If Apple bought Adobe with 20% premium, they would still have about 14 billion dollars left over... Just saying.

I like that line of thought. Let Apple clean up some of the annoying inconsistencies across Adobe's Creative Suite, optimize even more so for Mac, and drop the price considerably.

Best idea I've heard in a while.

EA is good but twitter? twitter is just another fad.

Another fad? You mean kinda like Facebook was / is? Come on now ... all those social networking sites were poo-pooed when they first came out. Even sites like DIGG were questionable endeavors when it first came out, but look at them today!

I'll just say this ... it must be nice to be Kevin Rose, Mark Zuckerberg, or Jack Dorsey right about now. How could YOU spend $700M? :p

I'd love to see Apple buy EA ... way to jump in with both feet! Only good things can happen if Apple demonstrates serious interest in gaming. Well ... good for most people. There will still be a handful of snobs who think Macs are too "special" to be used by gamers. I hope those folks get pwned!

:apple:

Apple wants Twitter so that it can replace SMS as the global messaging standard :D

"Announcing the new iPhone. This device will revolutionize wireless service. How you ask? There is no SMS...at all! Instead, messages will be exchanged using Apple's newly acquired Twitter service..."

Yeah, except that majority of people out there don't use iPhone or smartphones.. or have Internet data plans. SMS works perfectly fine on my wife's lowly Razr.

And I don't need Twitter for messaging over data network - plenty of other options there - AIM, Skype, etc. The former interoperates with SMS by the way, unlike Twitter.

It doesn't make sense to buy twitter. They have no tech, they have no business model. All they have are a bazillion users with ADD who will wander off to the next bright shiny thing if upset in the slightest. Also supposedly Twitter is self-sufficient, they are allegedly getting money for every text message they send.

It may make sense to buy EA, just to get some of the employees, artists, programmers, especially the ones who deal in depth with the graphics cards and physics.

With that stack of cash they could buy a small to medium sized country, the Bahamas or perhaps Mongolia

Sarcasm detector not working today? ;) lol

Yeah but seriously, that $700m is not far from an imaginary number. Keeping in mind that Yahoo just shut down Geocities, a company which they paid $3.6bn for back in 1999... I bet it didn't seem so stupid back then.

At least buy a company which produces something! Maybe they should have a go at Chrysler or GM, they could finally create that Apple car that will only run on 3% of the roads :p

What about them buying Nvidia?

The GPU is where its at these days. This makes more sense than Twitter or EA. Apple is, after all, a hardware company that happens to have great OS' running on them.

:rolleyes:

As Twitter mostly seems to be an US only thing I bet Apple will go for it as Appple never cared about overseas' markets. ;)

Apple is perfectly free to make software changes to integrate with Twitter or to make business deals with Twitter without having to own the company.

Well Twitter produces one thing: Data. Tons of bloody Data.

The handful of snobs your talking about could be all PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 owners mate, not to mention PC gamers.
Does Apple really give a toss about the other online music store's? NO. So if it entered the games development markets what would make you think Apple would not want to develop it's own games platform and monopolise the market in the same way?

some possible target market caps...

Well, twitter is private....

EA = 6.83B
NVidia = 6.31B
AMD = 2.62B
Adobe = 13.89B
Avid = 456.33M
CBS = 4.9B

remembering of course and acquisition will cost a tad bit more

Home Automation and AV Distribution

As homes become more automated and as people want access to their audio and video files throughout the house and remotely, Apple should be looking to buy a company like Crestron or Control 4. It is very clear that Apple wants to be the control center for your home and remotely accessed audio and video files. I should add that Cisco is headed that way and Microsoft has been tinkering around with this idea for a long time.

I think I'd have to go for a strange halfway house between Doctor Q and the rest. While I agree with him advocating pumping money into research, cool stuff can only get you so far. I think Apple should look into creating (buying?) Mac versions of commonly used Windows programmes for which there is no Mac equivalent of eg CAD, medical-related (notes). Adopting a more business-friendly approach could work wonders: by moving the Mac mini towards the business market, you could really generate some marketshare and moolah in a way games could only dream of.

Instead of buying ******** sites like twitter for 700 Millions, they should invest the money to sell macs a bit cheaper. Sorry again, but are they nuts ??? Twitter is the worst **** I have ever seen. Did anybody here ever register to that site ? WTF

As things stand right now Adobe's CS has significantly better integration compared to FCS so if anything Apple should buy Adobe so Adobe's software engineers can fix Apple's ProApps. I'm hopping the next version of FCS has a lot of good, worthwhile improvements (as opposed to gimmicky bells & whistles) because Apple has pretty much been standing still for two years while Adobe and Avid have continued to more forward.

Lethal

Seeing how Apple acquires businesses, they mostly concentrate in those that will add future technologies (i.e.: Fingerworks with Multi Touch) or potential future technologies (PA Semi, new ARM chips for future iPhones?) or software that create future content (Shake) by Content makers (TV or movie studios)

Twitter is in essence messaging, and Apple would only need to build hooks in iChat and other apps to take advantage of it's popularity without having to spend $700 million. By itself it only generates content (when breaking news happen), or idle chatter (most of the other time).

NO, it would not make sense for Apple to buy Twitter as it doesn't add anything to the existing product line.

Buying EA, also, doesn't make sense. EA works with all platforms and Apple would most likely consider a game company that would be exclusive to it.

Could Apple buying Twitter free them from AIM/AOL? Is that in their interest?

Even if apple were to purchase EA, EA would still have to make games for all the consoles, at least sports games and movie games, as thats in there contract.:rolleyes:
And M$/Sony would never let apple buy EA, at least not without a fight.

Oh man, I canNOT wait to see what Take-Two's response to this will be. Especially if Apple does buy EA. Though, I will credit where it's due. EA has become way less of a soul-sucking company. Activision has taken it's place. I know it's now called Activision Blizzard, but I refuse to the glorious name of Blizzard next to garbage Actvision.

Ha ha. Doublemint Doubletake Time. So Apple should spend money to make Macs less expensive (or did you mean cheaper as in of less quality?) so they can make a smaller profit. Genius plan!

Seriously, the materials that make up Macs are all commodities. The stories suppliers tell all indicate Apple is a brutal negotiator when it comes to getting a good price for parts. I'm not sure what Apple is suppose to invest in to magically make Macs less expensive while maintaining current profit margins.

I agree w/ you though that buying Twitter or EA makes zero sense. I'm not sure how you monetize Twitter plus its a fad that will die as soon as the next technology comes around or people get as bored with other people's lives as they are there own.

As for EA, EA is already making games for the iPhone and how many times has SJ said Apple is not a SW company. Heck, one of the first things he did when he returned to Apple was to spin-off Claris. Think of all the platforms EA makes SW for. For those of us who love Apple HW this would not be good at all.

You do realize that if they sold Macs for cheaper it would actually destroy Macs and Apple in the long run, right?
