Apple's First New Low-Cost iPhone Since the iPhone SE Expected to Launch Early Next Year

I don't think that a higer res screen is something that the target market for this phone cares about, as evidenced by the strong sales of the XR.
There are other things that are more important to potential buyers, like batterylife and price.
I'd prefer the XS-Max screen resolution to the XR.
But I'd prefer more having about $300 stay in my pocket.

I wonder how many people can see the difference.

I wonder how low cost it’ll be by the spring when the 30% tariffs have kicked in?
Whatever tariff is on the import price.

You pay for (cost of parts, manufacturing and shipping to your country), plus (development cost), plus (cost of sales like advertising, stores, store employees), plus profit. Tarrifs are only on the first part, and only in the USA. Anything sold in Europe, Japan, China, India, Australia, should never touch US ground and therefore should not attract any tariffs.

Form factor. Surely you can tell the difference between a SE/5/5s and a 6/7/8?
Then why do you refer to it only as the SE and not the 5/5s/SE? For the 4.7" iPhones you seem to go out of your way to always refer to the complete group to describe the form factor. It is almost as if the form factor is only one of the aspects and that other characteristics that are unique to the SE also define the appeal of the SE to you.

Yeah, the SE is a 4" phone. But it isn't the only 4" iPhone, nor is having a 4" screen its only key characteristics. It's other key characteristics are that it uses older hardware (than other iPhones sold as new concurrently) in a lot of regards and that it, at release time, was the clearly cheapest way to get an iPhone with an up-to-date system-on-a-chip.

If all you want is a 4" iPhone, maybe you say exactly this instead of saying you want a new SE, because as I described above, the SE stands for more than just being a 4" iPhone.

Simple. Because they had to. It's because of iOS 13. Apple doesn't care about the iPod touch anymore. Neither do they focus on it. But Apple doesn't want to fully discontinue it yet. It somehow still sells. I mean, it's a great music player for the car or for the gym or for the kids. Also it's the cheapest iOS device you can get and some iOS developers use it to test their apps (if they otherwise use an Android phone).
The same reasoning holds true for a 4“ phone. It‘d be a great phone (in the sense of being a phone), it‘d be a great music player, and a solid testing device. And it would sell. A lot more than the iPod touch.

It'll be a repackaged iPhone 8, which was pretty much what the SE was, a last gen design with some updated internals.
This is my takeaway from rumors over the last couple of months as well (there’s been previous rumors about an updated iPhone 8 in early 2020.

As I see it, the iPhone SE was - and still is for many, apparently - two things in one:
1. A moderately updated previous-generation iPhone at a relatively low price, making it a „value“ proposition and potentially more attractive product in price-sensitive developing markets
2. A decently specced small form-factor iPhone

I think low sales of the SE are a misconception, and there’s big enough a market for both eventually.
Though not necessarily in one single product:

1. The majority of customers don‘t want a small-screen phone. Many won’t be considering a 4“ phone. even if it’s a relatively affordable iPhone and good value proposition. And that’s also true for developing economies. There‘s enough competition from affordable Android phones that make the iPhone SE screen look downright tiny. This is what I believe Apple is going to address, that the rumors point to: Release of a „value“ iPhone in iPhone 8 form factor in 2020.
2. I think there’s big enough a market for a „small“ iPhone - one that enough people would be willing to pay „more“ for than just entry-level pricing. Though if and when such a product might be released will remain a matter of speculation for the time being. I wouldn’t hold my breath for it (yet).

Not if they manage to fit those 4,7” screens into the chassis similar to iPhone 5, 5S and SE. ;).

The rumor suggest it will look like the 8 with large bezels to keep cost down. that’s the new small phone.

The size of the new model will be similar to the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 that was introduced in 2017, three sources said

The dumb thing about these prices is that they may actually make more money by reducing them.

Back in the sun-£1000 days, I’d upgrade every year. As would many others I knew. At these prices though I’m keeping my X as long as possible!

The hardware side is only one aspect of this. There is also the question what percentage of software will (still) be designed to work decently on a 4" screen.

Is it physically possible to fit a 4.7" display in an SE body? I have the 4S, and now the 8 and 8 Plus, I feel that the 8 is almost there for one handed use, minus the chin and the weight, as there's really nothing out there like the weight and in and feel of the SE I find. Not exactly sure if I can handle a 4" display again though.

They aren't going to put any of the Face ID tech in a low cost phone.

I think that there are many people who would pay a high price for an premium device.

I hope Apple makes another small phone for everyone who wants one. But as the article says... it'll probably be based on the iPhone 8... not the SE...

It's amazing how tiny the SE is compared to the rest of the family. I'm talking about physical size. It's very small. Apple hasn't crammed new internal components into a body that small in quite a while!

I'd buy even if this costs a bit extra. Smaller phones are great for those of us who still tote a laptop around everywhere. I don't need my phone to do it all. I want it to be an easier to carry accessory.

If they make a 5.5" or 4.7" without the huge bezels we would still get a pocket friendly phone suitable for 1 handed use. I'm sure they have plenty of 4.7 and 5.5 screens laying around :)

I wanted an SE2 all this time but honestly aesthetically 8 is drop dead gorgeous and 4'7 is quite a bit already but not tragic, still very manageable. Always could be worse, they may decide to never make a <5inch phone again...

Good idea! But I'm not sure Apple wants to keep making 16x9 screens... and make two new models for what is supposedly their lower-cost options.

I like it though. :)

My idea is to take the iPhone SE and call it "iPhone Classic" and keep it updated with a decent processor and compatible camera.

I think that's what people want... just update the damn SE!

I agree that Apple should offer consumers the choice of a smaller and more practical-sized phone.

But I’m always surprised how large phones have become. It’s as if the next release will be a retro Motorola brick phone.

I don’t need to a larger screen. I can watch videos, read and type perfectly well using my SE.

I love the form factor of my SE, it’s basically perfect.

That being said..

Apps and websites have changed a lot since Apple went from 3.5" to 4".
Back then you got the premium experience with a 4" but today you get an ok-ish experience at best.
A switch to a larger screen while still keeping the over all size of the device would deliver a much better experience.

But if cost is all that matters then they will most likely not make a completely new device..

I'm afraid most people actually want larger phones. Which is so dumb since that's what tablets and laptops are for. I would to think the market for a 4'2 inch phone was big but it most likely isn't and Apple is well aware of that... Just look at Android, they're virtually making no phones under 5 inches.

Just googled "best small android phone 2019" and they're listing 5.5inch phones mostly. Am I crazy or has the world gone mad?

So is gonna look like eh iPhone 8 not the SE ? Anyways 2020 iPhone is gonna be smaller than the XS models so that’s perfect size for me
