The $100 gift card is useless. Music, videos, and software can all be obtained for free

Oh, Thenubsauce, the toll road of pirated media is a long and dangerous one. The price? Malware.

Tomorrow will be interesting...

Apple announced B2S

AND

HP unveils the refresh of their high-end Envy 14

One way or another, a decision will be made...

I wouldn't mind an Apple Gift Card, but not a huge fan of the iTunes gift card.

Throw in the fact that Microsoft is offering a new Xbox, this isn't the best idea by Apple.

Education Price: $1099
Apple Price: $1199
Students save $100 or roughly 8%... (I still dont see 15%)

£999 on Normal Apple Store, £860 on the University of Manchester Apple Store Page = 14%

Wow. Just because you won't get a free iPod your not going to buy a Mac? That's the reason? So you want to stick to Windows where you get viruses all the time and with cheap plastic computers? Mac's are the most high end (user friendly) machines on the market for this time period. Please think before you type.

Shh, spewing hatred (false, while at it) against Microsoft might be your way of dealing with your disappointment in this years B2S promo from Apple, but keep a clean slate, mate.

For those concerned with purchasing Lion in addition to your new Mac, there is an up to date program (http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/) in which Macs purchased a month or so before the release of Lion will receive Lion for free. Check the website when Lion is released for additional information.

Also MacMall is generally not cheaper than the educational discount because the educational discount applies for the base price of the system and anything you customize.

As for the Back to School promotion, I would love a free iPod Classic. I have a second generation 32 GB iPod that still works (somehow) and an iPhone 4, but I cannot fit all of my music on my iPod and I hate using the iPod on the iPhone. I prefer physical CDs for music and software so I wouldn't use the $100 gift card, but my mom could. =]

Additional discounts would be awesome if they managed to throw that into the promotion. I'm planning on purchasing the top of the line MacBook Pro and it's going to set me back.... quite a bit.... so anything helps.

Who doesn't have an iPod at this point? Heck, I've got three, including my phone. Everybody seems to want one so they can sell it on eBay, since they already have one! Well, now you have some free stuff to load on what you already got, and that's pretty nice. Point is, it's free money in your pocket if you need a new computer, but they certainly don't have to do that.

People who base their computer-buying decision on whether or not they get a free iPod have their priorities way out of whack.

Yeah, yeah, I get that it's perhaps less value than an iPod, but how much are you really going to get when eBay is flooded with iPods?

i actually still have my 160GB iPod Classic. i can't switch to the Touch until it gets up to that storage capacity and not cost an arm. but at this point.. i'd rather have Apple's B2S promo be the new Time Capsule

I am getting tired of people calling others cheap and cry babies. Apple doesn't have to offer anything I agree. However a lot of people waited on purchasing a mac to get this iPod Touch. Not because they were cheap but because if your in the market for a new iMac why wouldn't you take advantage of it? So the individuals waited to make the purchase and find the deal is not as enticing to them and they are upset that they waited. Some may have passed up a good PC (not as good as an iMac I know) that was on sale and could have received a free XBOX 360. Now if they go the PC route they may pay more. It's all relative and if they feel screwed by Apple let them vent. As for me, I need an iPod so I waited. If this rumor is true then I am disappointed I didn't buy the iMac earlier. I'll take the gift card and reluctantly use my android device for music.

Thats weird. UK students get 80% more discount than US students?

That can't be right. I think there must be different levels of discount for high school and uni.

Some of you seem incredulous that anybody would let this influence their purchasing decision. You have to keep in mind that most posters here are very price inelastic and would buy a Mac regardless (like smokers buy cigarettes, forgive the metaphor). There are a lot of people, like me, whose decisions are based off of making a Mac as affordable as possible. That means taking advantage of every possible offer. If you want to call me cheap, that's fine, but the new Dell XPS 15z at $999 with 6 GB RAM, i5 processor, 1 GB dedicated graphics, and oh yeah, free Xbox 360 is looking pretty good right now.

http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-15z/pd.aspx

Not all students are wealthy enough to buy any electronics they desire. The old offer was a nice gesture that made an expensive computer realistic for students.

And to those saying "Apple is giving you $100, don't complain"--they're not "giving" me anything when I have to spend $1000+ to get it. They are not being benevolent for the sake of being benevolent.

High School gets less discount than university yes. Apple stuff looks loads cheaper in the US anyway, Yanks get the stuff at standard price for less than the university discount here.

It makes more sense to get the gift card actually.

The ipod promos always locked you into the lowest storage option for the ipod. You were not allowed to pay the difference and upgrade. And if you own an ipad or iphone already you may not be interested an ipod touch. So the free ipod is not always the ideal promo choice.

The gift card lets you buy some media for whatever device you decide to view it on.

As far as I remember, that isn't true. I bought my MBP last summer and you get to select ANY iPod touch, and then you get a rebate for the value of the lowest option.

Wow! Nice deal. Now if only Apple gave more than just $100 off student discount on a iMac would make better sense for a free $100 iTunes card. Ehh Apple knows that they will still sell their products.

Yep, I got a iPod 1st Gen, iPod Video, iPod nano, iPod Shuffle and iPod Touch 32GB but the old iPods were for 4 free with any purchase of Mac lol. The iPod Touch I got at a discount at Sams club they were having some kind sale.

100 iTunes gift card is useless as I don't listen to any kinds of music. And in Japan, apple is offering free iPod touch to Japanese students. It made feel kind of bad if Apple offered that gift card to me. Apple hopefully makes anyone equal by at least giving us free iPod touches or giving us a choice between the gift card or free iPod touches.

You sound like a troll when you say: You do not listen to any kinds of music.

Maybe you should spend your money into school instead.

We need to remember that this is still just rumored at this point and Apple could still be giving iPods as part of the promo.

And to those that think getting a PC/Xbox is a better deal... You're crazy.

Only thing good about the deal is the Xbox 360 the notebook it self is BLAH! Imagine if free $100 itunes card and a iPod with your purchase of a Mac wow a great deal but I would not hold breath on it since we are talking about :apple:

This kind of promo makes perfect sense. I wouldn't be surprised to see prices on some of these refreshes come down a bit either.

First, it makes absolutely no sense for Apple to include a massive discount on a wildly popular product like the iPad. They can't keep them in stock as it is, if they added them to the B2S promo it would be an instant disaster.

The iPod touch promo was cool, but I really don't think it helped them sell any extra Macs. It just made people wait to buy their Mac, then I'm sure sales of iPod touches dropped because of all of them being available on ebay and craigslist for way below retail.

With Apple being so software focused lately, this is a great promo. A $100 credit on your iTunes account can be used for all sorts of stuff, books, apps, music whatever. It'll work in the Mac App Store too, so now people can get the apps they want (iWork, Aperture etc.) and not have to pay for them.

If this rumor is true, it will be a nice thank you to developers as well. They're the ones who stand to gain from a promo like this. Apple might retain a commission on the app sale, but it's money they gave away. This will amount to millions of dollars being spent in the App Store and on iTunes and will encourage developers to keep bringing good stuff to market.

A free iPod touch is a cool thing, but now that everybody's already got one, or an iPhone, or an iPad etc. it's kind of played out.

Bingo - Win for MAS and Devs.

I wonder what a $100 iTunes card cost Apple. Got to be close to zero. This is worse even to a $100 Apple gift card, at least that could be used to buy a real product that you own. The iTunes card is just the right to down load some data files.

$70 - All to developers of iOS or Mac Apps

That's funny but it's not taking away the extreme anger that I'm feeling right now. How dare they, I know I sound like a spoiled kid but I don't care.
My friends spent half the amount of money that I did and they got an Xbox.
I was hoping they were going to compete and offer a discounted iPad. They're just admitting defeat. A friend of mine has already jumped ship. The reason that Macbooks have become the "college" laptop isn't because they're so much better, it's because of the extras like the printer and the iPod.

You really think that $129 difference from this rumored promo is "the reason" Macbooks have become the "college" laptop? - Do you have any facts to support this? Nice opinion, but I see several faults with it. IMHO.

well, there goes my desire to buy a new computer

Same as my last note, if the $129 difference is the deal breaker? Your "desire" wasn't really there in the first place.

If they're not offering the iPods, I might as well just wait for the fall refreshes :p

GASP! A rational thought!!!

First Americans whine about not getting free handouts, then they whine about Brits getting a better deal. Ugly, people.

$200 > $100 > $0

Sucks, but wouldn't be surprising. Either way something extra is nice. For those calling Apple greedy, seriously? They are a business, they make money, its what they do. Be happy with your extra 100$ gift card and **** cry babies.

Yes, they are a business and yes they are supposed to make a profit. But when companies and people get too greedy we end up with no one winning.
