My point has always been size + price.
And a new 4.7" iPhone in 2020 will have a similar size + prize advantage compared to the rest of the line-up as the original SE had when it was released. At its point in time, the SE was small and so will be a 4.7" SE 2 in 2020.

When will they realize it's not about the cost, it's about the size? Not everyone wants to drag a huge phablet with them at all times. I'd love a small compact phone I can carry around with me. And don't talk to me about Apple Watch (cellular), the screen is too tiny and hard to use for anyone over 30. I was looking for a phone for my parents (both retired). Offered them my iPhone 6 - they said thanks but no thanks, that was way too big for them. Gave my mother my old SE, she loved it. My father will probably get an android device or something because I can't find SE in decent shape anywhere and he refuses to use anything larger. Hell, I'd buy one in a heartbeat even though half the time I use either my iPad Mini or my X. Not touching those plus-sized monsters.

I was thinking, so if the SE2 is a spiced up 8, will it be priced higher than 8? I mean if 8 replaces 7 as the entry-level iPhone it will be pretty cheap, right? Would make more sense to just buy the 8 then if they're the same size.

Don't they see the appeal of the SE is THE SIZE and not the price?!?!?
For you, sure. So are you 10% of SE demand? 30%? 70%? We don’t know—but Apple does. And for a significant number of users, their phone is their only computer. They do not want a 4.0” screen; on the contrary, the bigger the better.

Sure, some like the SE because of size, but even if you combine both groups (price and size) it still doesn’t add up to a sufficiently large demand to warrant being manufactured. It’s no different in the Android world.

People who like the SE never like to hear that, but that’s the reality. If there were enough demand, on the iOS or Android platform, one of the dozens and dozens of phone manufacturers would make them. But they simply don’t/won’t sell well enough to be profitable. You can’t always get what you want, even when you’re willing to pay for it.

I think it's supposed to replace the current 8 / 8 Plus in March 2020. 8 Plus will be discontinued and the refreshed 8 with the A13 chip will be cheaper by then. It should be cheaper than the current 599$. Because the 8 is still an amazing choice for people.

I'm about to upgrade so I guess its best to wait for March 2020 then. But thats still around 6 months which is a lot of time...

Which phone you currently have? I would just hang onto it, maybe replace the battery if you need to and then wait, if the 8 appeals to you why not? Otherwise the iPhone 8 isn't a bad choice even with the A11 which has more than enough power this and next year no doubt. Probably even after that.

I assume that Apple will also keep the 8 / 8 Plus in the line-up (until 03/2020) and they will be a bit cheaper after the keynote tomorrow.

I currently have the 6s. Do you think the difference between A11 and A13 is worth a 6 month wait? 8 is still pretty good, has wireless charging and stuff

Let’s hope you’re right.

I question your premise. I think the profit was too low so they dropped it. It was more popular than you think. People hung onto their 5, 5s, 6, 6s, and SEs making it look like it wasn’t popular. Eventually those people will need to replace. If they drop the 7 and 8 without offering something smallish and reasonable ($400ish) these people will go to google.

For me, the SE has been ideal because it's the perfect size for the pocket of my running shorts and the pocket of my running vest.

It's not the right size "because everything else is bigger" - it's the right size because it fits those pockets.

If the new phone is bigger than the SE such that it doesn't fit into those pockets, I will have to put some serious consideration into it.

8 and 8 Plus are amazing. The A11 is amazing too. Plenty fast. Has an amazing performance it will last you years. I absolutely love my 8 Plus, it was so worth it getting one and finally replacing my old 6s.

If you really need a new one as soon as possible, get the iPhone 8 now. Or, wait another day, they should be cheaper by tomorrow. The thing is that it's just a rumor at the moment. We don't know exactly what Apple is doing. Apple could even remove the 8 and 8 Plus after tomorrow's keynote, but there are third-party sellers as usual. But that's unlikely.

I understand that you want a new phone by now because i also had a 6s for 3 years and i really needed a new phone end of last year. Battery was flat, screen already had a third-party replacement (it was a low-quality one) and in general the camera also lacked in quality. So i just got a 8 Plus last year in December and i never looked back to the 6s.

I'd say go for it.

The newly rumored updated 8 does not excite me in the least. I was planning to update my 8 in November of 2018 which I passed on. After having an iPhone 6, 6S, and now an 8 ..buying something the exact size and build doesn’t make me want to bother at all. Something between the size of the SE and an 8 would be ideal to me. Apple, this is truly depressing.

For me, the 4.7" phones strike just the right balance between screen size and one-handed use (w/ Reachability).

Now, I prefer the SE form factor, so a 4.7" screen in a SE sized phone would be perfect.
So rumor has it it's going to be based on the iPhone 8 but I don't really see that happening since 8 was based on 6 and that's a 5-year-old design at this point. It's fine to recycle a design but not for that long which makes me think anything they release from now onwards must be based on the iPhone X at least.

Wishful thinking but 4.7 screen squezzed into SE form makes most sense, IMO.

I’d buy that in a heartbeat.
Thats what I'm thinking because iPhone 8 full screen without bezels would just be iPhone X so it doesnt make sense.

X design in 4 or 4.2' body would sell very well priced at around $499, I think.

I decided to hold out a little longer. iPhone 8 is at $599 where I live so it doesnt make sense really, if it was at $449 i'd probably get it though. See what happens, maybe they release a smaller device, who knows. I'll be on the lookout.

This isn't going to be a full screen phone. This will be exactly what it's rumored to be: an iPhone 8 clone for those who are scared of Face ID and are still crying about lack of a home button.

You won’t find any androids at SE size. Hell you won’t find any at 4.7 either. Most androids are bigger than even the 11 Max.

It wouldn’t be bezeless though would it. The notch would take up the whole top part of the screen. So for symmetry it would need an equivalent chin. Then it doesn’t become a bezeless phone anymore and not vastly different from an iPhone 8.

I think it's supposed to be an entry-level iPhone for those who want a cheap iPhone (300 - 400 $ new) or who want a compact phone. Apple sees the 4" SE-style as outdated and they want to replace the SE with the iPhone 8 (128 GB storage got already introduced). Problem is that the SE-lovers refuse to get the 4.7" iPhone 6s/7/8 simply because they see those phones as "too big".

Because it's an outdated form factor. Honestly the 4.7" iPhone 6 / 6s / 7 / 8 isn't that much bigger. Still very compact and you can use it one-handed.

Only it's not outdated because Apple just re-released a new 7th gen iPod Touch this year with the exact same screen. So developers are still going to be expected to support it for the next few years, at least.

I understand how you could think that 4.7" isn't much bigger than 4", but remember it's measured on the diagonal — and all the 6/6s/7/8 phones have a thick bezel around that larger display, making it much too big for comfortable one-handed use...you have to do the dreadfully one-hand-shimmy up and down the phone to reach the full screen. I "upgraded" from a 6 to an SE solely because I didn't like the size of the 6. Perhaps a 4.7" screen would be manageable for one-handed use *if* it had no bezels, but Apple has yet to release a form factor like that.
