Bringing iMessage to external platforms would remove a major network effect benefit that Apple currently enjoys. Like it or not, blue messages signal that you have an iPhone and that’s going to be more desirable for many people. iMessage directly drives iDevice sales.

To put a finer point on it, I have a friend who bought an iPhone for the sole purpose of keeping up with the iMessage group chat amongst our friends.

Apple wants to sell hardware. iMessage itself is a cost center.
The Epic trial mails literally confirm that iMessage itself has „no cost“ for Apple (during the mail chain by Eddy Cue that discuss introducing an Android app).

Until it is cross-platform, it will never be anything close to a "social network" and not compete with those apps.

I'd love if iMessage everywhere regardless of the platform, I use iPads, iPhones and the Apple Watch but I never use Macs as I don't like them so the ability to send and receive iMessages on Windows would be amazing and it would be nice if if worked on Android as well.

I'd also like to see the ability to delete a message I sent if it was sent by mistake, and the ability to schedule a time for it to automatically send, so I could write it at 3am and have it automatically send it at 9am.

Isn't the Apple Photo Album Sharing feature exactly what you're looking for? I know it has likes and comments, but you don't have to use that... I use that feature with my family and my friends and it's exactly what I need - nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah But that's for albums and requires a little bit too much effort. Just a simple snap en upload feature would be nice. Like how Instagram was WAY back, before it became the cesspool of botox faces and iNfLuEnCeRs (🤮) it is now.

Meanwhile here in Europe a critical mass of people has moved to WhatsApp and other competitors. I'd love to use iMessage more, but frankly too many of my friends and family have Android phones and I'm not going to fiddle around with multiple platforms and play the continuous guessing game whether or not person X has an iPhone.

I make one exception to the no fiddling rule and that's increasingly trying to replace WhatsApp with Signal, but alas, both are cross-platform.

Above all, I want my default messenger to reach as many people as possible and iMessage with its iOS limitation is just not cutting it.
I’ve tried to get friends to leave GroupMe and WhatsApp for Signal. It’s not easy…

Can they please please please update the phone app. It’s so antiquated, and it still takes FOUR taps to listen to a voicemail from the app. And the UI is possibly the worst from Apple.
I suspect this would be an unpopular opinion among this message board, but I would advocate for a very radical overhaul of iMessage, FaceTime, Contacts and Phone into a SINGLE communications app. Make each one a tab in the Communications App, and integrate it. I don't need 4 apps that overlap in so many ways.

Android iMessage app.
icloud.com iMessage page.

Please Apple.
I would love an iCloud message option that could be used on Windows.

It drives me crazy that our extended family chat is on Facebook Messenger even though every person involved in the chat has an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Why we can't do this as a group iMessage is beyond me....

I would like iMessage to be more customizable. I'd like to rearrange emojis & even be able to remove some.

I'd really like the option to mark a message as unread (or even snooze the notification), like you would with an email you intend to deal with later. I can't count the number of tmes someone messages me, I read it at an inopportune time to message back, and then forget all about it because there's no new message indicator.

this is an interesting idea. I find the current mess of buttons and whatnot is currently a bit cumbersome. Like how Phone has to kind of figure out what each contact is capable of in terms of video so often. Theyd need to way simplify somehow without losing the power while still making it easy to navigate and not a thousand click through to get where you want to go. Example is going from a Messages chat to the contact where you can actually select the phone number. Its so many touches.

iMessage will never truly take off as a "social network" until it's cross platform. Half of my friends use Android phones; we all use Telegram to chat because it's available on all our devices.
I didn’t realize Android didn’t have sms messaging. That’s pretty sad. Still, if any of your friends have windows mobile or a Firefox phone you can still use iMessage with them.

Useless outside USA, in the rest of the world, nobody uses it.
So what?

We're a big country and a sizable portion of people here use iOS. So it's useful here and those of us who use it may well be interested in some updates in functionality. Nobody here has ever suggested we move a convo to Whatsapp. They either have an iPhone (like, 90% of the time in my experience and among people I've encountered) and we use iMessage, or they have an Android and when I text them it's an SMS. Either way, I use one app, Messages, to message everyone. Group messages end up in iMessage, or they revert to SMS if someone in the group has an Android phone. Life goes on. Like 99% of the messages I'm sending are literally just little strings of text so it doesn't matter a ton to me either way.

The only time I've had to deal with Facebook Whatscrap is when I've travelled and had to download it to communicate with locals. Then I've come home and deleted it immediately.

Why would I settle on SMS/MMS messaging with a significant amount of my friends and family when competitors provide a much better service?

I know the US is different for some reason, but if I suggested to people here in Europe that we should move our individual and group chats to SMS there'd be a lot of laughter. And then everyone would go back to WhatsApp.

No it doesn't.

I'm an absolute Apple fanboy with multiple Apple devices, but no, iMessage doesn't crush anything. It might have that appealing minimal Apple UI and look, it might work reliably, but it doesn't do anything better (apart from maybe privacy) than WhatsApp or Signal.

And please, US people, stop believing that iMessage is the world leader in messaging. It's not. In Europe it's irrelevant.
I would be more than happy to turn it into my main messaging app, but more than half of my family, friends and colleagues own Android devices, so we all communicate through WhatsApp. Even with the ones with iPhones.

And please, stop with that "social network" non-sense. Nobody needs "social" features in an app who's number one function is send and receive messages. These apps should limit themselves to send and receive content in a 1-on-1 or grouped way. Period. That's what I want iMessage or WhatsApp for. Not for "social networking".

Give me Signal like Android and the ability to set it as default. Or even Telegram.
Yes, Signal for iOS and Android are different.

Sounds like just more fluff from Apple and this is what they call major updates.

No! I would like to see Apple:

1. redesign the notification center. It's ridiculous.

2. give us an LED visual if there are notifications waiting and allow us the change the colors of the LED based on what the notification app is. The fine folks who like things the way they are can just turn this off and be constantly hitting the screen on their phones to see if there are any messages when the phone is on mute, much like we all do all day long with the current system.

3. give us an always on screen for the clock. On the always on screen we should also be able to choose if we want to see if we have any notifications (the amount and the app) or if we to just want see the clock.

4. add haptic feedback to the keyboard, and make it possible to customize different intensities to your heart's content. It's crazy that you have no feedback whatsoever if you're typing and the phone is on mute. Those who are concerned with battery can just turn it off.

5. make it possible to adjust volume for independent apps and settings and not this general thing they're doing. Separate volume control for keyboard volume, music volume, ring volume, system volume. For example, I would like the keyboard clicks to be much louder than they are but without it affecting the volume on the whole phone or the ring and notifications volume. It's silly of Apple to force it to be like this.

6. add suggestions from the address book as you start a phone number.
Common now Apple, this has been available for the last 15 years on Android.

7. make it possible to customize the texting app in every conceivable way. Font size, bubble size shape color etc.

8. make it possible to schedule a text message to be sent at a certain time/date.

9. make it possible to move the icons on the desktop anywhere you want to.

10. use an OS-wide clipboard and make cut and/or copy not expire until you, the user, cleans it. You should be able to copy text now and paste it tomorrow if you want to. And with multiple copy entries ready by long pressing, at least the last 10 cut/copies should be in memory.

11. in Mail give us the option to NOT go to the next email when you are deleting an email but to go back to the inbox.
