What if I want absolutely nothing to do with this?
At first, like all of the other invasive bullsh!t, it's opt-in. Then when people say **** off and refuse to go along with it, it becomes mandatory.

The thing about selfish people is that they depend on there being enough selfless people in society to end this pandemic for everyone. If there are more selfish people than selfless people, then it'll end up coming back and hurting the selfish people. Karma, as explained by science.
Its purpose is to inform people of possible exposure and potentially prevent further transmission via self-quarantine. So for instance, it can limit the spread to the 5 people patient A is exposed to rather than spreading it to 25 patient C's the 5 patient B's can potentially spread it to. The goal isn't total prevention, but to limit the impact on the healthcare system. Will this retroactive? Otherwise I don’t see the point. People known with the virus should not be going anywhere and if you run into them it is already too late. What’s the app supposed to do to help?
Because doctors, life scientists, pharmaceutical executives, professors, and government lab employees are low-paid occupations and clearly they're in it for charity.
Hint: the $42 billion basic science research budget for the US NIH is bigger than all the rest, including the military and NASA, put together.
For Google's version, they'll probably target users with ads for sanitary/healthcare products and insurances. The bigger question is how is Google going to handle your privacy? That very much worries me.
Interesting, do you have links to that info? Thank.
The thing that this pandemic has revealed about society is the upsetting number of selfish, self centred people we live amongst.
I'm satisfied with the privacy measures built into this system and would absolutely opt in so that together, we can prevent further infections and end the suffering for everybody.

Incidentally, I have a former collaborator who won a cool $5 mil from NIH years ago and promptly bought himself a yacht. Meanwhile other researcher sit in the back of room bitter about not winning anything for another round. The academic research industry is a horrible dog eat dog world with extremes between winners and losersBecause doctors, life scientists, pharmaceutical executives, professors, and government lab employees are low-paid occupations and clearly they're in it for charity.

And is still gonna turn itself on, just like WLANTurn it off in the settings then.
Why’s are you fighting the control center thing? The toggles in control center disable connections to new devices until the next day. They make this very clear, when you toggle them the text shows “disabling WiFi until tomorrow”.And is still gonna turn itself on, just like WLAN

Learn to read. "Apple also ensured that the contact tracing system will not be enforced by governments and will instead function on an opt-in basis."
then do nothing
Then don't opt-in to this opt-in program.

Next stop: Proles and outer party members will be required to submit proof in order to *not* have the app send an alert to the Stasi and their brown shirt enablers
This still feels creepy, especially with Google involved.

If it's going to be a stand alone app that's fine because people don't have to download it if they choose not to but if it's part of an iOS update and it's on the phone regardless if you want it or not only left with the choice of opting in or out I don't like the idea..
For Google's version, they'll probably target users with ads for sanitary/healthcare products and insurances.
I foresee a day when instead of just tracking you, they will also track that you removed your device. "Home office, user 520590 has been detected to have removed his tracking device. Sending enforcer 204365 to intercept the client to resume secure tracking. Engage!" Scary world we are heading into.
No one in their right mind would volunteer for this and that's why they will make it so you have no choice. They are already doing this is China.
You want to take out a life insurance policy? Boom, show us your "green status".
You want to enter the movie theatre? Boom show us your "green status".
You want to fly internationally? Boom, show us your "green status".
This is how it all starts and has already begun in a few countries like China. You don't think the USA is any different do you? If so, you deserve to have your privacy violated.
You’re seriously suggesting people who are self-isolating and socially distancing yet aren’t in favour of creepy tracking are selfish and deserve to ultimately get infected because of ... karma? Wow!
[...]
But never mind that existing measures are working and are the primary reason for declining infection rates in many countries when there’s the perfect excuse for an “end-game” level of Big Brother technology we can develop under the guise of helping a public health crisis.
By the time you know, you already potentially infected XY people and even if it gets revealed that you may potentially have been in contact but show no symptoms, they not gonna test you anyway. Sooo 🤷🏽♂️
I pray we all stay healthy. I’m shelter in place, only going out for groceries and wearing a mask. But I’m going to pass on this.
This is a pretty innovative solution, and considering I live in a dense, major city that was (and still is) hard hit by the virus, I will opt in.
Another option is to quarantine yourself until the whole country's declared safe![]()

Christophe Fraser calculated mathematical models at the University of Oxford. The result in a simplified form: If 60% participate in tracing and 60% adhere to the recommendations, it does something - even considerably. This can only work if:
- everybody everywhere in the world is opt-in by default
- the user is not the one inputting the fact they tested positive but the testing lab
Otherwise it will be pretty much useless.

Apple today in a press briefing indicated that its upcoming COVID-19 contact tracing system with Google will have a verification flow, meaning that users will be required to submit proof in order to report that they have tested positive for the disease.

As an example, Apple said that a person who tests positive for COVID-19 could receive a QR code with their test results and then scan that QR code within the contact tracing system for confirmation purposes, but the exact implementation remains to be seen. Apple said verification will be handled by an external entity and could vary by region.
Verification will be a very important step in Apple's and Google's contact tracing system, preventing users from falsely reporting that they have tested positive for COVID-19 and inflicting unnecessary worry on others.
Apple also ensured that the contact tracing system will not be enforced by governments and will instead function on an opt-in basis.
Apple and Google revealed plans for their contact tracing system earlier this week. The joint effort will use Bluetooth to alert users when they have potentially come in close contact with someone who later tests positive for COVID-19, while respecting user privacy.
