Do I presume these will be cross platform so Android phone users will also be able to buy Apple's tags to secure their items from getting lost?
No reason to make them Apple only is there?

You have Tile.

There is also likely going to be a feature in iPhones to always ”See AirTags currently in range“ to prevent people being stalked or tracked without permission

ok, if these need to be charged on a regular basis, this will be a very dumb product. if you stick this on your bag(for example), then lose it and realize your batter died last week... this product would be more of a piss off than a helpful tool.

Never heard of an app called Reminder?

I don’t believe this is a product Apple will release yet if they do I think an excited initial spike of salesfor 3mths then drop into being more forgotten or ignored than the HomePod, imho.

What you're really saying is: "I don't see any use for this, so no one else has any use for it".

Open your mind, accept that other people may have other needs and solutions than you. Just move on. It's that easy.

Honestly, how many people loose their 💩 on a routine basis? Or they can’t keep track of their 💩? I just don’t get this item, unless you’re welding this to your 5 year old. I know most people are the walking unconscious, but I so don’t understand the utility of such a product.

Maybe you're like me who would like to hide it inside the Vespa scooter just in case it gets stolen. Or you wanna protect your bike. Your car. Your boat. Your robot mower. Your guitar. Your work laptop. Your briefcase. Your suitcase. Your drone. Heck you can tag your cat or put it in your kids jacket.

never heard of convenience?

Until there’s such a thing as a free and permanent energy, keeps dreaming. People doing things on a regular basis everyday. Paying bills, cleaning, fertilizes plants etc. We’ll survive.

similar tags come with a long-lasting battery. i hope apple's tags do too, but i also hope that they will have an option that needs daily charging so you can utilize your reminders app.

Surely to be a really interesting product, these should utilise Bluetooth SIG Mesh so that they can potentially be tracked long-distance too.

As in, say I lose my keys and have one of these attached, potentially with SIG Mesh it could always be sending pings, so as soon as someone else with a network connected Apple device walks near it, the ping would go via their device (encrypted and anonymously) using that device’s internet connection to “phone home” and then show up on my “Find My” to say where it is.

That would be super neat!

How are you the first person to reply to almost every post?
Probably a bot. Look at the post times, it's often 1 minute after a story is published. I doubt anyone has time to read the story, type out a reply that isn't complete garbage, and send it in under a minute.
If they are not a bot, then it’s somone who just comments for the ‘likes’ and to increase their post count to increase their status (I.e., macrumors newbie v macrumors demi-goddess). Most of their posts are nonsense. All we can do is report the account.

I don't think that is accurate. Apple made a change in iOS 13 which defaulted location tracking to "always off" for third party apps while it was flagged "always on" for the FindMy app. Apple didn't remove anything, you can still turn location tracking on for third party apps it is now just defaulted to off for privacy.

Yes, one can argue that its a little jab at companies like Tile, but it did not break their app or product. One could also argue that it was another privacy initiative undertaken by Apple and Tile was caught in the crossfire. I am quite happy with location services being "always off" by default for third party apps forcing me to make the decision.

If I'm wrong please let me know.
You can NOT set an iOS app to always allow location services. There is a setting that suggests that, but you continually get pop ups asking if you want to allow access to continue. They pop up at random and it is easy to accidentally hit no. There is no warning that what you just hit may break functionality of the app. A lot of users are not going to know where to go to reenable this, but then their app breaks.

Sometimes it helps to think of things in a different way. What if picking Never allow location to an app wasn’t permanent, but rather you were continually reprompted to continue not allowing location access to an app. How ridiculous would that be? Inevitably people would accidentally hit allow, and everyone would be upset about the privacy implications of the setting not staying where the user set it.

For the record, I had 3 Tile tags. They are now sitting in a drawer and I no longer use them. I got too annoyed with the pop ups from iOS to the point that I deleted the app. Apple absolutely knew what they were doing when they made this decision.

I am curious about battery life and cost. After that, I might get intrigued.
Yeah this is what I’m really curious about. These things will need battery. Don’t tell me it will be considered “disposable”. It would be ironic if Apple wanted consumers to keep rebuying these while talking about the environment.

I can see the use of these products. It’s a first world problem thing, where sometimes you misplace your car keys, or wallet, etc. It’s not life or death, but it is convenient.

Exactly. Imagine you are government looking to subdue citizens into accepting less freedom. Or lets say you want to know if your employees are actually working 18/7 on their business trip or if they are wasting time while eating or traveling. This product is great.

They will probably be lithium ion, but man if they are serious about e-waste they will allow the user replaceable cr2032 batteries.

edit. Never mind. As long as they're "battery serviceable" then let Apple replace for $30 in two years.

Rechargeable or replaceable batteries would be great, but I hope not CR2032's, they're pretty thick for a device like this. An inductive charging battery would be great, assuming the battery can last the expected product life.

If this thing could ping off of Apple's iBeacons... they could be the ultimate luggage tag. Not many experiences worse than losing a piece of luggage at the start of a trip.
