Then you’ve never deul booted before, which requires a full restart to enter a different operating system via the bios or boot menu

You might be talking about virtual machines but those come with inherent performance penalties
There has to be a way to get macOS to sit alongside iPadOS, maybe a "lite" version of macOS that, when swiped over, or with some other gesture or keyboard input, allows you to get the desktop experience without the need for a reboot.

You could simply have a virtual desktop. It doesn't need to be full fledged macOS. It just reduces the restricting feeling of file management to an app that takes up the entire screen with files. Remove the iPhone vibe.
If only Apple didn’t explicitly restrict hypervisor usage in their App Store Guidelines

With it now reaching 14in and with all the power it has kinda would want it to be able to act both as a Tablet when wanted and function more like a computer when wanted.

14" ipad seems like a lot to hold in the hand. Book your physio appt for your shoulders if you plan on holding this thing in your hand most of the time.

Even the 11" pro isn't easy to hold on to for long periods of time IMO.
Pretty sure these are gonna be positioned in the market as a second display for MacBooks or as a stationary media consumption device. Even the 12.9” sits on most peoples desk full time.

An actual desktop that isn't a blown up iPhone for one Home Screen for one, where files/folders can be placed directly on it for an extra layer of file management that is tied to the iCloud Drive just like a Mac. A finder that searches for keywords within files and not just file names. Those would be helpful starts.
An actual file system, please, pretty please….

Was going to say, I usually see older people using them as cameras.

Personally, I find them handy for listing things on eBay.
I use mine for research and study. They are perfect for this. I make notes, sketch, read textbooks, articles and papers, all in a thing that’s the size of a best seller book. And super lightweight. Best thing I bought in years. 11” iPad Pro.

It’s quick to say, :) but then when you consider what would actually need to be done to make it happen (one huge hurdle is developers needing to handle the modal change… when they already don’t take the relatively simple steps to port their iPad apps to the Mac!) you end up with a loooong list of “nope”s. Plus, macOS is one of the least popular OS’s in the world, a distant last compared to Android, Windows and iPadOS/iOS. Thinking of it that way, they’d be adding an OS that few would want, meaning it wouldn’t be a selling point.

Kudos to you sir. You are using your iPad the right way. I could never find a real use case for my 2018 12.9 iPP other than sidecar for dual screen work and having a television next to my MacBook Pro when I’d have YouTube tv / mlb.tv running on it. Ended up selling it because why do I have a $1200 12” television?

Who takes pictures with their iPad?
Anybody using it for work related stuff I guess. When I want to show a quick modification to be done on a work site. I take a picture, anotate and send it over.
The same can be done in the fashion industry if someone receives a collection of clothes and wants them to be tweaked a little bit before the release. Take a picture and send it over

One thing i really hope they add to the iPad is waterproofness. When i’m outside taking notes to bid on a new project and it rains, paper becomes a mess and the iPad is not currently waterproof

Also if someone wants to watch a movie in the bathtub? Waterproof iPad to the rescue.

Anyway i’m weird and probably don’t have the same needs as everyone here 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sounds like dual booting to me...
There’s no reason to actually dual boot though, they’re both the same OS under the hood, it just (“just” in this context, not minimizing the work needed) needs to switch to MacOS userland tools and gui when docked and to iPadOS gui and userland when not - no need to reboot to a completely new kernel and OS

So stubborn to bring back Touch ID?.
i still find Face ID much more ineficient (I have to move my whole body or the whole tablet or the whole phone when Touch ID was faster and required less effort and had waaaaaay less incorrect positives (brothers and siblings unlocking Face ID, but no one accessed Touch ID).
Why other tablet makers have Oled displays since forever and Apple can’t?. Is to too expensive for Apple?, it’s devices are more expensive than the competition!. I hope soon Apple looses its dominant position in order for it to focus more on customers than on just making the investors happy.

Which iPad are you using? I could imagine that you wouldn’t need to hover over your iPad too much with an iPP with central stage

Apple is planning a range of transformative upgrades for the iPad lineup in the coming years, including a new 14.1-inch model and an 11-inch model with an OLED display, as well as the introduction of under-screen camera technology and foldable displays, according to reliable display analyst Ross Young.

iPad-Pro-Big-Ol-Logo-Orange.jpg

The comments, made on the latest episode of The MacRumors Show, provide insights into Apple's future plans for the iPad. Among the key new details is the fact that Young no longer believes that the 14.1-inch iPad rumored to launch early next year will feature mini-LED technology, with the display effectively being the same LCD that is in the current iPad Air. He added that he is seeking further confirmation from suppliers about the larger device.

Young believes that the 11-inch iPad Pro will stick with its current display technology in the immediate future, with Apple having no plans to upgrade it to a mini-LED display or "Liquid Retina XDR" like the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The company is instead said to be waiting for the jump to OLED displays, which is scheduled to occur for both the 11-inch and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro simultaneously in 2024. Young said that Apple expects the OLED 11-inch iPad Pro to sell in considerably higher volumes than the OLED 12.9-inch iPad Pro during their launch year.

Young thinks that Apple's under-display TrueDepth camera could come to the iPad before it comes to the iPhone, with the technology being easier to introduce underneath a larger display with lower pixels per inch. The implementation is also said to be more feasible because the iPad is manufactured in lower volume than the iPhone. He added that this new feature could theoretically emerge as soon as next year, well ahead of when the technology is expected to appear on the iPhone.

In addition, Young claimed that obtaining a sufficient volume of cover glass has been a key limiting factor in Apple's failure to bring a foldable iPhone to market so far. The company is not expected to face such problems with a larger foldable iPad or MacBook, hence why a bigger Apple foldable device could also come to market before a foldable iPhone.

When the iPad can use apps like Final Draft, Final Cut, etc in an indistinguishable way from the desktop counterpart, I will be happy.

14 inch and no mini LED? Does not make sense. For the people wanting an iPad for their "XDR workflow", a 14 inch screen are likely very useful.

I see the "I want the iPad to be a Mac" crowd has woken up. Tip: goto apple.com. Press "Mac" in the menu bar. There are some awfully nice Macs there to choose from.

Who takes pictures with their iPad?
Tens of thousands of iPad users take photos with their iPad! Especially with the most recent iPad Mini.
One just has to look at important functions etc, and whilst one used to see just phones taking pictures etc, now iPads and other tablets are in full use- at least here in Europe.
Plus our daughter-in-law has an iPad Mini 6gen and weekly sends us literally dozens of photos made/sent with her iPad. The quality is truly stunning and recently during a visit I had the chance to really test it out. If you're interested in photography but never tried taking photos with a recent iPad Mini - you're doing yourself an injustice.
We're talking taking pictures here: no doubt that those more interested in typing and multitasking wouldn't get on too well with the iPad Mini!

I scan with my often. But this seems to be more about underscreen faceID. In which case, everyone who uses an iPad.

Sounds like you may be better placed using a mac for now.

You don’t know what a files system is if you think the iPad either doesn’t have one or has no access to one.

Boring. Non of the announced changes is something new. Foldable iPad, something integrated, something OLED.

I still own a 2018 iPad Pro. It is still awesome and fast and I haven‘t thought a second about replacing it with a new generation model since 2018. If it breaks someday, ok.

It’s starting to show its age now, Photoshop can’t run certain tasks due to a lack of ram - for example. It’s a fine machine but it’s not good enough for certain things anymore, depending on what you want to do.

I do. I carry iPad Pro with me whenever possible. iPhone screen too small for most things. (Yes, even the Max size)
None of this matters without improvements to iPadOS. the M1 iPad is already an absolute HORSE. Camera improvements are at the bottom of iPad users most wanted lists. Foldable displays just aren't ready.
Or Apple can just write unoptimised code to eat away those performance headrooms. Easier jobs for those devs since they spend less time optimizing.
Even the 11" pro isn't easy to hold on to for long periods of time IMO.
As someone who holds 11" iPad Pro playing games a lot of the time, I can attest this.
I just think it is dumb that Apple is just replicating their work from 20 years ago for the iPad, when, they could easily just allow dual booting....
It's just Apple's ongoing struggle to avoid merging macOS and iPadOS while trying to reinvent all the wheels that exist on desktop while getting away as few of those "reinvented wheels" as possible. Basically, merging without saying they are merging.
