I spoke with an Apple Store employee yesterday while buying a family member a new computer. I asked about the Back-to-School promotion and the employee told me they canceled it this year due to return issues.

Basically too many people were buying an Apple product to get the iTunes gift card, returning the product and expecting to keep the gift card. it's a shame they cancelled it because I would have enjoyed $100 on iTunes, however we still did receive the educational discount on the MBP and Apple Care

I too have been waiting for this promotion. Fireball Dragon how do you get the free 3 years of Applecare?

Apple UK offers free 3 years of AppleCare. Apple US used to too but discontinued it within the couple of years, though discounted edu 3 year AppleCare is still available (but still around $130 from what I remember).

Just thinking about the days we could get a free ipod touch and a printer at heavy discount prices... good old days.
Yep. I bought a 24" iMac in September 2009 and received a free iPod touch and free printer!

(Still have the printer here on my desk, the iPod is long gone).

Looks like Apple has quietly discontinued the back to school promotion. Apple probably realized that the promotion wasn't necessary anymore like it was years ago when Apple products were not ubiquitous at schools.

Why give students a discount anymore? Most "students" already have an iPhone and most like iPad and so getting their parents to run out and buy a $1500+ netbook (I mean Macbook Air), is not out of the question.

Why offer a discount when you have a consumer base willing to pay twice as much for half the thickness?

Hope this isn't true :/ they can modify their system to prevent a return if the gift card isn't present/used upon a return.

The student pricing is still in effect and is given to students buying Apple products... Went into the store less than a month ago and got $100 off a MacBook just for telling the salesman my beother was going to be using his MacBook for college.

So many opinions based on zero evidence. The only thing we know for sure is the the Back To School promotion hasn't been announced yet. Nothing else.

How many damn discounts do students need ?
Are you kidding me? Students are maxed out on loans and budgets and life is complicated concerning money. They can barely afford to eat pizza, much less buy Apple at full prices. (Even with the Ed discount) It would be very short-sighted of Apple to stop this promotion because when college students can get apple laptops, it is a big hook for Apple to keep them as customers when they graduate/get good paying jobs and can afford more Apple products, having already been living in the Apple ecosystem. It is an investment into the future consumers for Apple, and up to now it's been working very well. Go to a college campus and see the number of Apple laptops students use for their schoolwork. Apple has always been closely tied with education, whether it is K-12 public Ed or College and post graduate schools. I enjoy the discount because I am an educator and we aren't in our profession for the paycheck either. This would be a big misstep for Apple if they let this opportunity lapse, and though they are clearly in front of their competitors concerning the iPhone/iPad, but with laptops/desktops they are still significantly behind the powers of Microsoft in terms of market share. Yes I know the Mac has been gaining ground on MS, but they aren't there yet. If this is true that they are not having the special this year, my real question to Apple would be "Why are you trying to fix something that is already working for you?" It can't be the money and profits.....we all know Apple is not hurting in that department. And even if profits are driving this discussion, as an investment, they know this pays handsomely in the long run. Just my 3 cents.....

If being a student is all that great and puts people into better financial situations, why don't you just enroll in your local university and get yourself that status that you seem to be so jealous about?

But don't play tricks, attend classes and kiss your job goodbye.
You know, that thing that gives you money instead of draining you from money like tuitions for college.

Back in the height of the worst recession in over a century; when retailers were throwing out insane deals just to lure customers back in?

Who buys books? Everything is online for free...

Hmm, I see you have background in scientific research and citations.

Yes, who hasn't heard of all these great papers that feature only web sources in their citations.
Also, why buy books for courses when you can tell your professor to suck it and force him into giving you online sources only.
Oh wait, that's the man grading your papers.

Some of us (and I'm a shareholder since 2005) having been waiting for this promotion for months! Apple if you are not going to have it can you please let us know so we can buy other computers? Seriously you are really disappointing. In more ways than this . I don't think Steve would like this one bit.
Wow, am I still in before people discrediting your statement, because you DARED to mention that Steve wouldn't have approved on this?

Rrright. Because the 'back to school promotion' wasn't a cost-saving promo for students (and us teachers) - the gift card was a guarantee of further future sales. They could fix this by giving a promotion that makes the computers themselves easier to buy, or more attractive. I'd be happy with an extra $50 off. Instead I'll try to get another year of service out of this 2008 machine.
