I think what was meant was when you display something with a black background, not when the screen is switched off. The problem of LCDs is the backlight bleeding through (the pixels and often the edge). With the phone off, there naturally is no backlight.

I was able to look this weekend (albeit not extensively). When a black background was near/around the notch, there wasn't a perceptible difference from a normal viewing distance.
 
When I look @ my coworkers S8 I see an enviable screen, when I look at iPhone X I see a companies proprietary technology outsourced to another company for manufacturing that looks just like a laughable first attempt.

I've always been a fan of LCD vs OLED, because I prefer true whites vs. deep blacks. I can cope with grey blacks, but dingy whites DRIVES ME CRAZY!!! At least with Samsung they give you multiple options for controlling your screen...

What you see doesn't matter, tests where made and it's scientifically proven that the x screen is better.

If the same screen was on the galaxy people would be talking how great it is.
