Maybe it's a touch and a gift card to really battle the MS deal? Not that hard to believe. Doubt apple would be stupid enough to offer only the giftcard

Would be nice but the way Apple is doing now being at the top knowing that people will still buy their stuff. I also wonder the people complaining that this back to school deal is crap are also people who have iPhones and that they can not really afford it (trust me I worked at Best Buy and they tried apply for credit card and failed at it but yet they still bought an iPhone, it makes you wonder how they pay for the service).

Some of you seem incredulous that anybody would let this influence their purchasing decision. You have to keep in mind that most posters here are very price inelastic and would buy a Mac regardless (like smokers buy cigarettes, forgive the metaphor). There are a lot of people, like me, whose decisions are based off of making a Mac as affordable as possible. That means taking advantage of every possible offer. If you want to call me cheap, that's fine, but the new Dell XPS 15z at $999 with 6 GB RAM, i5 processor, 1 GB dedicated graphics, and oh yeah, free Xbox 360 is looking pretty good right now.

Not all students are wealthy enough to buy any electronics they desire. The old offer was a nice gesture that made an expensive computer realistic for students.

And to those saying "Apple is giving you $100, don't complain"--they're not "giving" me anything when I have to spend $1000+ to get it. They are not being benevolent for the sake of being benevolent.

That's funny. When I was a student, I could hardly afford to eat. I wouldn't feed my dog with what I had to dine on. For computing, I had a cheap calculator. I don't recall lashing out at big electronic corporations for not selling me their premium products at steep discounts.

Please understand, I'm not calling you cheap.

But if you want a product and can't afford it... wait till you can. Isn't it logical? No one owes you anything. If Apple is satisfied with their results without an extra promotion, that closes the topic.

For those criticizing people for calling Apple cheap, yes, that is silly and they are incorrect to do so. Apple is already offering an Educational discount/free printer/and they're throwing in a gift card apparantly.

But for those poking fun at those who are letting this affect their decision to purchase a MBP or not, than try to be a little more open minded.

Some were going to sell the iPod Touch to bring the eventual cost of the MBP to $899. There is a HUGE difference between $899 and $1,099 for some people.

+1, bang on chap.

It's just the fact that Apple in the past offered something of value around $200.
It wouldn't be smart for them to lower that value to $100.

At least offer a $200 iTunes gift card. What I think would make more sense is if they offered a $200 Apple gift card, that way you can use the $200 to buy an iPod touch, or use it to buy any other merchandise in their store. But, of course, most would ask to take $200 off their computer purchase.

My current MacBook gets me by (see signature), but this BTS promo could give me that little extra reason to get a shiny new one. $1099+ isnt terrible but any extra incentive, certainly an iPod Touch would make me pick it up immediately. I also thought about getting one this time last year but decided to hold off since my MacBook still worked fine.

I'd laugh(and be pretty pissed) if nothing happened tomorrow. All this discussion and arguing and raging for nothing.

My opinion, it sux, yeah.

But... it is Apple adding a little extra to the deal for college students. So if they do change it this year, they decided to not add as much incentive for whatever reason (they thought they could get away with it, for whatever reasons their bean counters said they can't afford to be as nice, or their bean counters said they'd make more money by losing some sales but not giving as good an incentive - basically the money they'd lose wouldn't be more than the money they'd save, some one pointed out maybe the touch isn't being upgraded this year and the promotion really was only a way for apple to get rid of the old ipods).

Some of you act like you are entitled to this extra. Newsflash: The cost of the computer is xxxx. Them giving you something on top is just them adding some incentive. It's not included in the cost. Treat it like an extra, not like something you are entitled to. Yeah, it sux if they do do this that they have gotten less generous, but it happens. I'm sure they have their reasons (and you gotta remember, they are out there for the most profit so they are going to do what they think will get them the most profit. For whatever reason, if this rumor is true, they don't think giving an ipod away this year will do that. They've probably already accounted for some people getting upset and not buying over this so you not buying really isn't hurting them).

Anyone know if I can use my college discount in stores and not only online? I'm not talking about the BTS promotion, i'm talking about the $100-200 off I can get from being a student.

Who are we kidding , apple isn't very strict when it comes to education sales this isn't that suprising. Other factors like margins on current iPod touches compared to previous generation could play a factor. Also its an excellent way to show youth the convience of purchasing content from the iTunes store!

If you think it's greedy don't buy simple as that, apple is a business not your friend don't ever forget that.

Not offering an ipod touch makes sense since Apple usually does that to clear the inventory for the new generation. But since there is no hardware coming out this time, I guess they don't want to clear the inventory.

Though I'm kind of disappointed in the fact that they're not giving us an ipod touch for the BTS promotion, I'm actually quite glad that I'll be receiving a $100 itunes card. Spending money on that macbook pro was probably going to halt my itunes purchases for sometime, but now it seems like i'll have plenty of money to purchase ipod touch apps as well as apps in the mac store.

I think people need to look at this differently, I mean it's not like they absolutely HAVE to give us anything in the first place.

Seriously, how many of these BTS rumors have been true in the last month? Zero. I'm crossing my fingers that this will just be another one.

I must admit

That there are two things that I gather from these posts :-

(1) What Apple may eventually end up doing will be good for its shareholders.

(2)Given the fact they have a fairly large fan base, why should they be bothered by what people on forums like this say ?

However if the percentage of disappointed "potential " buyers makes up 1 % of fan base , then the story line will be different

I was pretty upset about this when I first read it, since I don't buy any music or movies or TV shows from iTunes, but the reminder that it should work for the App store (both Mac and iOS) has made me a bit happier about it.

Question: Can you get the student discount on iWork through the App store? If not, I may be back to being upset about this.

Edit: Hmm, it's only an $8 difference between student price and regular price for iWork, so never mind. I'm fine either way.

i want two macs

could anyone tell me that if i buy an imac and a mbp in the promotion do i qualify for the offer twice, and yes, i know i'm greedy. the apple site says that you can get five rebates off one receipt and you can use the discount for one desktop and one laptop in the terms and conditions but not sure if i've understood it properly.

This is also me starting to change my windows machines for apple so if anyone wants to offer some reassurance that it's a good move to make me feel better about spending over £2000, it's more than welcome .
