"Mr. Tribble, your thoughts on mobile privacy, please."

Bud Tribble: "There really isn't any."

Pretty simple.

When are we going to see hearings on the massive privacy violations in ObamaCare, the "stimulus" bill (which was mostly about other stuff), the renewal of the PATRIOT act, etc?

The government has removed the concept of privacy as a basic right, which, by the way, the constitution doesn't allow them to do.

There's supreme court rulings on this-- believe it or not, one of they key ones was Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion by finding that anti-abortion laws violated women's right to privacy.

I trust Apple to do the right thing, because they've always done right by me.

I trust the federal government to do the wrong thing, because they've never done right by me, and they've constantly lied about it. (Even the Privacy Act of the 1970s reduced privacy, and the few protections it did provide are routinely violated by the federal government now.)

Oh, right, they can get PR for themselves by going after Apple and %90 of the people never bothered to read the bills I referred to earlier and so have no clue that the government has put privacy violations into law.

Yup, PR, its why some posting here are paid for it or obligated to do it by CONTRACT

What the Senate really should be doing a hearing on is the governmental abuse of people's data. Without a search warrant the police should not have access to the data on people's cellphones, laptops or other electronics. This is a violation of the Fifth Amendment and privacy. Any data they get should be thrown out of court for unlawful search and seizure.

After hearing Apple's explanation for this geolocation cache, and programming GPS software myself at work, they make perfect sense. The iPhone *is* very quick at receiving a decent position even in less optimal environments. And that's no doubt thanks to it having a decent idea of where you last were. This helps in providing a smooth end-user experience. This is also why Android also did it, no doubt. It's probably no new idea in the industry. *I* should do it in our software too. No need for conspiracies, when logic and information makes better sense.

So...

This title:

"Apple's Bud Tribble to Testify in Senate Hearing on Mobile Privacy"

... could in essence be changed to this:

"Apple to Teach Senate on Geolocation Services"

i'd prefer they have hearings on why the freaking price of gas has gone through the roof the last few weeks.

i'd prefer they have hearings on why the freaking price of gas has gone through the roof the last few weeks.

You sure that had nothing to do with your privacy invaded, you can also watch the rug pulled from under you if people knew when you where going to the toilet in your home thanks to the iPhone lol

BTW we pay less for oil then anyone on the planet, everyone else has to buy it in Dollars, except Iran and up until recently Libya, almost there, maybe sooner then IRaq took, i hate politics

Apple is pretty good

Throughout this whole ordeal, Apple has conducted themselves as an honest business interest with the consumer interest at the front of their decisions.

Has anyone here commented on Google's actions and interest. Nope! Google owners think that if you have privacy concerns, maybe you shouldn't do the bad things that others might be concerned about.

Apple made decisions that might have been better. They have improved those decisions almost immediately. (less than a week. Name me one time EVER that the US Government corrected a grave error in a week ... you can't do it)

I am pretty much a combination of an apple fan and anti-government-control-freak, so I don't see any down side to Apple on this.

Waiting for Goofle's response. And Stewart Smalley (al freaking-frankin for you non-political animals out ther) is an A$$ of epic proportions that stole that election and should not be seated today in the US senate.)

I read the title "Apple's Bud Tribble to Testify" four times before I realized Bud Tribble was a name. I kept thinking what is Tripple and what was tripling or budding? Ha ha oh well.

Is it just me or does anyone else dislike "Bud" as a name?

These security issues suggests Apple has only collected location data,

MEANWHILE they can see all the Spotlight data which means all your files plus read texts, see anything in iPhoto like faces even though you never tagged anyone and cant stand the un named boxes that appear by a face, also even though you delete any photos in iPhoto a thumbnail stays in the app itself so spotlight can send it back to Apple during a software update, just look at the packages and see for yourselves, and all this is on by default.

Also over at apple discussion forums the only help provided are hacks which violate the software agreement on Apple's site itself and the very site Apple would remove anything one say they don't like that criticizes them over this.

While yet no one is able to turn these functions off and they are on by default., the only thing Apple´s cyber army posts are accusations like comparing what other companies who provide free social networking services do that violate privacy laws, while yet this is not a free service but a Apple product, talk about information collecting and fishing scams, Marketing companies pay up to 200 dollars for a single household phone call for information like this and Apple did this with out users knowing it.

I think the biggest privacy problem is that Apple itself is who tags all photos with location data while their site suggests if your device did they can not control it, the SECOND biggest issue to yet hit the news is the fact that Apple's spotlight collects photo thumbnails, even of pictures already deleted from iPhoto as i mentioned, they claim its to help evaluate recent documents for a feature where osx displays them in the side bar, but i am certain millions of people who erase a few bad photos, specifically public figures and more will flip out if they found out thumbnails of their UNWANTED and DELETED photos are in the hands of Apple.home

As i posted this i read that Apple has NSA on staff too, no wonder

Apple will not lose the case. If only Google was being tried...

Your comparing Apples with Oranges here, Google is a free service alike Twitter and Facebook, no one HAs to post their private info on these services if they did not trust them. Google already paid fines and is due in court for more, they dont mind using our tax payers money and believe it was worth it.

On the other hand, Apple would have to offer money back to users who where not aware that thy paid for products that collected and even sold information with out their permission and consent.

While Apple sounds like they have a future all this suggests to many that they are behaving as if they have reached the end of the rope, maybe over Steve Jobs been sick or as one suggested where its a fact that Apple now has NSA staff working in their security department and illegally spying on US citizens and abroad in countries also concerned about espionage on its citizens, companies and economy.

To think Apple has NSA staff and all this is going on clearly points to hard evidence all this was intentional and Apple is liable.

No one paid google money and google is not liable for damages other then violations of privacy on their own part, on the other hand Apple should return moneys to owners of devices they purchased and would never of if they knew that the devices where literally BUGGED, collecting private data and simply had back doors.

Sounds like Apple is heading to a dead end

It is illegal and nothing can legitimize NSA for spying on its own citizens,
Just as in Hitler's Enabling Act, so Bush Jr. forced the Homeland Security bill through Congress which gave him complete dictatorial powers.
The rest is up to Americans to deal with if they have a problem with a rogue government., otherwise live with it or leave the country is what they say.

Also the patriot act demises US citizens by tricking them to pledge their lives for the country, even if a president is suspected of treason., again something Hitler used against the German citizens when he flooded 400,000 civilians in tunnels while been bombed so he himself can escape.

According to the witness list included in the notice, Apple's Bud Tribble will be providing testimony during the session, which is entitled "Protecting Mobile Privacy: Your Smartphones, Tablets, Cell Phones and Your Privacy".
Worst hearing title e-ver. Can we get any more any more redundant?

Either what is before or after the colon would have been fine. Together, ugh. Plus, "Your smartphones" then, later, "your privacy"? What happened? They were talking about your smartphones, then someone else's tablets and cell phones jumped in, and then oh heck back to your privacy?

i guess no one here dislikes Jobbs and Apple, but evil certainly has got the best of some of the coolest people, we all can change right.

You claimed that "Apple already lied". I asked you for evidence, and it seems that you don't have any. So what does that say about you if you accuse Apple of lying without any evidence of it? Without actually being able to state where they supposedly lied?

For heavens sake. Bud Tribble was the team leader of the original Macintosh software development team starting in 1981. He is responsible for creating Mac OS, without an X.

Apple will not lose the case. If only Google was being tried...

What "case"? There is no "case". There is nobody being tried. Two weeks ago all hell broke lose because someone found a file on an iPhone and gazillions of clueless idiots thought their privacy was somehow violated. It looks like these guys in the senate don't know more about technology than the average MacRumors poster, but they had the infinite wisdom to invite Apple to send someone who will explain everything to them. And Bud Tribble is probably the best man to do this, having worked in the software industry in top positions (responsible for development of the original Macintosh Operating System, co-founder of Next) for the last 30 years.

Gnasher, We all agree that Steve Jobs is one of the most remarkable public figures in the world today, he can win the president's seat faster then anyone else, NOW. but that does not mean Apple was not sued last year for collecting personal and political data of users as several links you suggested where NOT TRUE. s

Lets look at the time line:
1 Before the iPhone 4 was released: NSA takes over apple iphone and ipad security as analysts,
http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-new...avy-officer-new-global-security-director.html

2 Dec 23 a lawsuit is filed against Apple by the law firm KamberLaw on behalf of Jonathan Lalo, a Los Angeles County resident, in federal court in San Jose, California, http://benton.org/node/47269
The complaint accuses Apple of allowing ad networks to track users’ app activity based on a unique identification number. It also charged that apps were selling other information to ad networks including “users’ location, age, gender, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation and political views.”

3 Now a couple of fanboys found a actual file proving Apple did all this with out users consent and your trying o play it down while they all want their money back, even congress wonders if these violations helped demise political agendas, im not saying this now they all are, read the links.

http://www.trackur.com/if-apple-lied-about-the-iphone-4-it-could-be-game-over

I love there innovation., until Apple provides solid proof for its users all these worried paranoid people will not feel comfortable about this no matter what we try to tell them,

4 this link claims they LIED about tracking poeple, they actually patented it too!, thats not proof?

http://www.gizmag.com/apple-patent-application-indicates-jobs-may-have-lied/18551/

BTW people with Little Snitch say that Locations tries to dial back from iTunes almost hourly, and they do not have a iphone., you know to shut this off?

I'm sorry, are you claiming that article is some proof of something about privacy or big-time politics? Quote:

trackur.com said:
No, I’m not talking about the antenna issue, the screen issue, or even the issue with the proximity sensor....

...Wow! Did Apple lie?

Its official announcement categorically stated that the issue was due to a software glitch. What if it turns out that this is a massive cover-up by Apple? What if it has to admit that there is in fact a hardware issue. It could try and claim that its initial testing missed the defect, but it would be hard for the company to convince anyone after stating:

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped.
A guy who so vehemently claims to NOT be talking about a certain hardware issue, then focuses the entire article on it hardly seems reliable to me. Not to mention it says nothing about this topic we are discussing here.

4 this link claims they LIED about tracking poeple, they actually patented it too!, thats not proof?
Proof of what? This article does the exact same thing as all the threads here. Points out the facts that Location makes note of cell towers, possibly with other data, to STORE ON YOUR PHONE FOR YOUR USE, then radically misinterprets every point. It doesn't mention what data is sent to Apple, which Apple claims is just the tower data. (and wifi) I guess if we find something about that, otherwise....

Just more stupid FUD and hype. Again.

I'm sorry, are you claiming that article is some proof ? what that apple patent all this a year or two prior to S.Jobs saying its not true, BS and lying is not the same., My sweet Apple never lies, they patent this whole thing on paper you see, its not lying so your all wrong, just becuase you did not know about it before does not mean they lied, you all should never buy Apple products if you know that Google and facebook does the same thing for free, you have something to hide i bet, yes thats right, your hiding something, i dont mind apple having access to my iphone, i have nothing interesting on my iphone, its your fault if you paid for this product and anything on it you did not want to share with apple, atleast apple does not share that information publically like Google and Facebook by publishing all your friends and photos, it instead stays safe with Apple and their 2000 staff members online.
And the hype that the iPhone antenna worked is true too?

lol sorry i just had to laugh, Apple busted hands down yet you fanboys are willing to bend over backwards (again). i warn anyone who trusts you to have Vaseline on site with Apple been so good behind the SCENES.

talk about snakes

ha ha Apple busted!!!

Their answers also sounds familiar if you ever work in criminal court rooms and watch everyone appeal before the judge (not me, had no idea, adjourned trials for years)

I'm interested to see how they will sell this one to congress

hey if you have a sec, download this app called little snitch and watch how many times locations dials home from iTunes and iPhoto, UNBELIEVABLE ! and remember this is on a iMac not a iPhone or iPad with a Phone card storing info of towers blah blah as they have been trying to bluff us all about.

Why would locations dial home both in iTunes then in iPhoto as well!

Also, you can not shut off faces, locations and on the iPad 2 iMovie will not even run with out turning on locations., on the desktop side there is a hack, of course your vulnerable to privacy issues.

To put the icing on the cake, iPhoto will keep a thumbnail of every photo you take, erase from within its own trash, it stays as a nice huge thumbnail that is even bigger then the iPhone's screen.

I have seen companies pay up for violations like this and its worth it to them, bring a competitor down, corporate espionage is a huge issue, maybe the NSA staff or some in secure bankers on Apple's side got out of hand, who knows
