It's interesting seeing people still clinging to the $3,000 price a tech pundit suggested long ago. Based on absolutely nothing.

I guess it's so that some will have a reason to believe it will be a flop.

It’s not based on nothing. This very article says four people familiar with the matter. And even if the information is old, we still have no new information. And with the amount of tech in this thing $3000 doesn’t sound absurd. Microsoft does actually still make the Hololens you know, they just sell it to military and corporate who don’t bat an eye at $3k+ for something like this.

Oh...."four people familiar with the matter." That made me laugh!

People still need to cling to that price to justify their need to call it a flop.

Vaporware product, but I still don't get what it is solving or make easier. I've used some AR apps from Ikea, and I think some sort of puzzle box game a few years ago on the phone, and while there's some advantage to the Ikea app to preview furniture in the house, I wouldn't think goggles were benefiting me.

Given the continued poor uptake of 3rd party apps on the Apple Watch, I'd assume(?) whatever drives sale of this would hinge on some much appreciated application created by Apple in future years after release... I'm just not understanding what I'd use the goggles for, for an hour at a time.

"The dedicated ISP translates the distorted images captured by the external cameras into a faithful video representation of the user's surroundings with low latency."

So... no see-through display??? What a damn shame!

Wow. I mean I'm impressed, but that's a HUGE amount of technology packed into a head-worn product. Great to see something that appears to be *really* new and a significant step forward from other headsets. Use cases, other than gaming, though? And the price?.... I still wonder. But let's be hopeful and see what pops off the conveyor line. As others have said, if any company can get the engineering right, it's Apple. I really hope they do.

I’m glad to see this one trudging it’s way through the minefield and making its way to market. It’s a good sign that they consider the overlay opacity such a primary feature to set it to a knob. It’ll be useful wandering around looking at maps and whatnot.
My bigger concern isn’t the hardware. Since it’s Apple we’re talking about here, I expect this to only view content in a minimum # of Apples own chosen file formats, and not support for any of the existing 3d formats the world has standardized for decades. Always with the reason that it’s for performance reasons, of course. It sure would give them absolute control over content, which they like having, but it’d restrict content to a pretty paltry variety. And it would also ensure the user isn’t looking at anything saucy, which Apple likes. Cause Momma’s gonna check out all your girlfriends for you/Momma won’t let anyone dirty get through/Momma will always find out where you’ve been/Mother’s gonna keep baby healthy and clean… etc.

If it can only play iOS games and run a 3d maps app, & not viz AEC models or any of the worlds other 3d content, I’m going to bleed out my eyeballs.

I agree but... not the first generation, like for basically all other Apple devices. The minor upgrade of the second generation usually is the first great device.
Personally, I'll wait for the cheap "SE" model in 5/6 years :)

I agree, the second generation is usually always the biggest leap in both quality and features... iPod.... MacBook Air... iPad... iPhone... all products that come to mind where the first generation wasn't quite 100% there. But I'm sure the first generation VR headset will still be miles ahead of the competition!

AR is useful VR is not. i gave away my Oculus Rift S. Useless minus Google Earth VR, that was cool. AR glasses would be the bomb. No looking at phone for directions while driving, for example. Maps integration could change everything, Google maps that is, not Apples crap map.

The focus will be AR.

People into adult entertainment and people who thought the Touch Bar was going to rule the world.
Ha. Honestly I don’t get what problem this is solving or what convenience it’s providing. Since the passing of Steve Jobs no one at Apple has ever been able to answer the ‘why’ question. They can tell us what and how but rarely why. iPad Pro is a good example of that.

Someone who gets it!

I really think many people do not understand the difference between AR and VR.

AR helps people solve problems, perform tasks, do research, access information, etc.

VR is primarily for entertainment.

Of course there is some overlap. But that's mice nuts.

$3000 is gonna be a hard sell. I can imagine Apple going into VR streaming of sports and concerts as a mainstream feature but i'm not sure if people would be willing to pay so much.

People believing Apple's device will be for VR will be very disappointed.

Problems you failed to identify in the other thread after many posts.

I posted a list of 12 different AR uses off the top of my head - relating to helping people "solve problems, perform tasks, do research, access information, etc."

Perhaps you missed it or didn't understand it.

They will sell a family 4-pack like Airtags with $10 discount.
Yes I do think Apple’s idea of “family” is one that is insanely rich.

Remember the child mode of Apple Watch when it was released? Awesome! Oh, but you’ll have to get the SE which costs $279.
