The one issue with your point is that even a 5.5 16:9 screen is longer - too large to use single-handedly, and that's a large part of the appeal of the SE.
Same is true for 4.7” 16:9, at least for me.

My 5s, I could use one-handed. 6s, sometimes but not all the time. My thumb won’t reach from bottom left to top right without changing my grip.

Apple isn’t going to spend loads on R and D to design an entirely new device for a small segment of people. Not something Apple would ever do.

It’ll end up being an iPhone 8 like device most likely.
What they will do and what I want are two totally different things. I’m well, well aware.

An SE needs to be 4.0. The new iPod has the perfect body for an SE2. I’ll keep my SE forever, why apple thinks these bigger phone are wanted is beyond me. My small hands just hate the larger phones and I don’t care about price, I want SMALL!!!

I would ditch my Xs in a heartbeat if they built an iPhone X-style around a 4.7” display. Yeah, notch right into that 16x9 1344x750 lcd and round the corners. Such a wee device would totally placate the SE crowd and make for a somewhat straighter line transition for those coming from 6, 7, or 8 iPhones what with the same size screen and all. I don’t care for these crazy tall aspect ratio phones. The X style always should have been about losing the chin and forehead, not filling them in (on iPhones anyhow, bigger display, same size body concept for iPads is peachy).

Having said what I want, here's what we'll probably get- an iPhone 6,7,8 body with the chin and forehead filled in with more display (save the notch natch). Which would put the display right about 5.5" which is apparently another size that's been rumored about. So iPhone 11 in small and medium, and iPhone 11 Pro in medium and large. Or maybe append mini and max on the far ends of the size spectrum. Seems a reasonable spread of phone sizes, although I'd still pine for smaller. I have entirely too many thought processes wrapped up in this speculating.

Great if this actually happens.

Why? I think the draw for most people to this phone was the size and now it’s similar to the size xs and probably won’t be much cheaper XR.

Maybe the niche market for a phone the size of the SE isn’t the same anymore but even if it was smack dab in the middle at about 4.3 inches that would have been about the perfect size for the smallest iPhone.

I think SE isn't that specific 5SE type of phone anymore. When it's the time to drop the iPhone 8, it will become the label for the budget Home Button iPhone in the FaceID era.

But why does anyone need that?

There has been an unusually large amount of FUD spread by MacRumors and other media about products speculated to be released by Apple in 2020.

The intention of this all this fear, uncertainty, and doubt is surely to disrupt sales of Apple's 2019 products.

This is a good sign in my book - - the haters are running scared.

Apple's "low cost" phones are still expensive for the general populace. It's a wait and watch game, we've all been speculating of the second coming of iPhone SE since dog years. I'm surprised at how many people still love the SE form factor, though I have honestly moved onto the 6-8 form factor and find it perfect.

Yes, i also hope for a smaller phone that can be used with one hand, as Jobs insisted on. I don't really care if it is "cheap" or not as long as it is small

finally .. make the budget phone with fingerprint reader and im sold :)

I don't need latest greatest camera bs

I never really cared whether it was low cost, my preference was always a small phone that would fit in my pocket.
Can't wait for this to happen. Still on my third (!!) iPhone 6s and iPhone 5c.

I hate the bigger phones. I need to use my phone comfortably with one hand.
An iPhone XS in the size of an SE (ideally with the shell of the 5C which I love hahah) would be amazing.

I never really cared whether it was low cost, my preference was always a small phone that would fit in my pocket.
This is what got me. I needed a small phone because I run a lot and don't want to carry anything bulky.

As it turned out the SE was affordable as well as being the ideal size. I was sold.

As a consequence of this affordability and the ideal size, Apple have kind of "trapped" me - in a good way. I would not have bought an Apple Watch if I hadn't bought the iPhone SE and it's very doubtful if I'd have bothered replacing my iPad mini 2 with the iPad mini 5.

I'm happy with my growing range of Apple products but, if not for the SE, I wouldn't have bought any and would still be faffing about with Android phones, no smart watch, and an increasingly outdated iPad.

So they've made more sales with me *because* of the affordability and size of the SE than they would have had without it.

That’s an iPhone 6/7/8. Not an SE.

How difficult is it to simply make an SE with an edge-to-edge screen?

Apple’s entire phone lineup needs to be updated and all bezel-free.
And the iPhone SE is an iPhone 5/5s, not an SE. What's your point again?

Exactly. With a edge-to-edge display you can still get a good-sized screen out of a 4” device. Why hasn’t Apple done this?
Well some SE fans like the 4.0” size and they don’t want a bigger screen. Some want a 4.7” screen in the SE form factor. Some want a low-cost device, as will reportedly be introduced. Others would gladly pay $899 for an X-type, SE-sized phone.

It’s not one size fits all, it’s more like each of those four subgroups is 3%, but even if they all wanted the exact same phone, the total still wouldn’t add up to a good-enough selling model.

As a slightly smaller XR, $649 would seem about right. But this is basically an iPhone 7s, with a newer SoC. There’s no FaceID or dual rear cameras.

Expect the iPhone 7 to be discontinued and this new phone to be around $449, maybe the 8 drops to $549 in March. XR, XS and XS Max discontinued for iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.

The XR is basically a compressed XS-Max. Apple could do a compressed XS. The XS is quite long but not very wide, so this would be reasonably small and fit for smaller hands.
