I wondered because of the long lifespan of computers these day they are compensating by driving costs up? I had 8 plus then my wife wanted it due to better camera etc and I'm using her 6s plus and I don't miss the 8.. The X just doesn't appeal at all.

I thought Apple was planning to leapfrog OLED altogether in favor of micro LED.

Nonetheless, it appears Apple—and perhaps others—have reached a plateau in smartphone innovations. Apple failed to deliver a must-have improvement or feature with the X. The public bores quickly; then it moves on to the next shiny amusement.

Fake news like last year's Nikkei report?

AGAIN, these numbers ARE NOT REAL!!
[doublepost=1517273195][/doublepost]
You do that, and Apple will still be worth 45 billion dollars less then a week ago.... but you go starry eyed at its profits.
Real share holders and investors don’t look purely at profits. They also look at production orders being halved!
How many thousand shares do you own? Seriously. I want to understand your position better so I can gauge whether you're just talking. I own well into the 4 digits, so I am a real investor with a real stake.

REAL shareholders don't act on fake news, particularly when it's been proven fake in the past (Nikkei). Also, it IS all about the profits in the end, not what Apple does with orders or design one quarter or even one year. You have no idea if it's true or why they chose to cut production if they even did or if it was already planned. People have tried and failed time and again to understand the supply chain. It's impossible.

If you're a real investor, you'll listen to what Apple says on Thursday and maybe act on that. Not fake news and unconfirmed sources. Did you realize Nikkei reported no credible source to their story?

I passed on the iphone X because the cost was too great for what I felt it offered me. My wife on the other hand LOVES her iPhone X because it offers her a larger screen in relatively the same size of her iPhone 6s it replaced. Now if they come out with the XsPlus this year I'll be buying.

Price was an absolute non-issue for me
I used the Apple upgrade and was going to get the iPhone 8 Plus, mainly because I was concerned over Face ID
Once I used one at the store, I walked out the the X and never thought twice about the price differential, it was negligible to me
I simply bought the phone I wanted

That's not everyone's situation, obviously, and I understand some not seeing the value of the price differential
We used the ATT next program and for us the price was literally like $12 more a month.... price was also not a consideration for our purchase. Paying cash? Now that may have changed my mind lol.

I don’t understand why they blame on high price of the phone on the oLED screen yet Android has had oLED for quite some time and they weren’t charging $1000+ for the base model.

RE: "lackluster sales for iPhone X"... First off I'll say that I predicted this and was mocked.

The price was a deterrent for me, but not the deal breaker. I do think Face ID is a spectacular concept and probably works as described. But I still find Touch ID more practical, definitely safer in a car, and without it, probably will stop buying iPhones. My feeling on OLED is that I also don't think its worth the extra money, especially since the O stands for organic, which means the screens decay much quicker in lifespan. I do not need truer colors on a phone that bad. Who does?
So I hope Apple is re-thinking its recent moves. They've lost their way. Timmy is too concerned about "Shiny Things."

I wonder how practical hardware-wise it would be to strike a compromise: continue offering Face ID, bring back Touch ID, but remove 3D Touch?

Although I think that would necessitate bringing back the home button too for that to happen.

In which case I'm sure the analyst would see it as normal business practice, however the article is clearly suggesting that production has been further cut due to 'lower than expected sales'.

The likely reasons for that having been discussed in numerous threads.
What you’re not understanding is the “news” is completely based on speculation, the same speculation that is consistently wrong when it comes to Apple and one of the biggest culprits is Nikkei.

You’re taking this story as fact and that they actually have an understanding of the supply chain. They have proven they don’t and they’d literally have no way of knowing anything definitive unless an Apple executive told them.

Come back Feb 1 and we will see how they did. Until then, fake news. I know that’s overused, but it really applies for AAPL. Apple is heavily manipulated around earnings time. It should be illegal what is being done. Wait...it is illegal, just not being enforced.

You’re still going to be mocked until we get real information from Apple, not speculation for a historically terrible source and normal fake news we get around earnings. You new to Apple? I won’t mock you for predicting poor sales, but I’ll mock you for believing stories before the real numbers are out, from Apple. No one else.

Thanks for your anecdote. We're all happy that price is no issue to you.

previously sales were lower than expected in China, but now sales are also lower than expected in US and Europe? - So basically sales was lower than expected in all key markets.

What i find curious was after initial reports about lagging sales of the 8, everyone was saying "don't worry - everyone is holding out for the X." Did that indeed not happen? The sales of the X did not reflect said model preference and hold outs?

The price tag was the reason I just held onto my 7 plus. Hopefully their lineup this year is more reasonably priced with better storage options. Otherwise, a Pixel 3 may be in my future.
I've considered the pixel but to me it is just not an attractive phone. I don't find the X attractive, either, so I'd rather hold off and wait for either Apple or Google to get it right already.

Over $1,200 after taxes is ridiculously high unless you are wealthy.

That or they are really bad at making financial decisions. Believe it or not, although there are millions of those types of people, there aren't enough to hit Apples sale target.

If anyone can, it’s Apple. Of course, I’m sure someday even they’ll realize they can’t spin and smile their way out of every negative reality they find themselves in.
Tell me more about how this is reality. Where is the source other than unnamed sources? You do realize Nikkei has been wrong with th EXACT same story before, only to be debunked when Apple reported actual numbers.

Wait until this Thursday. With Apple, the ONLY reliable numbers are from Apple.

Btw, this “negative reality” you speak of will be an all time high for sales, profit, iPhones sold, and services revenue ever at Apple when they report Q1 on Friday. They already guided for records p. It will just be a matter of how much they beat.

Exactly WHAT is negative about that?

This is what happens when Apple gives customers choice AND carriers offer zero incentives on the more expensive one. BOGO iPhone 8s ($700 for two new phones), or one iPhone X for $1000. Which is the average customer going to choose?

These incentives are around because the iPhone 8 was not selling well initially. Supposedly that was because customers were 'waiting for the X' (which we now all but know isn't the case.) Carriers bought too much supply relative to demand and had to find a way to make back on their investment, hence BOGO.

Seriously, so many of you are utterly clueless about business, stocks, and how this game works. You guys believe everything you read?

This is FAKE news with absolutely zero factual evidence. It’s all extrapolations, speculation, and opinions. Apple goes through this every time earnings release is imminent. If you actually followed the business, you’d know this happens ALL the time for the usual suspects, like Nikkei.

I’d just like all of you to come back Thursday.

You can't say that the OLED panel is the reason for the price of the iPhone X. Samsung Galaxy 8 is the same OLED size and $250 cheaper

I mostly don't want the iPhone X because of a lack of Touch ID.

Siri is always telling me "you need to unlock your iPhone first" and usually if I'm asking Siri something, it means I don't want to pickup my phone and hold it up to my face. Touching phone briefly much more convenient when its in the phone cradle on the dash of my car.

I like my headphone jack too, so iPhone 6S+ where I'm at until the phone goes kaput.
This x10000

Just switched to TMobile and got two iPhone 8+ BOGO. Leaving iPhone X behind. Done with it. Just love TouchID. By the time I buy the next phone, if they don’t have TouchID or a far superior facial recognition system, I will buy a Samsung as my daily driver. TouchID just worked without any pain or hassle. FaceID equals a GREAT FAILURE for Apple. OLED is okay, but the Apple LED displays were always excellent since retina. Animoji is the only thing I will miss, now that’s sad!

TIM COOK RULES!! no.. he actually really sucks.

The Iphone X was suppose to rule the world. Except for SOME DUMB reason he thought the iphone 8 with a 3+ year old form factor would be premium phone, and the ultra premium iphone x would be a hit.

EXCEPT all he did was drive people to andriod phones who have superior screens and form factors (not to mention avoiding Siri!)

I wonder if the board should claw back some stocks for destroying Apple's product line up.
