It's ironic and funny to hear complaints about Siri not working, from people wanting to use a virtual assistant to keep them from actually doing the work involved with a task.

I Actually use Siri all the time. Even though it does have its downfalls, it does have consistency with dictation, and deciphering is usually accurate for the most part. But overall, I'm not that displeased with Siri overall.
Have you noticed any recent improvements of any kind with Siri? I just asked her in plain ordinary English to calculate a tip for me. Siri has always been good at doing calculations for me, but I would have to ask very carefully and not throw in vague prepositions.

I just told Siri: "My check is for four hundred eighty two dollars and fifteen cents. What is the twenty percent tip on that?

I got this, and she also read it aloud for me:

I guess I don't need a tip calculator app anymore. I was impressed she transcribed the amount correctly and that she understood what I meant by a 20% tip on "THAT". I've always been more specific and careful about wording requests for calculations. The way I worded the request this time was closer to my normal speech.

She still had some incredibly daft moments as recently as last week. I asked her who the CEO of Apple was and she couldn't answer at first. I asked the same question a second time after asking Alexa and Google Assistant and Siri finally came up with the answer. Weird.

Today she's handling Tim Cook queries like a champ. :)

And by the way I just ate leftovers for lunch so no, I am not picking up a $482.15 lunch tab.

People can't understand what it means Apple's care for privacy.

What do you think it means?

The only reason I would prefer that my associated info not be stored, is if I'm doing something that will result in a government request for my stored data.

But if I were up to such things, then I would not be using any internet (OR PHONE!) services whatsoever. Apple and Google are the least of my worries, because at least they have lawyers who will review the request, and they have plenty of reasons to keep our data private.

There are a lot of other data collectors who are more than happy to sell our personal data.

People really focus on the wrong parties. Of course, that's Apple's intention when they make such public speeches.

If only Siri actually worked.
Yes, it has been a bit of a disappointment so far but with some of the statements coming from top execs recently, I am optimistic that much better functionality is coming our way soon, and I'm appreciative of Apple's commitment to privacy which apparently has been the stumbling block preventing better performance until now.

They say the same thing every year though.

Not sure of what "free pass" Alexa has been given. I use Alexa daily and she understands what I want done and rarely fails. Siri, OTOH........

I mean people assume Alexa is better, despite not being AI and not always using natural language. For example instead of "Alexa open these blinds" you say "Alexa turn on the scene blinds open".

I haven't used an Echo, so not sure what the voice recognition is like, though!

That's just the way we operate.

Although - they will accept Google's money and make it the primary search engine on their device.

In other words - quite a spin.

...and then build technology into iOS and macOS which stops Google being able to track you with targeted ads related to what you search.

Sorry - are you trying to write off Apple treating customers as products? If so, you're failing.

I'm fine with protecting my privacy and not selling my personal info to the highest bidder but I just want Siri to actually understand me and do what I ask. That's all! If if they aren't able to do it as well as Google Assistant does it is due to protecting my privacy then maybe Siri just isn't gonna work out. Cause right not Siri sucks!

Much of Apple's Siri functionality is done on-device, rather than in the cloud like other services.

Then how come I can't ask Siri to set a timer or play a song that's on my device without a direct connection to Cupertino? Riddle me that, Siri.

Neither task should require any connection to the mothership, whatsoever. And don't feed me that line about better voice pronunciation/recognition, client-side dictation has been working perfectly fine for over two decades.

Of really, is that why when I ask Siri to play a Game of Thrones season that I already purchased, it dumps me on an iTunes screen for another copy of GoT that I haven't purchased?

Also, I tired of Siri telling me that I woke her up, but when I say go back to sleep she says Siri never sleeps.

Siri is the "least" personal, and useful, assistant out their today. I am hoping iOS 11 brings massive improvements to that platform.

.... And yes the competitor does sell your data and I'm glad that Apple doesn't....

Do you know the cost to purchase that data or a link to a webpage order form? Do you know what specific data Google sells? Names, addresses, what?

After I buy this data from Google, why would I stay a Google customer? I just bought the data I wanted. Seems like Google would have zero return customers.

It's actually in Google's best interest (all around) to keep your data safe and private.

It may be not the way they operate, but i don't really care... Their a business... Its their job to get info from customers to provide you service.. Weather they choose to say they don't share, is nothing to do with it, because u will never get that chance.

In actual fact the reason that much of the it is done "on device" is false... it has to go to server, because u must have internet access to use it, even for local only lookups.

Sorry, I had (wrongly, it seems) assumed you were arguing "Apple doesn't really care about user privacy. After all, it allows Google to be default on iOS as long as Google pays them enough"

I wanted to point out Apple had been working so that a user performing a Google search on an Apple device couldn't be served targeted ads by Google.

You were making a subtly different point, which I missed.

There's definitely a tinge of hypocrisy in that. I believe their intentions are good, but carrying out high principles with 100% consistency is tantamount to commercial suicide in today's business environment.

At the very least going with Google rather than Yahoo or Bing, was a sound decision since Google has the superior product, and most likely offered more for default status than the latter two were able to.

It may be disappointing to those with rigorous moral standards, but in the end business is all about performing for the shareholders or be replaced by someone who will. I suspect Tim struggles with some of his decisions.

What a glowing recommendation!

Your reply doesn't make any sense in regards to my post. I was just expressing my preferences regarding Siri. I never made any recommendations.

For reference, here is my post again. Feel Free to indicate where I was making any recommendations.

Much of Apple's Siri functionality is done on-device, rather than in the cloud like other services. In Apple's 2017 software updates, that's shifting slightly with the company planning to allow Siri to communicate across devices to learn more about users. Still, many things, like Siri's ability to find photos with a specific photo or date are powered on-device.

Then why, praytell, does it have to have Internet access to look up a contact on my phone, or a calendar appointment, or to play music that is ON MY IPHONE???!!!???

That would be the ultimate in privacy. Data that doesn't leave my device is harder to hack in the Cloud.
