You will look back at this comment in 10 years and laugh at yourself. If you told people about bluetooth headsets 15 years ago they would have said it's just a novelty, can you imagine walking around looking like you're talking to yourself?

Reminds me of the scene in Back To The Future 2 where M J Fox is in that futuristic cafe and he's playing that gun game, and the ki walks up to him and says "You have to use your hands? That's like a babies toy!". Makes me think of the Microsoft Kinect and how rapidly technology is evolving.

I don't understand (well I understand because its what Apple does) why it won't work on the iPhone 4 - considering Android devices have had similar voice recognition working for a while now (with lesser specs than the iPhone 4).

that's the point: Siri ran well on the iPhone 3GS And Nuance DragonDictation ran on the iPhone 2G/3G/3GS as well. Also, similar functions exist older Android platforms (inferior to Apple's A4), so unless Apple added alot of features there (just guessing) shouldn't be a technical reason that that it can't run on an A4.

How many people do you actually see with bluetooth headsets? Especially talking into them? Maybe 1% of total phone users. Seriously?

Umm... a lot actually. Maybe it's different in germany, but it's pretty common here. i worked at a retail store up until last year and the most annoying thing was trying to ring a customer up at the register while they talked into their bluetooth headsets.

Why would this require an A5 and 1GB of memory? Nuance's speech services are almost completely driven through their servers. Yes there will be some code that has to run locally, but the heavy lifting is all done remotely. Demo Dragon Go or Siri to see how Nuance's technology works.

If Apple or anyone else can provide a legitimate reason for requiring this be limited to A5, I'll probably accepted it (being too much of a fanboy) but Apple will get a ton of bad press over it. Unless the really explain the limitations, there is going to be a lot of people howling that the limitation is artificial and meant only to force upgrades. Same as what happened when iOS 4 turned iPhone 3G's into steaming piles of sludge immediately after upgrading.

I guess I might have the excuse I needed to upgrade. Should probably start looking into how much unlocked iP4's are selling for soon.

Because Apple needs to invent reasons for people to upgrade. Thats my guess at least...

Controlling the iPod/iPhone

I only recently started using the voice command option for the iPod app. I tend to find that I am arguing with it more than getting what I want... Me: "Play Song X" iOS: "I'm sorry, you must have FaceTime enabled to make calls" Me: "No! Play Song X" iOS: "I'm sorry the genius isn't available" ugh!

I actually use "Play songs by <artists name>" and it works beautifully. I don't think you can say "Play song <song name>" It's not in the logic. However, I think the best list of commands can be found here:

http://atmac.org/iphone-voice-commands

Which actually doesn't include my "play songs by <artists name>" oddly enough....but it works all the time for me.

Of course there isnt a technical reason behind this (rumoured limitation). Like Meya once sang: Its all about the money...

I think there is little to understand at this point, since we don't know exactly how the feature works. We don't even know if what's in Android is comparable in terms of hardware requirements.

How do we know they aren't moving some (or most, or all) of the processing to the phone itself? Unlimited data plans are almost a thing of the past, after all. I can definitely see Apple trying to require as little data as possible to hit your cellular connection.

I remain sceptical after using voice control, which is just a steaming
Pile of dog poo... They're gonna have to do something pretty special to overcome my current level of scepticism! ;)

Just like typical dorks to brush off such a seemingly interesting, useful, and powerful new feature in favor of SHINEY!!!

If it works as well as other Apple features this could make a major impact in the mobile/handheld market. Hell, it could be a great first step in major changes in computing in general.

it'll be a disappointment if it doesn't work on the iPad 2, it was just released this year and I'm sure there will be a lot of sales this holiday season...
It'll be too bad if you get an brand new iPad 2 with iOS5 on it, only to find you can't run a newly promoted feature. So my guess is that it will run on at least the existing A5-512 chip.

.

I think the iPad 2 does have a chance to run this new feature. The difference between the iPad 2 and the iPhone, is that the iPad 2 does not have to run a telephone service in the background to accept and make calls. It will be interesting to see what amount of RAM will be in the new iPod Touch. Either way fingers crossed.

The original SIRI app worked just fine on a 3GS...

technical reason: It is not compatible with upgrade revenue.

After reading some of the comments, I think I am the only iPhone user in the world who loves the voice recognition capabilities of the phone. I use it all the time and I would say is 98% accurate for me.

This rumor has iPhone4S slapped all over it in my opinion. This exactly what Apple did with the 3GS... slight spec bump and...oh! the new 3GS has voice recognition, video recording, etc. etc., things the 3G DOESN'T HAVE! It sounds like they are going to do something similar here...

Was I suckered into upgrading from my 3G to 3GS because of that? Well...yes I was...

But will I be suckered in AGAIN to buy a 4S? Umm, absolutely.
