So it'll only work with human faces? What about with animals or inanimate objects in the foreground?

A99ii is so passé. GFX ftw. :p

SURE!... I'll give you that. The 50S will be $6-8K (or whatever "will be well under $10K" means), you can get an A99II for half that... but power to you

The issue is one of registration when it comes to the two photos before you can combine. Having two focal lengths makes it a lot more difficult, and a lot less useful since the noise doesn't map correctly between the two frames. The end result is that you can make the noise worse rather than better. There are techniques that could be applied here, but there's a lot of bad trade offs involved to the point where it doesn't really help in many real low-light photography situations (portraits, scenes with motion, etc).

Yep.

That's why I was somewhat disappointed when they mentioned the two different focal lengths in the keynote.

I'd honestly rather have two cameras of the same focal length doing their special mojo to make one great image.

But then there are other people who want the 2X zoom.

Apple went with the latter. I can't fault Apple for that though... it's still a compelling feature.

Androids have been blurring backgrounds for awhile now. How does having a telephoto make the bokeh better? Or does it not? Does it separate the foreground and background better because it can detect the depth better?

Most definitely yes. I probably haven't seen everything in the Android world, but this runs circles around what I've seen, and the tech does require both cameras.

Does the beta bring back grouping notifications by app rather than just "today" and "yesterday?"

Were you actually expecting to get optical bokeh from lenses and sensors the size of your pinky nail? :)

This was always gonna be a digital effect applied in post.

The iPhone may do a billion calculations when you press the shutter... but this is still a special effect.

I was honestly hoping that you could use image data from both cameras combined to make one good picture... not this faux-blurred-Photoshop effect.
You seem to have a solid grasp on the mechanics of portrait mode. Please enlighten us.

I am inside my office so its very dark so this is not the best photo... but this is not a human and it was able to apply the depth.

There's nothing "mechanical" about it. That's the problem.

It's a digital blur EFFECT added to the image.

Even though the two cameras are measuring the depth... the resulting blur is completely manufactured.

It looks pleasing... but it's FAKE :D

It works with animals and inanimate objects as well...

Yes -- check out the two dogs in the Tech Crunch piece. That one was particularly impressive because the dogs weren't the same distance from the phone, yet the software recognized that they both were foreground objects. Based on these early indications, Apple may have hit this one out of the park.

It even includes a Live Preview effect that lets you see what the image will look like before you take it, something that's unique to the iPhone.
Live Preview, wow, check out this, Apple:

EDIT: The video shows a refocusing of an image shot on a dual camera Huawei phone. Some people below claim it's a "live focus preview" which iPhones already can do or it's some "software trickery" which 3rd party apps were able to do forever vs revolutionary Apple's optical invention. It's not a preview nor trickery. Huawei P9 has a dual camera setup like an iPhone 7 Plus. Basically Huawei uses the same technique as Apple and achieves more than just a blurred background.

They're talking about live preview of the BLUR EFFECT.

You just showed focus preview.

iPhones are already able to preview focus. I just did it on my iPhone 6S Plus.

So no... Huawei didn't "do it first" :D

Focus preview of what? The phone is LYING ON THE TABLE. Huawei can refocus image after it was shot using the same dual camera setup.

So yes, it did it first and did much more than a blurred background.

Except that Huawei is using just trickery like many third party apps, just an elaborate blur effect, they don't have two lenses at different focal distances.

Apple's effect is optic.
