The crystal ball is kinda foggy since M$ is trying something new (for them): They're not following UI trends that Apple are setting, they're going completely the other way. Only time will tell how committed they are to Metro...

Microsoft went back to the drawing board for their new UI and they are committed to it 100%. Whilst they haven't completed the transition it's already appearing in outlook.com and Office 2013 to varying degrees and I'm sure they'll finish the job. The same as I'm sure Windows 9 will be pure new UI.

It's a big gamble. If it doesn't pay off they'll be in trouble, if it does then Apple will be in trouble as their UI (on the desktop and mobile devices) look archaic in comparison.

I can see it working, I'm already being drawn back to Microsoft after 5 years with Apple.

I don't mind the real world touches.
I think it should be addressed as a theme choice then it's up to the user.

I personally like the real world aesthetic of of iCal and such - adds warmth to cold technology.

what I am starting to get sick of it the grid of icons and folders. it's that that makes me drool over windows 8 use of icons - so much easier on the eyes.

man - I sound like a senior citizen

Personally I think there are times where it works (GarageBand) and times where it doesn't (iCal).

There is a simple, easy, elegant solution to this though.

It's called letting the user choose. It would work something like this in iOS (with the OS X equivalent in similar fashion):

Settings>General>Skeuomorphics>

"Choose from fun real-world analogies like torn paper and leather stitching, or simpler, streamlined interfaces in the following apps:"

*List of apps installed on device that include two graphical themes* *On/Off switch*

Yeah, me too. I like the direction they are going, what's wrong with making things look realistic. The weather app has real looking clouds and the sun, oh no!

No... making it look cool on top of being functional is just ridiculous! I would prefer it if it was grey on grey on grey on grey with no animations. Heck, I think we should do away with the whole interface and only use the terminal, it's functional but without all the extra... "shiny" stuff. lol And cars too! We should get rid of paint on cars, houses OH OH! And the color on our clothes. It's unnecessary.

At this rate I'm going to be spending more time in Windows 8 boot camped and pining for a Surface. The only problem I have is the horrible choice of colour schemes shown thus far.

In an ideal world, everything would be similar to the absolutely stunning Xbox Companion app for iOS. If you havent seen it, there are some screenshots at

http://ipad.appstorm.net/reviews/games/my-xbox-live-control-your-xbox-with-your-ipad/

It is a peerless experience. The white/silver and black colour scheme with a dash of the signature xbox green thrown in, coupled with Metro's clean typographic UI is really something to behold. Thankfully they also seem to have moved away from using the overly large typefaces that made me ultimately dislike Windows 7 on my Lumia 800.

Strangely, the latest Xbox Dashboard beta is looking less and less pretty. The colour balance seems to have been thrown off and it is all looking a bit odd.

Never minded the Skeuomorphism style, games use that plenty. But there is a line between good and bad, the big black flap in Notes app (Edit: I originally wrote Reminders app) on iPad is bad, its just completely useless, it even blocks your view, and for what, to keep paper from falling out? Really??

I side with Forstall. Remember that he's the one who design Aqua. The UI of Mac OS X. It is his spirit that created the Apple UIs everybody love. And it is him that we have iOS. It's all about the whimsicality, the humanity. He has the passion and the diligence(I see that through his keynote demos). And I believe he knows what he's doing and will not go overboard.

Image an alternative universe where Apple UIs are created by another guy.

And as most "inside Apple" stories, it's usually blown up.

whoooossshhhh

Let me link something for you:

BZZZZZT!! WRONGO! There are no metaphors for sexual self-stimulation of the genitals, bud. Look it up yourself.

"There is NO alternate definition"

You don't know how language works, do you?

Let me educate YOU. Ever hear of these things called dictionaries? Encyclopedias? New to you? Apparently so...

People like you THINK they know what words mean and can never point to their own peculiar definition ANYWHERE except in their own wee little mind.

The crystal ball is kinda foggy since M$ is trying something new (for them): They're not following UI trends that Apple are setting, they're going completely the other way. Only time will tell how committed they are to Metro... but they did revamp their logo for the first time since 1987 and it looks like Metro tiles, so I doubt that they'll be backing off from this whole square-simple-streamlined style next year in favor of a skeumorphic UI where you start Windows with a virtual crank.

UI trends that Apple are setting? Can i have some of whatever you are smoking?

Using it on a laptop without touch capability, it is pretty nice. I like how metro (for want of a better name) and the desktop interact; snapping works well with the apps for which it is intended, and I can see the windows store ecosystem really working nicely making metro popular, given that it seems they will be trying to ditch the desktop by windows 10 or w/e.

I was also annoyed with Lion / Mountain Lion and the GUIs as being discussed in this thread - I guess it works in Windows 8 because there's a bigger differentiation; metro can be used more like Dashboard, say, than a built-in app interface ... plus of course metro is really more completely the opposite of Lion's trajectory, as it said in the OP. It will be very interesting to see where this all leads.

I guess it's just a basic difference in opinion. I despise everything about Windows 8. As a long time Mac user I actually liked Windows 7 though.

Forstall has no say over OSX graphics, which is shown. He's iOS only. I don't think anything on iOS is egregious like that is.

The podcast app is. Click on the interface and it reveals, of all things, a spinning magnetic tape as the podcast plays on. What an ugly waste of UI space.

There are ways to create "human/e designs" without resorting to skeu's.

What drives me nuts is changing from month to month in iCal. If forces me to wait for the page to turn. Really annoying when trying to go three months down the road quickly.

I totally agree. That and just the whole faux-paper thing drove me to buy BusyCal, which is awesome. It's what iCal should be. It's like the old iCal on steroids. Can't recommend it enough. Now if only there was a suitable substitute for Address Book/Contacts. I hate the faux-book thing.

Mac OS X should go back to 10.4 Tiger UI and
Windows should go back to Windows XP UI.

XP? By far the ugliest of interfaces the Windows-world has ever seen? The thing you instantly switch back to "classic" after a fresh install? Why on earth should Windows go back to that?

Mate, even a fool is thought wise if he keeps his mouth shut. You're making it worse for yourself!

Have you tried looking up the word 'metaphor' in this dictionary of yours?

What version of OSX are you using though, to me Lion and Mountain Lion look pretty good (only used SL for a week before Lion-up-to-date replacement), pretty much the last of the "lick-able" screen devices were removed -- the blue glassy scrollbar. Pared down, but the whole UI still feels lush to me.

Can't comment on Win8, only saw screenshots, but will be building one to replace my old Windows box, building a PC based on AMD's APUs is pretty cheap. Main work system still the iMac though, one year Mac user, still loving OSX.

I've often felt Garage Band was an excellent example of these so called "skeumorphisms" done well.

Yes. But iCal and Adress Book evoke the certain feeling in my stomach that only stale food (or bad design) brings up in me. It is horrid. I loved the functional and sleek design of iCal in previous versions. This, however, is nothing I feel comfortable to be seen with in public to be honest. I mean - stitching?

If Apple even gave us the option to switch it back. :/

Oh my. Not only do you live on another planet, you also need to work on your grammar. Visual masturbation is metaphorical. A non-metaphorical use is plain bisarr in every way possible.

I beg to differ. Vista Aero takes the ugly interface cake. Microsoft must have actually hired some graphic designers after that, starting with Windows Phone 7.
