someone is willing to pay to get what they want. Apple knows there is a huge market of 4" holdout customers (at least 40% of installed iPhone users still have a 5S or older). And they also know they have them over the barrel. Even if they only offer this entry level "5se" now, you can bet there will be a "7 mini" on it's way. I'd upgrade from my 5S to a 5se in March, and then upgrade again to a "7 mini" in September. Apple gets the most money they can out of me that way. And they could charge a more than even the 7 for the new "7 mini", even if they aren't able to squeeze all the same feature into it, merely for the privilege of going smaller. If Apple markets it right, they can make having a smaller screen seem even more exclusive than having the 7.

Who knows if 5se is present at March event? There is even no confirmation if there is a march event :p

It would make sense based on previous behaviour (no guarantee of course). I also agree with 9.3 launching at March event whatever else is being launched ("5se" or iPad Air 3 or whatever) as it has big enough features to warrant a 5 minute segment.

Im confused on this whole 'iPhone 5se' in March type of 'Rumor'. What does Apple have to gain by releasing it mid-cycle? Absolutely nothing. People that are going to front $549 for a device, will just spend $100-200 more for a 6/6s. And then you have those that are locked into carrier payment plans, 2 year contracts and Apple iPhone Upgrade program, and they won't be or wouldn't even get the '5se' either. It really doesn't make any sense.

But back to topic at hand - I think we will see Beta 3 today or tomorrow.

Here's how. It might be midseason for Apple customers, but end season for most Android manufacturers. And the lack of competition in the 4in segment might be a good reason to time it as such.
Say all you want about Tim Cook, he sure as hell knows how to make money ;)

Naming it iPhone 5se is horrid if true.

People who want a smaller iPhone won't spend more for a 6s. I know two people who hate the bigger screens.

I'm pretty certain they'll brand it saying 'Special Edition' in a super elegant font, and not call it SE. That works I guess?

It's not mid-cycle, there hasn't been a 4 inch iPhone in 2 years now. It's mid-cycle for the phone these people already didn't want to buy.

But a recent graphic showed something like 25% of users still on a 4 inch device; at least 2 years old now. That is a lot of sales to get.
