I agree with this comment. I was very surprised at the Verizon store who was pushing way too much to sell a Samsung. In fact during my stay at the store these guys were telling everyone that Samsung was way advanced and a a far better value for money. Do these guys work on commission?
Yes of course.

i have an iphone x.
the notch bothers me when watching video.
I wish it wasn't there

I have yet to watch anything that fills up the screen to that dimension. The notch isn't even blocking almost all videos unless you are watching cinema ratio movies, or zooming in, which cuts off the top and bottom of the video, which is way more annoying than the notch.

It’s incredibly important for some to believe Apple failed at TouchID under the display. I assume that’s because in their minds, it rationalizes Samsung’s multiple year failure to get its under display technology working. (Supposedly they will be stuck with their plan C fingerprint sensor on the back again next year.)

The A11 and FaceID were in development for several years, and the design of the X was locked in November 2016, just as the design of the 2018 iPhone X.2 is now locked. Despite all rumors to the contrary, the X was always going to have FaceID.
True story. Apple also knew FaceID would be another marketing opportunity and the whole notch tech could be used in MANY other ways besides phone authentication.

Remember kids, it wasn’t simply TouchID for FaceID. It was TouchID for FaceID and many other things that haven’t even been developed. This 3D sensing tech is in its very early innings. FaceID is just one function.

I think a traditional wisdom is to not buy whatever the salespeople try hardest to sell you. They only sell to you what they earn the most but not what is the best to you.

I made my choice.

I just got my X a few days ago. The notch doesn't bother me surprisingly but I don't watch movies on it. FaceID has worked pretty well even lying down. I still don't think the notch is aesthetically pleasing and still surprised Apple did it.

I don't like the swipe up from the bottom to unlock though, need to be able to swipe up from the middle where the thumb normally is and they could just make a long press for bringing up notifications

I want a Spark and a Switch. Going to try and get a Spark next year.

Ill be honest, I love my 7 Plus, definitely my favorite iPhone going back to the 4S, but I’m jealous of all you iPhone X users! The more I read and use some of my friend’s iPhone X’s the more I want one! And I was deciding on the 8 Plus... ;)

Well I have 2 things to say about this article.

1. Of course Apple experimented with Touch ID under the screen. A company is going to explore MANY options with technology to see what works and what doesn't. This is just basic R&D. Apple most likely feels that admitting that will be seen as failure so they've required these guys to repeat the company line that they never intended it to be there from the beginning. This is marketing 101, guys.

2. I'm personally sad that they spent so much time “engineering” the screen to dull the colors down. I love the saturated colors of the Samsung display and I was really underwhelmed by the X's screen. I honestly like the 8's screen colors better than the X which is why I bought it instead. I'm sure my opinion is in the minority here, though. I still love Touch ID too.

I think I need to redo face ID and do it while lying down with my double chins. It fails probably at least 50% the time for me and pretty much always when I'm lying down. Miss touch ID and my headphone jack. :(
It learns. Just type in your code when it fails and it will update your face based on the failed conditions. Last week it wouldn’t recognise me in bed, this week it works without fail.

The notch doesn’t show when you watch video. Unless you zoom in of course.

Until they mandate all apps must utilize the full screen's real estate, it is not much different than the 8, sadly.
The apps are basically behaving like the 6s that I had with blank screen space above and below.

“Neural engine” reminds me of the BS marketing by Sony for the “Emotion engine” in the PlayStation 2 lol.

I think Joswiak makes a good point about the notch. As he mentioned, others have questioned the notch, but with all the embedded technology behind it, it serves it's purpose contrary to what others think behind the design aspect. I don't even notice the Notch and it's non issue for me. It Makes you appreciate its core purpose and how it's a part of the iPhone X, and will be for future iPhone models. It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing with the Notch, but it is Apples trademark for this iPhone.

Just make the frame at the top bigger (or the screen smaller). The notch is annoying and the only reason I am not buying the X (had every iPhone since the 1st one so far).

Apple's chip team "worked hand in glove" with the rest of Apple's hardware and software teams to design chips that are "perfectly suited" for the iPhone X's feature set. "That's huge," said Joswiak. "No one else can match that," he added.

Seems they went all in on chips and software, but forgot to involve the dudes from the Apple Design Team :D

Chip and software dudes: "Of course it will be fine if we cut out some of the screen to put in these awesome chips!" lol

You’re basically saying cut off the ears and make the bezel full width. If they wanted to do that, they would have done it this year. Instead, they opted to utilize what would otherwise be wasted space, by adding the ears.

They prototyped both versions, then decided on the notch. Though you dislike it, it’ll be here for the foreseeable future. Other manufacturers such as Samsung and LG do offer what you want, if Android is an option you’d consider.

I moved from a 5s to the X, last month. The biggest difference by far is the screen and camera quality. Functionally, I'm not sure it does anything that the old phone didn't do.

Face ID works well for me but the fact that it just leaves you on a home screen and doesn't take you back to where you were before is very, very annoying. I'm guessing the need for it to tell you to "swipe up" is related to patents because I can't see what it's purpose is.

Most annoying though is the difference in the way gestures work on the iPhone X and the new iPad. They are so different that they feel like they were designed by two different companies.

I keep hearing people say the notch is no big deal; that it's not long before they "don't even notice it." You know what I haven't heard yet?

"Boy, this notch looks great!"
"The notch really makes this phone look better"
"I was convinced to buy after seeing the notch"

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the first and only iPhone with the notch. Nor would I be surprised if it wasn't, though. I will be surprised if it becomes popular across many different phones over the next 2 years.

I think iPhone 8 would be a better option if it’d had the dual camera (plus is too big for me). And yes basically cutting the ears would be preferable.

Oaaaah Tim, soo excited.
Man, that Notch revived the software industry.
Actually it saved us out of that terrible Notchless Era as only Joni could have done.
It is the Shape of Things to Come

So far very pleased with my iPhone X. Face ID is great and does what it is supposed to do. Is it the most secure way to unlock a phone, No but I dont need that much security. As for the notch, its not a big deal.

Still more secure than Touch ID though.

For fooling Touch ID you need a fingerprint and $ 0.05 worth of conductive silicone. The rest should be obvious and has been demonstrated multiple times.

For fooling Face ID you need a professional mask making team, 3D scans of the person's face, high quality 2D iris pictures and some luck to get in within your 5 tries.

Nothing will come close to a strong alphanumeric password, but who would use that every time he's unlocking a phone? With my notebooks/PCs I don't have that issue, they get unlocked less frequently and mostly in a normal typing position, which makes it a 1 second thing. Typing my current PC password on a smartphone would be horrible.
