You read her name wrong - Surf Ace, that women will be totally fine.
Not everyone stays at Apple under Cook, some leave faster.

The big question is when is Tim Cook leaving.

When he has been cooked enough, hopefully as soon as possible.

Apple doesn’t seem to have a great track record in bringing senior people in from outside the company.

I wonder why?

Carol Surface was the #1 chief human resources officer in 2022! You can’t fix culture with Apple employees who think they can walk on water like Gandi.
Yes, a lot of people seem to be unaware that a CPO is a very standard position in most mid/large organisations.

Generally it’s a bit concerning when someone at the level walks after 20 months. She may not have been the right fit - that happens - or there may be an underlying issue.

My respect, and I'm not alone here, has greatly diminished for the C-Suite with titles like Chief People Officer, Chief Listening Officer, Chief Happiness Officer (I'm not kidding), etc.

Yes, it is a stupid title, which is just a re-branding of "'Senior VP, Human Resources." Even "Human Resources" is a dumb kind of euphemism, but we are used to what it means. As a one-time employment lawyer from California representing management, my take has always been that HR does two things. It's job is to staff and keep full needed positions and it is also basically law enforcement for Corporations--to make sure that the policies are applied across the board (discipline, promotions, pay, vacation, etc.). I am now in Minnesota, where Medtronic got its start and is headquartered. It has the reputation of being one of the best places to work, and I've known several employees from there, all of whom confirm this. I am guessing this is why she was hired. So, her departure is strange, for sure.

“Chief People Officer” !?!
Just another garbage job title.
🤮
Nothing wrong with it, just a slightly nicer way of saying “head of HR”

Also it’s actually perfectly descriptive, better than most other C suite titles I can think of, you hear it and you know instantly what she does.

I never understood why it's called "Human Resources" in English. To me it seems disrespectful to a human to call him/her a "resource".

The department is the "resource" for "humans" (workers). The "humans" in the department are the coordinator, manager, director, etc.

Humans are the greatest resource. What about the phrase manpower. It doesn't have to be disrespectful, though HR does often treat employees poorly.

Apple's chief people officer Carol Surface is leaving the company, reports Bloomberg. Surface joined Apple in February 2023, so she has been at the company less than two years.

Most senior executives are at Apple for much longer periods of time, and it is not clear why Surface is leaving. She was hired when Apple decided to split its primary human resources role from retail last year, and she reported directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Deirdre O'Brien had been handling both the retail and people (or HR) role, but when Surface took over, O'Brien transitioned to just overseeing retail. With Surface leaving, O'Brien will once again oversee both people and retail.

Surface was previously the chief human resources officer at Medtronic, and the chief people officer title was created when she joined Apple.

I have worked with people from Medtronic. They are universally terrible no surprise here.

It used to be called Personnel. The George Carlin effect took over (gradually use longer and fancier words).

Good riddance. If you know anyone who works in retail or on the phones you’ll know that especially since Covid management at Apple have basically been chanting, “let them eat cake, let them eat cake!”

Dealing with the public has gotten way worse since Covid and Apple has still been living in a world where they think it’s okay to not protect their employees from harassment from upset or deranged customers.

For many customers the customer experience is innately tied to the employee experience. And the employee experience is often soaking up vitriol caused by executives taking forever to figure out they had a really bad idea.
I quit Apple this summer after 5+ years. Post-COVID retail at Apple has been hell. We all worked in fear we’d get fired at any time because Apple didn’t want to be caught publicly laying off like everyone else was. So my store lost ~10% of workers from being fired for suddenly the smallest & most random things. The HR/People side of Apple was the way they did it. People loosing their healthcare and income because they were late a few times. Something that was usually dismissed previously. Even one of our managers was suddenly fired for inviting a former employee (who was just fired the week prior) to say hello to their team backstage in a “non-customer area”, and this was one of our top managers of 10 years. It became very scary to work at Apple Stores and caused significant mental health issues store-wide.
