Yes, Apple will win, because they'll give themselves a competitive advantage. Just like how Siri only worked with Apple Music for the first few years, but not with Spotify. (and 1,000 other examples which I will spare you listing).

I hope you realize every. single. company is doing this?

The "dots" should be cheap, distributed around the house and assigned a location (kitchen, bedroom, office, etc), stay fixed and instead used for tracking your iPhone (or rather, have the iPhone "ping" them) in order to determine your iPhone's location within the house.

That would revolutionize HomeKit, as now you could say commands without *always* specifying a location.
You could just say "turn on the lights" and your iPhone would use the dots in order to determine your exact location within the house and magically turn on the lights in the room where you are

CoreLocation already supports using beacons and wifi for more accurate indoor positioning.

How are you the first person to reply to almost every post?

Probably a bot. Look at the post times, it's often 1 minute after a story is published. I doubt anyone has time to read the story, type out a reply that isn't complete garbage, and send it in under a minute.

Honestly, how many people loose their 💩 on a routine basis? Or they can’t keep track of their 💩? I just don’t get this item, unless you’re welding this to your 5 year old. I know most people are the walking unconscious, but I so don’t understand the utility of such a product.

Still, these are marketed for art installations, museums, stores, etc.
I would like something very cheap, for our homes and integrated into HomeKit

I think you're too hard on Apple. I just don't think we're going to see the game changers that we saw in the past. What we have now are more under-the-hood improvements like more and better cameras and unbelievable screens. Sensors like gyroscope and compass, pressure sensor and the like. I had the first iPhone too. It was my first cell. Also, the Apple Watch was a big deal. Those don't come very often.

(I miss my ZX-81)
Fair enough. Missing the ZX-81 as well, of course... I appreciate that a game-changer like the first iPhone is a rare beast indeed, but it is annoying how friends in the dreaded Samsung crowd keep showing off phones with better specs than mine, bought at roughly the same time. Recently, in a conference room, a colleague plugged his Samsung into a large display direct via USB C (I think), and it was recognised instantly and optimised to work with that display. It looked great. My iPhone would need a dongle and even then would probably not work seamlessly in the way his did. Why? Why are Apple not leading on this sort of thing? It really irritates me to be honest. Yes I know Apple is better for a variety of other reasons, but could they not at least trump the likes of Samsung on specs with each release, and be ahead of the game on connectivity etc?

What is nice about the Apple tile is the majority of Cell phone users are iPhones so everyone that gets the IOS update instantly becomes your bloodhound and can track down your item. With tile the software has to be install on the phone by the person, so the persons phone that might help find it so it has to have tile software running on it. So the percentages goes up you will be about to locate it and report it to the police that your bike is now at this location and it was stolen. Going to get some for wallet, bike, snowblower, lawn mower, car fob and the like. :)

I‘d like to see a rechargeable battery with a small puck charger similar to Apple Watch.
Interesting, perhaps that is why AirTags have the odd shape, in order to share the charger?

I know a few men that keep a Tile in their wallets and the AirTag shape just makes that look painful.

I sent a suggestion to Apple 2-3 years ago where I suggested they do this, but in reverse.

How is this different than iBeacon? Maybe the implementation you're suggesting isn't currently possible (not sure) but the technology for small dots with a static location already exists.

What you describe sounds pretty cool. When talking to our magic devices, it seems silly we also have to tell it what room we're in.

That is the budget model. I am going to get the AirTag Pro Max, which allows you to use a tag with more than 1 device at a time.
I'm waiting for the AirTag Pro Max Plus Quantum S Device (7.84"), demonstrating that your lost device is in fact in every possible location at the same time. Should make it much easier to find.

How many bicycles, motorcycles, jet ski's, trailers, snowmobiles, boats get stolen every year? People steal stuff :)

You are focusing on what's technically possible. If I wanted this now, I could use beacons, but I would need to implement an app and create Siri shortcuts, and THEN I could start using it.

I'm talking about a complete and integrated solution. Having Apple implement this as a one-step solution. Buy dots and go!

Can't the thieves pop them off?

Well if you are smart you would find a good way to hide them. By the time they find it, you have already reported it to the police. It most likely will track where it has been so even if they find it and take it off security camera can find them along the path. Having insurance is good but finding your original stuff gives you a better chance with a tagged item. :)

And/Or just point (your phone or your Apple Watch) at the light. Or your Apple Watches. Or ..

AirTags ultra-wideband +AR & Lidar and many things are possible.

It's been done already and, by the looks of the design (if that is the final design, of course), has been done better with Tile.

The hard part is making this work, reliably, at huge volume, and with security and privacy. At the time they announced these they talked a bit about what they did to keep the data secure and private and it is non-trivial.

How are bots like this still allowed to post on the forums?

I am thinking these are going to be wafer thin, think how small a button battery is and all you need to do is surround that battery with tech parts. Or how small the apple AirPods batteries. Apple is great at making things tiny and powerful. It does not have to do much until it is lost and then the tracking can begin.

Instead of a replaceable battery, I'd really rather have a rechargeable one, Apple-style. Plop it on a charging pad every several months for a couple hours and be good to go. No-waste and easy-peasy. There are other actual GPS-trackers out there that are rechargeable and hold charges for weeks, so it definitely is feasible.

A user replaceable, rechargeable battery would be great!

I love the concept of Airtags, but it will be a tough sell against the Tile Slim if the actual device is as thick as the concept designs. I hope they have something small and slim to fit in my bag or wallet.
