This is appealing. Coupled with the luxury of Apple Care, it would be worth a year of commitment.

I think my big compromise in ownership would be no MagSafe.

Can't say I've ever heard that phrase before. I don't personally consider insurance, with a deductible and a max of two claims per year, as a luxury.

They need to get this priced under $2k. I know they want to showcase this as a premium product, but for $2k you can buy an iPhone Pro AND an iPad Pro.
A new base iPhone Pro and a new base iPad Pro (Wi-Fi + cellular) would be $2200. But, in order to use the iPad Pro online on the go you would have to pay monthly for an additional cellular data plan. So, you're going to spend more over time using two separate devices over having an iPhone and iPad Mini in one device.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the opened screen will be almost exactly the same size as an iPad mini. iPhone when it’s closed, iPad when it’s open. Apple has 15 years worth of iPad optimised tablet apps that will run perfectly when it’s opened.
will be cheaper to buy a regular iPhone + the iPad mini xD Seriously. I really don't see the need of this for most people, just like happens with Samsung, and I have the impression many buyers will sell it and upgrade to the 20th anniversary iPhone in 2027 after a year trying this foldable iPhone. Maybe I'm wrong and people change a regular iPhone for this one on a long term, but... I don't think so.

To me it makes sense that two separate devices would be cheaper than the foldable, I’d pay a premium for not having to carry two devices with me to do the same thing as the foldable can do.

And every device doesn’t need to be for most people, most people don’t even need the base iPhone. I think there are enough people that have use of the larger screen being in their pocket for the foldable market to become big enough in the near future.

Yes, you can. But it's 2 separate devices. A singular device will always carry a premium, especially if it's a first version of said device.

Just musing... I can certainly see the attraction of a convertible device. However, two devices have the advantage of redundancy, of course, and can be independently upgraded, as well as being easier to budget for. I also like having devices close to me when I move around the house etc. without having to carry them all the time and not needing to worry about a single battery is also nice when on the move. But I'm usually not carrying more than one device in my pockets when travelling, and sometimes just take one. My wife does keep both a phone and ipad in her handbag, but seems to be firmly in the non-foldable camp. My brother-in-law in contrast loves his foldable :)

Until we get Face ID then it’s a no from me
same. I am very interested in a foldable but if the rumor about no face ID is true that would almost certainly be a deal breaker for me. I moved from and iPad Pro to an iPad Air a few months ago. I didn't think the switch to Touch ID would bother me, but I was SO wrong. miss face ID multiple times a day every day. would not want the same on a phone, it would be an even bigger issue there as I use it more than the ipad.

I'm most interested in the camera compromises. Since this device will definitely be targeted at/most sought after by tech fans who want the latest thing, I wonder if they'll be willing to sacrifice the camera for the form factor. IMO the iPhone Air launch has shown us that they won't sacrifice cameras for thinness.

First Gen of an Apple device is never advisable to pick up. Heck, usually the first three are usually not great. From iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch, AirPods, etc.

Macrumors isn't very good at math. A 5.5" folded display and a 7.8" unfolded display does not translate to a folded phone that looks anything like a "typical iPhone". There are renders that have been done before based on what this looks like, and it is absolutely ghastly. Here it is.

That not too different from the layout of the first Google Pixel Fold…more of a passport size/layout than current skinnier smartphones. Don’t knock it until you try it…better for reachability when both closed or open.

It's unlikely to ever get Face ID because it would require twice the hardware of a bar phone (one for open and one for closed) and quite aside from the cost, the space taken up by 2 sets of hardware would be too much.

Personally I prefer fingerprint anyway, so that woud be a win for me.

My S22 Ultra screen died in a freak drop accident last weekend, and I'm looking for a new phone - this interests me.

The iPhone Air has Face ID and it’s likely not much thicker, if at all, than Apple’s foldable. That being said, I can see Apple omitting it to save costs and pad their margins.

My Pixel 9 Pro Fold has both a fingerprint reader and facial unlock that can be used for authentication in apps and password management so it has to be within Apple’s capabilities.

and what did we learn...Never buy a 1st gen. apple product.

Really try not to. But it have happened.
It really worked out fine with my MacStudio. The earlier iMac was sooo slow at the time, so I jumped the ship and MS has been great.

Bring back the iPhone mini.. My son (26) loves his, yet it old and the lightning port is going bad. Please Apple, update the mini, with a refresh of every 2-3 years. People want it.

Would love a new iPhone mini before a Foldable in mini format (folded) but it will be a bit larger I suspect if it will be an iPad mini unfolded.
An iPhone Flip will be smaller if it will be released, I hope so 🤞🏼

The iPhone Air can have Face ID because of the plateau. They lowered the dynamic island on the air so they can use the extra depth of the plateau for the components.

I've been an Android user for my entire life, but I've been eyeing jumping into the Apple phone system. If this Apple fold device delivers (smooth screen - no ugly crease in the middle) and if it has pencil support, I'd jump all over this and make the switch. I would love a phone and tablet in one that I can take notes on and such. Hopefully, the camera is on par with the iPhone Pro models!
Doubtful on pencil. Goes back to the stylus comment by Jobs

If they do others would follow including Samsung. They have the control to make it happen but depends on the magic number to make it profitable unless the want to make headlines like PlayStation did losing money on a console and making it up with other features/services

It didn’t make money. But yes in some ways this would bring that factor back to those that would want it.
