I'm confused as to why you people expect them to tell you something different? Even if they do know something and really its only a 50/50 chance they do, and they're most definitely not allowed to disclose this information. Its always been this way. They have nothing to gain from divulging extra information to you that no one else knows, and to be honest I've already seen 4 or so people post up chats with them and get THE EXACT SAME ANSWER.

I mean I understood it back when it was a complex (not really but more so than this) issue of upgrade eligibility, but this is cut and dry. If at the start of the business day on the East Coast there is a BTS promotion then its on. If not, better luck next week.

The official announcement about unlocked iphone was at 1am PDT Tues, maybe BTS will be around 1am PDT Wed

I'm in bold.

You are chatting with Randal D, an Apple Expert
Hi, my name is Randal D. Welcome to Apple!
hello. randald. how are you today
Hello!
Great, thanks.
you sound very intelligent and engaging. perhaps you may answer my question
How may I assist you today?
i am at which time of this day the educational "back to school" promotion begins.
We just have info to provide on our current products and promos unfortunately.
please provide them
There is a $100 printer rebate currently.
Also there are discounts on new Macs for college students.
what do you mean by currently
As in right now, today.
You can order a Mac today and get those offers.
but correct me if i am incorrect, but it is actually tomorrow in some places currently, yes?
what offers exist tomorrow then

You can visit www.apple.com/promo for the most up to date info on our promos.
currently?
Exactly.
i am currently confused as i have been told to expect a promotion tomorrow, which it currently is where i am. sadly it is still today where you are currently. when will it be tomorrow there when the promotion will be current?
Sorry if you may have received some inaccurate info.
Did you visit that link above?
That would be the most accurate info we have.
currently no. i am talking with you
Okay feel free to visit that link to see about our current offers.
very well then, i feel as if i have been told nothing i do not already not know.

Wow, you really made yourself sound like a real jerk to the poor representative who pretty much is not able to tell you what future promotions are happening (or she loses her job even if she knew).

I mean you must have seen that several other people already tried this and failed, what made you think you were different? Cause unlike them you decided if you pretty much tried to be condescending to the rep they would all the sudden cave in fear of looking useless to you? I think if they are smart they'll do what their employer, the person who has the power to fire them, wants them to do which is keep quiet until the promotion is active.

I think I'm extra annoyed for the rep cause you obviously are reading this forum so you obviously already knew they couldn't tell you anything (as the guy below me said, you've seen three other chats and they all said the same thing).

Seriously.

Geeze, it's only a few hours until you find out if the promotion is going to start Wednsday and if it is going to be the 100 dollar certificate. I feel sorry for the ones working the chat lines tonight having to endlessly tell people "we do not know"/"We are unable to tell you that" when everyone thinks it is their own smart idea to go bug them about it. And then to post it here.. by now you don't look like you are clever or original anymore as four (or more) people have already done the same thing.

After following this thread for a while, I feel compelled to comment about the "time of announcement." I did a search for all the Apple emails in my Mail inbox from the past few years, and all the specials/new products/announcements/etc have almost no correlation in announcement time.

For example, one of the back to school sale emails from 2009 was received at ~4:00pm, whereas announcements for new iMacs were at 1 and 4am.

Point being... don't freak out just because it's not announced at midnight. If anything it'll probably be some time in the middle of the night or even tomorrow afternoon (if it really starts tomorrow).

Since apple stores are putting up all there signs and I guys an iTunes card will do. Can I buy office was this and software?!?!? Anyone know

Yeah I don't remember the exact price on Office, but im 98% sure its in the mac app store meaning you're set. I'm positive iWork is in their and it's $80

from Chronicwire on twitter

LEAK: Apple's BTS promotion slightly delayed, not starting Wednesday. Also, sources have confirmed the $100 iTunes gift card rumor is true.

I think I might be coming from a different angle than most, so I decided to de-lurk, register, and actually add to the conversation. Of course, having just read through all seventeen pages, I realize how little this'll actually add. At most I've got about four-ish hours before this is rendered moot. But I'll keep typing anyway... I'm a bit verbose, so it might be easier to skip to the bottom.

I graduated from high school last month, and will be going away to a pricy private school this fall. Thankfully, because of scholarships/ grants/ loans, I'll be able to afford the school without bankrupting my family. Of course, when I realized that the price was within our budget, my parents decided that I deserved a new phone (iPhone!) and that I could start looking at laptop computers.

I was raised on PCs, though, so my search for a good computer started with those...not that I had any prejudices against Macs, but that's just what I knew. Of course, the more I looked and the more I talked, I started to realize that Macs weren't terrible. And so I began my research on Macs.

ANYWAY, a month later, and here I am. I've never owned a Mac, never owned an iPod and, up until recently (three weeks ago), I had never owned an iPhone. I've already spent a fair sum of money on apps/ music/ everything else I'm interested in (which is why the gift card doesn't hold quite the same value as if I had known three weeks ago), but I still want(ed) an iPod. Not to resell; I wanted to actually use the thing. A novel idea. I know.

I'm not whining that Apple decided to go with the iTune's gift card, and I'm not whining that the iPod deal is off the table (Both rumors? Ce la vie...), but I am a little disappointed. Heck, a lot disappointed. I'm not gonna call it a deal breaker, but it does change how I was viewing the purchase and, as an incoming college student, I don't have a ton of money to throw around. It's Apple's choice, but that doesn't mean my dreams for a shiny new iPod weren't crushed in the process.

Also, to echo the posts before me... do you guys get off on messing with those poor Apple employees who have to deal with your ridiculous questions? Do you honestly believe that, by acting like ignorant ten year olds, they'll disclose more information? You make yourselves sound like morons who shouldn't have access to the internet; let alone the ability to purchase a computer. Grow up.

TL;DR -- I wanted an iPod. I'm not whining, but I am sad. Not all of us were gonna resell the iPod, anyway. I understand that this post won't have any impact on the deal, but not all of us are whiny/greedy jerkfaces. Don't mess with customer service people; they might spit on your laptops.

Just buy it from Amazon

Considering Amazon's discounts (usually more than $100 on Apple computers), plus No Sales Tax (in selected states), plus free shipping (Premium members), you can really come out ahead and skip Apple and their silly promo and their 10% educational discount.

Complete and utter bullsheet :apple:

what am I going to use a $100 iTunes Gift Card on when I already have all of the apps I need and no Ipod?????????

Screw you :apple:

I already see the longs lines of students getting their free Xbox's

Wall Street is going to kill you tomorrow on this news.

Wait you got no iPod at all?

less valued

I will still be buying my new macs no matter what offer is or isn't available because ultimately i want macs and not a pc. If it's true that apple offered free ipods in another country just two weeks ago and not here in the uk or in the us then it does seem strange that as a company they think more of there customer base abroad than at home. Hopefully i'll be able to get some sympathy from american customers now as here in the uk, we've being paying far more than you guys for anything apple for ever.

Sigh. I'm tempted to just bite the bullet and order now, BTS or not.

I've never been a patient person and I've waited this long. I'm going for it tonight!
My thoughts are buying it at Best Buy and if a BTS comes out I will either ask them to price match or I'll return it and go to the apple store. I have a premier reward zone card and a 45 day return policy comes with that. Any holes in my thinking?

Are some of you serious? I understand shopping for the best deal but the folks who are saying they won't buy a mac now because it doesn't come with a free iPod and will get a PC, I don't understand that.

I would like to think you choose a computer because it fulfills your needs and macs and pcs are different animals. I could understand if someone said that they were going to get a Dell (dude!) rather than a HP because Dell was running some deal, but I know I choose mac primarily because I liked OS X better than Windows (after being a Windows user since I started using computers).

It seems kind of lame to me that you would base a decision solely on what free gift the manufacturer was offering. There's no law that says Apple MUST offer a B2S special, it's nice they have the last few years; now that MS is trying to compete more strongly in the college sector (in which Apple has been steadily growing the last few years), everyone is whining and saying I'm going to get my $699 Windows pc and the X-box. Well, OK, good luck, God Bless, and I hope you enjoy your 4GB X-box.

I got my college student's i5 MBP 13" at Microcenter for $999 ($100 less than the educational discount) 3 weeks ago because I wanted it for Graduation day and I'm glad I did; he's been enjoying his new mac for the last 3 weeks and learning more about how OS X works before he leaves for school in August. So, instead of a $100 gift card, or a "free" iPod, I saved $100 off the top.

Amortize the thing over a 4 year college life and it's less than a pizza a month. Or, just buy a PC and whine about that for four years. Your choice.

$200 > $100 > $0

I think our country is in the predicament it's in because of entitlement attitudes like the ones I'm reading about here.
