Um...it's called 'selling an app', you know, like actually making money from the sale of a product. If an ap isn't worth buying for $.99, I doubt the value will skyrocket merely by making it free and ad-supported.

I'd rather take the risk of getting an ad-supported free app than risk wasting $.99, wouldn't you?

iAds and data usage?

Are these potentially media rich iAds going to effect our data usage?

Get a job. If you can't afford a buck or two for a quality app, maybe you have other priorities in your life that should be concerning you.

amen.

iAds is terrible......ads anything is terrible.

if you can afford an iphone and you can afford the data plan and you can afford the internet connection to post replies on MacRumors......you can afford a freaking $1 or $2 app!!!!

data Caps

Who wants these iAds? With ATT's new data caps, why would anyone want to look at these if they waste bandwidth?

Exactly....there are people in this thread cheering the release of iAds....as if they didn't already have enough advertisements in their life.

"You know what makes me happy? More advertising! My life is now more complete!"

Its disgusting.

I don't get ads, i have never bought anything based on an advert or sales person. If someone try's to sell me a product in a store i kindly tell them to be quiet and buy the item or product i had already decided to buy by reading the full service description of the product.

When it comes to ads on web sites no i am never going to buy anything on them, if you want to advertise me a new car, phone, service good luck i am not going to buy it based on your ad.

I am going to go in and buy the car i want based on my what i want, once again in that situation the sales person will keep quiet unless i ask a question i have no interest in anything he/she may have to say or recommend.

I do not understand the logic that ads and sales people should be used in order to influence a sale, i want only factual information to base my decision on and it is preferable that not come from a human speaking nor flashy graphics that distract me from the data.

oo.apple.com (oo = opt out)

you must log on to this website from an iOS device (iPhone/iPod touch/iPad) if you don't want Apple to use data from your phone for dedicated Ads. You will still get ads, they just won't be anything specific to your age or location etc...

just FYi for anyone worried about privacy.

That's how I use them. If there's a choice I always download the free, ad-based version. If I like the program I'll eventually end up replacing it with the paid one.

A MUCH better system for trying things out then having crippled, free versions that don't do everything.

I hope you're being sarcastic, because the release of iAds does not increase ad usage one bit.

Let me make sure to understand what you're saying - when other ad companies were providing ads for developers within App Store applications, (such as AdMob) that was perfectly fine. Now that Apple has offered a similar service with the promise to make these ads less intrusive and more relevant, you hate it.

Why?

This doesn't benefit me the customer - only Apple and app developers.

So you see no benefit in a FREE App?

I think you're seeing it wrong. If the developers get paid by Nissan, then you get the App for free. Duh.

This totally benefits us in making better Apps for us for FREE.

Wow

Get a job. If you can't afford a buck or two for a quality app, maybe you have other priorities in your life that should be concerning you.

I don't think name calling is necessary. Calm down, or get out. I think people are making a good point, these ads are just replacing the lame boring ads that are already present in a lot of apps. If there are going to be ads anyway, who wouldn't want more interesting, well designed, interactive ads that someone might just have a little fun with?

It's not that we are looking forward to having ads, we are looking forward to better ads replacing horrible ads.

and just how do you hear about the products in the first place?
tom's?
consumer reports?
other?
all those review site's and magazines make the majority of their money from adds. so you're still a participant in the "circle of life" with the rest of us. adds pay the bills.

myself i enjoy good adds or adds that are interactive. hell, i joined in the cheeto wars today. good add!

Search for iAd

If you go to the app store you can search for iAd to get back about 10 or so results.

This seriously needs to stop with the ads you know how much money they are making just on ads alone. It's sick and unnecessary and misleading/corrupt. STOP it already or pay the consequences. No one likes ads!

That's why we're happy that Apple is doing the actual work! They bring the experience that will help avoid problems like that.

They're only doing the work for the first round because they didn't have the SDK ready in time for content developers like ad agencies. Future iAds will be produced by advertisers. I have a feeling Apple will still try to exert creative influence over these ads though.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have found a marketing drone!

Here are some wise words from the late comedian Bill Hicks about people in marketing:

"there's no rationalisation for what you do and you are Satan's little helpers. Okay - kill yourself - seriously. You are the ruiner of all things good, seriously. No this is not a joke, you're going, "there's going to be a joke coming," there's no f-----g joke coming. You are Satan's spawn filling the world with bile and garbage. You are f***ed and you are f-----g us. Kill yourself. It's the only way to save your f-----g soul, kill yourself."

Can all-things advertising related please not be a headline news story?

It's bad enough we're all obsessed with Apple and have the desire to hear about products before they're announced, but iAds? No thanks. The world is polluted by advertising enough as it is, I don't need to be updated on brainwash.

Headline stories which advertise a new form of advertising is disgusting.

Why wait? You can pay the consequences right now:

I read no consumer reports, no personal recommendations from family/friends, no review site, nada.

If i want a computer i go to the Apple website and order one, if i need food i go to the closest shop be it a butcher or supermarket, If i want a car i spend a good 1-2 months inspecting the various cars at the 20 or so dealers in town.

There will never have been an occasion when the price, discounts, sales person or any advertisements have been taken notice. I do not watch TV and for the most part ads are blocked while i am browsing, i will never use a comparison website.

My buying is direct and to for-fill the task i wish the product to preform.

One of the points of advertising is not necessarily to make you purchase the product right when you see the ad, it is to make you become aware of options that you have when you DO want to purchase something.

For instance, a car. Obviously that ad is not going to make you do anything, but it will help you become aware of the featured car so next time you want to buy a car, you might just check it out, from then on the car will sell itself.
