Apple Store photography always looks great. If anyone knows the kinds of tricks they use please feel free to post here! Is it just about colour grading and making lines straight?

Hey there! I worked in Apple Retail for a little more than 7 years and I'm a professional photographer. I was there when they took photos of my store for some apple.com content and was able to chat it up with the guy who at the time was part of a small team that was in charge of store photography - not sure if its still this way.

It's all of the usual things - good exposure technique, time of day/lighting and typical architecture photography style with leading lines. but its also in the gear they use to shoot them. I don't have the exact model he used that day but it was a Hasselblad Medium-Format camera. Pretty much all of their cameras have crazy good dynamic range, color reproduction, and sharpness across the whole frame. They aren't cheap. And the lens was crazy expensive too. They use these cameras a lot in marketing and advertising but mainly in print (billboards, magazines, etc,)

Here's a comparable version to the one he was using that day:Hasselblad H6D-100c Medium Format DSLR Camera

Not to mention I'm sure they edit the heck out of them as well.

Composition and lighting! I'd imagine they either shot with the lens at-level with the Apple logos, which are also about the middle of the storefront's facade; that (or a tilt-shift lens) is giving us the clean straight lines of the doors and windows and their frames, as well as the angle it's pointed at the building to give a nice perspective of their store and a taste of the mall it's in.

As far as lighting, I'm sure there was some work done in post, but it looks like early morning (on account that no-one's there). With the lower but still-present light, plus the well-lit interior of the building, allow both to be exposed nice and balanced. And color balanced for the interior lights, since that's the highlight and principle subject of the shot and where they want you to look the most; probably a little warmer in color than true to life, but it makes it look very inviting as a photo.

Amazing to look back and remember this store design. It reminds me of the original Palo Alto, CA store before they changed locations.

The all glass ceiling just lets the sun in enough you feel like you get a suntan some times of the year, its also struggles with air circulation. Because if the sun is streaming down, it's almost to the point you need shades while shopping. :D

The first Apple Store shop in the world dedicated to selling computers and other products made by the Apple company was opened on 19 May 2001, at Tysons Corner in McLean, Virginia, USA. It offered path-breaking lifestyle-focused minimalist design and a Genius Bar customer support facility. The first customer, Chris Barylick, had been queuing for six hours.

Another Apple Store was also opened on 19 May 2001 – in Glendale Galleria in Glendale, California - but owing to time differences this was 3 hours later than the version in Virginia.

Is this from experience in an actual Apple Store? Or are you just thinking about how things usually work? I’ve been in a few all glass Apple stores and never experienced any glare, or issues with heat & humidity... I believe Apple’s Architects engineers, builders, fabricators build knowing how every decision will affect the customer experience, & design & build accordingly. 🍏👀🏗️

Store opened 11/3/2001. I was there.

Sad they're going to renovate it - totally doesn't need it. It's in great shape and has that high-class feel Apple was going for.

If you haven’t been to the new Apple store in downtown LA at the renovated Tower Theatre site, you must go. It is spectacular.

The builders should not include the doors or windows in the refresh, as the owner should already have doors and windows from a previous purchase of a building.

Huh?

(Apple Store) Tice's Corner was never anything BUT an Apple Store. They're the original occupant of that location - the building was built specifically for them.

I mean, I remember when Tice's was an apple FARM, but that's a whole different, delicious story.

From experience in that store previously. It’s been awhile since I’ve visited so perhaps they updated the air conditioning. But It was hot/ bright to use macs on the tables. Because of parking I prefer to use both campus stores now. BTW the cooling was those vents over in the back, those are thick concrete wall each side.

Wow. I used to pop into that store back in the mid-2000's. I was working in NJ on and off and my hotel was right around the corner. I remember one weekday evening driving right past it looking for an Apple store that's supposed to be round here somewhere. It was so "low-key". I parked the car and as I approached I thought it was closed because there was nobody inside. Yep, no crowds at an Apple store! Happy days indeed :)
