'oh they just work'... but y'all have been cringing and shouting abt the dud ANC broken after a firmware update. smh
Bose literally has the same issue with ANC, except they don't plan on fixing it. And before you whine "but that's wireless headphones", you can plugin via audio cable too.
smh

I love my AirPods. I'm surprised that in 2020 so many still talk about wires like it's their security blanket. I don't see those people in real life because even the people I know buying cheap headphones are buying Bluetooth.

To me, this is just strange, but I guess I’m not a massive one for status symbols, I find that rather petty.
If that’s the perception you get whenever you see AirPods – that is you and yours alone.

While other people simply see headphones, you experience emotions of a type jealousy, or is it disdain for others whom want a quality product?

Not everyone gets upset and gets defensive whenever they see someone with a nice phone, nice car, nice house, or nice earbuds.

Not saying you are one - but it’s always the Apple haters who are more obsessed with Apple vs Apple fans. They go through so much effort to downplay a product they never used.

Imagine that! You strip people of their ability to use one type of product and instead force them to use another type of product.
Let's not confuse trapping people into one type of product and then marketing the heck out of your version of it with "being right."
Apple is not "forcing" or "trapping" anyone into anything. There's plenty of products on the market. Apple is far from a monopoly.

They do, as Bluetooth is a standard.
But none of them just work like other Apple products. Just bring your case near your phone and bam pair and ready to go. Then you can easily just bring them up near your iPad or Mac (with an app) and they are paired and good to go.

Other headphones are just much less convienent and most consumers don’t know many brand names or trust them.

Not many people are prosumer. Most just buy something on the expectation it will just work and be done with it, and they like to buy as much as they can from a brand they know and trust.
Having access to private binaries is def an advantage.

Exactly. While many flagship phones have moved on from wired headphones you can still find some. It's up to you as a consumer to buy what you want with your money. No one can legally force you to buy anything. At least not in my country but perhaps it's different in other places.

I have had the original AirPods since they were first sold and have found them to be wonderfully useful, so I bought AirPods Pro a few months ago, and while they work well, as far as noise cancellation and such, they do not fit anywhere close to as well as the originals. APP’s just barely sit in my ear and fall out far of my ears or feel like they’re about to do so, before I poke them back in, while the original AP never once fell out of my ears.

My take is the center of gravity of APP’s is much closer to the tipping point of my ear, so when they get the least bit loose, kerplunk they go. I know Apple can’t have APP’s fit every ear, but it has been disappointing they are so much more likely to fall out than AP’s. I’m looking at ‘hacking’ the silicone tips, a la Frederico Viticci, to see if I can make them work better for me.

If you're going with "just works" as an argument, you need to look at what it's replacing. Headphones are plug it in and put it on your ear. That's just working. I don't care how nice your Airpods are - they don't achieve that level of simplicity. The only mild annoyance of wired headphones is that maybe the wire is sometimes tangled, but organizing better prevented that and nobody takes more than a minute to untangle them (and you could just use them tangled if you didn't care.)

The prices Apple charges for headphones are dumb. I'm disappointed in people for buying them.
My original AirPods couldn't get through a 30 minute conversation with my mom today due to battery degradation. wired, no issue.

Sadly many people have envy of other's success or belongings. I look at a nice sports car and think wow that's nice and not some jealous thought. I don't see how someone could be jealous or envious of headphones though. Maybe AirPods with diamonds?

It sounds like your AirPods are defective or worn out. Maybe take them back to the Apple store if they're still relatively new or get a new pair if they're old. I don't have any issues with mine like this.

I write mobile iOS apps for a living. My phone is an Xs and my iPad is the original 12.9 --- there's just no reason to upgrade every doggone year at the prices Timmy is charging.
I didn't know there was a reason to upgrade every year before. If your current phone works and makes you happy then keep it. Apple actually encourages people to keep their old devices longer because it's better for the environment.

I have a price sensitive friend that went with $100 Samsung rather than Apple or cheaper $49 earpods. Is Samsung pretty high quality?
I have a friend that likes his Samsung earbuds. He got them free with his Samsung phone for a promotional thing. There's also many other earbuds made out there that seem pretty decent. Buy them from a place like Walmart (If you live in the USA) that will accept returns just in case. I like the non pro AirPods because of how they go in my ears and I can hear what's going on around me. You can get AirPods on sale sometimes for $129 I think. I don't see the point of buying something that's a little cheaper just to save money but I understand everyone has a budget.

Not 100% accurate. Typically if you write software for the devices you need to own the latest and greatest. For instance, I can't do any LIDAR work without the new iPad.

I am on my second pair of airpods.
moderate to heavy use will give you about 1 and 3 months before the battery starts to become bad.
A product like airpods is a 1000% profit device... that is why you see every brand with a name selling headphones.
I dont understand why the do not make a screw mount at the top of the cylinder to change batteries?
It is a use and throw away product and same goes for the case. In times like these it is a serious elbow deep fist for the consumers and the environmen.
Look at the xiaomi airdots they are about 1/10 the price of airpods...and the sound quality is same “just okay”
there is no expensive components in the airpods... it is cheaper for apple to throw away than to open and replace a component like battery.
Lucky i live in a country with 2 year warranty as standard so i am just going to keep replacing mine.. like a service you pay the 1000% profit price and get them replaced every 1 1/2 year.
I own 3 pairs of wireless sennheiser on the side, a qc35, various in ear wireless brands... and the all are much faster to connect tomy apple devices.. with airpods i always end up in the bluetooth menu

"It was almost like wildfire..." "except we had these headphones around since the iPod. So like a.. multi-decade wildfire approach. It's great. Gosh, we're so innovative."

Apple once again, made a controversial move that proved being right in the long run.
Controversial to us but extremely calculated and planned well in advance by them. By forcing into people the need to get BT headphones. This was as they had just acquired beats and were about ready to launch their AirPods. Extremely greedy and jerk move on their part. The worst is that they weren’t honest about it and said they needed to ditch the headphone jack because of waterproofing. No it was for them to rack in billions more with their products.

What I like about AirPods: quick & easy to recharge, no need to attach them to a charging cable throughout the day and if they run dead, you can just pop them into the case and do something for a short while and they’ll have a decent charge again.

Small & easy to carry around in pocket.

What I don’t like about AirPods: They can get really finicky when switching devices, switching to iPhone requires opening control panel, hitting that tiny little triangle, and hoping they show up in the list.

They can only hook up to one device at a time. I loved dual headphones, so I could be watching Apple TV and if a call comes in, they’re already hooked up. Wish AirPods could do this, but instead I have to yell, “Hold on! Hold on! I’m attaching my headphones!” And then wait for them to switch.

Yes, very greedy of them... to sell a phone without a headphone jack and letting people spend their money on it. They should’ve told people to buy a different phone.

I’ll give him the custom H1 chip, but different size ear tips have been around and offered by other manufacturers for years.

They are not all awesome nor are all made the same or equal. I expect them to pair, work and last a while and use them to listen to various media. That’s it; thus I have different pairs for different use cases. The AirPods excel at what I need and clearly satisfy many others also.

mum asking why it’s satisfying, that’s all.

Perhaps you missed the part where I said that I had AirPods. People are suggesting that it’s a status symbol, I’m anything but jealous. If I were I’d have them or be flaunting around my own status in vain hopes.

i am just asking, given the plethora of options out there, what makes these so special

If they studied so many ears to make the perfect one size fit all AirPod, why don’t AirPods stay in the year while working out? Please get the AirPod pro instead

See above. You don't have to be a monopoly to exert absurdly large commercial forces. In this case, removing functionality created a huge market opportunity for them in high margin accessories. That opportunity wouldn't have existed otherwise.

We can go down the semantics of "forcing" and "trapping" all day. A combination of:
  • making an old option really inconvenient (the adapter is painful as noted previously)
  • effectively requiring most people to use a new option
  • creating your own new option in this market you just created
  • marketing it aggressively while pricing it at 60% margins because you exert brand power
is what I think many would call a very effective business strategy. I'd agree.

BUT: I'd also call it crappy coming from the company that was the voice of user focused design and usability for so very long.
