Why so tiny though. Aspect ratio to make it less square than all the others? My Oppo Find N5 got a 6.6 outer screen and it's just perfect.

I guess there is always something for Gen 3 ...
I was thinking the same when I saw months ago the spec. Hopefully it’s not true or they change it before release but I also started with an iPod Touch back before getting a smartphone which is tiny compared to mini or other phones.

Regardless of the price, the foldable is expected to tap into Apple's loyal fanbase, some of whom will view it as a "must-have device" if its quality meets expectations.
I’m about as loyal as the fanbase gets, and I’m both buying a first gen beta product for $2000-2500, that sounds like a compromised phone. I buy the iPhone Pro for the advanced camera system. Maybe someday especially if the pricing comes more in line with the iPhone Pro (Pro is more likely to increase in price to meet it) but for now it’s a hard pass.

Waiting for Apple’s foldable. If it is going to have only 2 cameras, it will be a disappointment especially when the competition has a zoom/telephoto lens. Think the price will be $1999. Also will not be surprised to see only two colors for a first generation Apple product. The screen dimensions are a bit smaller. Would like a bigger outer screen but everything comes down to the aspect ratio too.

Hot take. Fold phones are a gimmick. I don’t get why Apple is even considering jumping into the foldable phone market. Foldables have been around for six years now, and despite all the hype, they still haven't caught on with the general public. The only people using them are tech enthusiasts and even that crowd seems split.

I don’t see it being successful. First they aren’t cool. They look like modern versions of those flip cases old people use. They scream trying too hard for them too be cool as normal iPhones for younger people. On top of that, there’s a growing trend among younger users to reduce screen time and screens in their lives. They even want dumb phones from the 2000s back. Also too expensive for most people with not many use cases for that price. Watching content on the inner display isn’t noticeably better than watching on a iPhone Max. Its just adds black bezels on top and bottom. The novelty wears off fast. After a few weeks, most people will keep the device closed and just use the outer screen.

Apple trying to enter this space feels more like Tim Cook is desperate for one last one more thing moment. This has VP written all over it. An expensive, overengineered product with a niche audience and no massmarket appeal. Foldables are a dead end and Apple of all companies should know better.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the opened screen will be almost exactly the same size as an iPad mini. iPhone when it’s closed, iPad when it’s open. Apple has 15 years worth of iPad optimised tablet apps that will run perfectly when it’s opened.
THIS!

We will keep hearing, Samsung/Androids have had foldable phones for years. But at the end of the day though, that OS sucks and it's NOT iOS!

With this, I will finally hop on the foldable phone bandwagon. Gladly too.

That not too different from the layout of the first Google Pixel Fold…more of a passport size/layout than current skinnier smartphones. Don’t knock it until you try it…better for reachability when both closed or open.

The iPhone Air has Face ID and it’s likely not much thicker, if at all, than Apple’s foldable. That being said, I can see Apple omitting it to save costs and pad their margins.

My Pixel 9 Pro Fold has both a fingerprint reader and facial unlock that can be used for authentication in apps and password management so it has to be within Apple’s capabilities.
Explain why no other iPhone has anything anywhere near that size, shape or aspect? Because it isn't an ideal size, shape, or aspect. Or it already would. It is a compromise in order to enable the device. That's plenty of reason to knock it.

You already said it...standard smartphones don't also have to open i to a tablet so current designs and aspect ratios are to take the best advantage of space in that form factor.

Giving it the ability to convert into a tablet means other considerations must be made, like size and weight.

If you find that change to much of a compromise when using the device closed, then yes it's not the form factor for you. I personally use my foldable open as much as possible so if that means a battery tablet experience with less size and weight, I'm on board for it.
