Apple pretty much ALWAYS puts an older chip in their budget devices, which of course is understandable. It seems however a lot of people don’t expect this for some odd reason.
I’d expect an A11 chip in this device, but wouldn’t be too surprised if it gets and A10 like the “new” iPad.
The chances of it getting an A12 like the pricey X models is pretty much zero, as few would pay much more just to get an OLED screen.
Could also be that the new X models get FaceID gen 2, while this one get gen 1 from current X.

So in summary it will get a cheaper screen and shell, old internals, a single camera and possible old faceid.
I think it will still be the #1 selling iPhone, and Apple will as usual have great profit margins on it as all components have been produced for some time.
I could see it getting an A11 for sure, but definitely not the A10 as the A10 doesn't have the "neural engine" to handle Face ID. Apple also doesn't always put an older chip in their budget devices (think SE with the A9, which was the latest at the time), it probably mostly depends on the economics of making a particular chip at the time as well as how long they plan to have the product on the market (i.e. they are unlikely to put a 2 year old chip in a device that they plan to continue selling without updates for 2+ years).

You guys that won't buy a phone unless its in the 700-800 price range, I just don't get it. I love saving money as much as anyone and can be very frugal myself. But my phone is my main computer these days and I use it so many times every single day. It's one of those things you purchase every two or three years and use the crap out of it. Then you sell the (still valuable) device and use that money to facilitate your upgrade when the time is right. I'll take all of the features of the iPhone X - OLED screen, awesome camera, force touch, Face ID... and thank you very much. Guess I just know what I'm worth. Certainly not sitting around waiting for anyone to make a cheaper and cut down version so I can be using THAT every day.

End of rant.

Nice. Going to sell like wildfire if it starts at $700. Market share is once again a priority. Stay the course Apple.

Sounds like a great upgrade from my 6+ as long as it has the A12 chip.

Price estimates are all over the place though. First it was $600-$700, then $650-$750, then Ming came out with a potential $500 price which doesn't even sound reasonable. Now the price rumor has increased to $700-$800.

I'm really hoping for a starting price of $699 or less with 64GB of storage.

I’d say your right on target. ;)

If your time was worth so much then you'd be buying a new machine with the latest tech every year. But you don't.

But like I said, I'd expect the 6.1" LCD to have A12 anyway. And even if it didn't, it would get nothing older than A11.

You are assuming Face ID v2.0 relies on the same chip set as Face ID v1.0. ;)

But WOULD it have 1000 nits of brightness in Apple's implementation or would they just artificially limit it to XXX nits without auto brightness turned on, like they already do on the existing phones?

Auto brightness is too buggy to hassle with, so I never use it, meaning I can never get the max brightness out of my phone. I would expect the same will happen here.

Nits /= overall brightness.

Measurements such as "1000 nits" refer to the peak nits that the display is capable of. In other words, peak brightness, although it's more accurate to think of it as highlights. It shares an inverse relationship with screen brightness. As overall brightness increases, peak nits decreases, and vice versa.

For example, let's say you're watching a video of a campfire at night. A display capable of 1000 nits would make the fire as well as the flickering of embers and the sparks that crackle upward appear vivid and brilliant against the nighttime background (aka the HDR effect). The overall brightness of the screen is pretty low- especially for OLED- maybe 2-10% because it's very dark aside from the campfire. The peak nits for the camp fire would be very high, upwards of 900-1000 nits in this otherwise very dark scene.

On the flip side, let's say you're watching a video of a grassy field under a bright blue noontime sky. The overall brightness is high for such a scene, and so the peak nits would be lower.

If you watched a video at a full 1000 nits or 1000 cd/m2 brightness, it'd be painful to watch. You'd sear your eyeballs. :)

They've already given 3D Touch several years, and it's still an abysmal failure. It's time for Apple to give up on 3D Touch already.

It says right in the specs it supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

Video Playback

    • Video formats supported: HEVC, H.264, MPEG-4 Part 2, and Motion JPEG
    • High Dynamic Range with Dolby Vision and HDR10 content
    • AirPlay Mirroring, photos, and video out to Apple TV (2nd generation or later)6
    • Video mirroring and video out support: Up to 1080p through Lightning Digital AV Adapter and Lightning to VGA Adapter (adapters sold separately)6

They haven't explored it fully yet. iOS 13 should be built on 3D Touch, everywhere people want more options, just press harder. Like the camera app could have 3D touch for the settings.

I realize it's pretty boring but I'm not going to debate this topic. There's really no debate, but of course that could be debated all day on the internet.

I never said my time was worth so much per se (not that it isn't). Just that I deserve to use the device from which I derive the most pleasure until it's time to upgrade. It's simply a quality of life thing.

Apples iPhone x screen is made by Samsung and it's better than the S8 screen.

When I look @ my coworkers S8 I see an enviable screen, when I look at iPhone X I see a companies proprietary technology outsourced to another company for manufacturing that looks just like a laughable first attempt.
[doublepost=1525975001][/doublepost]
I haven't seen any dingy or dirty iPhone X screens. They all look slightly better than my 7's screen, which is great. Samsung does a great job with the screens on their high-end phones but Apple's certainly aren't bad by comparison.
[doublepost=1525965802][/doublepost]

People want what they don't/can't have but then don't want it anymore once they have it or have access to it. Before the iPhone X: "Apple needs to switch to OLED". After iPhone X: "I don't like OLED."

I've always been a fan of LCD vs OLED, because I prefer true whites vs. deep blacks. I can cope with grey blacks, but dingy whites DRIVES ME CRAZY!!! At least with Samsung they give you multiple options for controlling your screen...

I thought the big next thing was going to be OLED

Actually, if the rumors align correctly, micro LED will be the next iteration of displays for Apple with the iPhone and Apple Watch. That technology alone will supersede OLED with brightness, improve battery efficiency and resolution.

.

The SE got the A9 which was the latest processor available at the time

the other budget phone they did was the plastic iPhone 5 (do not remember the name). That got a crappy A6 if I recall correctly

anything is possible

The iPhone 5c was the basically the exact same thing as the iPhone 5, just with a plastic shell. Both had A6.

The iPhone 6.1" would be an entirely new product.

The display is an odd resolution around 1080p, still it’s an LCS but not IPS so will be interesting to see how it fairs, reviews are positive of this phone so far though.
Still it’s a bit big, I’d imagine Apple would ditch the chin at the bottom if it uses the screen for an iPhone? Will be interested to see what this iPhone ends up like.

Ideally it needs 3D Touch though.

You assume that Face ID 2.0 exists and that the rumored 6.1" iPhone will get it. It's all rumors and guesses at this point...

Face ID on the X was a Beta. Everything will be improved with the new sensors and algorithms. I’ll still be using an 8 with Touch ID for as many years as possible. ;)

LG managed to produce burning LCD panels on the previous generation MacBook Pro, so I wouldn’t get too excited just yet if screen burn is a reason for you to shy away from OLED.

They'll update the Face ID compute unit to speed it up for sure. The question isn't if, but when. My guess/hope is with A12, especially since it's likely getting a shrink to 7 nm.

Could not give a damn about OLED so I am fine with that :D I am probably one of the few who do not like those „tint..ish oilfilm“ looking OLED screens at all

I'm in that club also.
Can't stand the oversaturated, unnatural colors from AMOLED/OLED.
Make it bright and accurate and I really don't care about the technology behind it.

The only device listed on the Dolby website for Dolby Vision is the LG G6. Go figure.

You aren't the only person who would rather purchase a good lcd display. The rumored lack of 3dt though is a bummer, I really got used to using it.
