Apple's 'iPad Mini' Media Event Reportedly Scheduled for October 23

It's funny as I read the comments because half of the comments are about people wanting a new iMac, Mac mini, or Mac pro.
Hopefully Apple does release these along with the iPad mini because I too am waiting for an iMac.
Imagine a black slate iMac with a better anti glare screen, black slate keyboard and trackpad, thinner and chinless with glowing Apple on front when on. Ivy bridge and USB 3 and thunderbolt!! Desktop grade gpu's.....droooooolllll!!!!! Lol

imo its complete bs until the invites are out...

I'll believe it when I see it

The invite could have the regular iPad and something hinting as an iPad mini and some people still won't be convinced.

Smaller more portable than the current ipad but wifi only with last years tech. Fail.

"Last year's tech" doesn't seem to hinder Apple's sales much. Look at the iPhone 5...lame update compared to other platforms yet it'll make them millions and millions.

Not a fail when it come to bottom line. That's what matters for the Big Execs at Apple. Fail for us, yes.

Annoying like starving masses showing up everywhere demanding to be fed because they can't be bothered to eat canned food that fills their cupboards - they only want the fresh stuff and nothing else will suffice, so they starve and complain. Really annoying, eh?! I just ignore them.

Isn't Apple reporting on the 25th?
Two days before then they announce the iPad Mini?
Is this to soften the blow on a bad quarter?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
I sure hope not!!!

that is already expected because of the pend up demand for iPhone 5. remember iPhone 5 sales was for few days on the quarter.

But this holiday quarter Apple will have blow out quarter.

I do not think apple just delaying for reporting, it just that they are making sure they have enough stock to sell before announcing (it could be some Mac also 13" MBP retina, iMac :p )

Which platform made the bigger jump than 4S->5 in hardware? The only one I know is Windows Phone 8 but that's only because Windows Phone 7 didn't support latest hardware.

Sorry, don't own a single Apple product that i *NEED* for one task or another, that cannot be accomplished with a much cheaper alternative (OK, maybe my ipod).

and there are few house repair tasks that i *cant* do w/ a cheap walmart tool...but i prefer quality tools because they work better. the user experience, if you will. it's real. you know it, i know it.

And to use your analogy, if somebody runs out every year to get the newest model "high-end power tool" while their 10 month old high end power tool is more than capable of doing everything they need, but just isn't the new one, then yes, those people are only doing it for status and not utility.

remember what i said about tech-nerds not "getting" the normal populace? youre doing it right now. see, normal people *dont* go out and get the latest idevice annually. only geeks on this forum do. trust me...my family, in-laws, etc, dont do annual upgrades because thats silly. i myself do, not because its a status symbol*, but because im a developer and an enthusiast... i dont like cars or sports, or have children, so i spend extra money on my tools. thats fine.

*and really, status symbol? a louis vitton bag is thousands of dollars...an iphone is as little as $0...not much of a status symbol, is it? and considering that millions upon millions upon millions have the exact same models in their grubby paws, you cant really make an argument for them being symbols of elist wealth and power, can you? get real.

You should have stopped typing at 'OK' too if that's your reply! Why did you even bother. Don't like the fact Apple puts 30% minimum mark up on its hardware and then strictly controls that pricing globally across all retailers, that's not my problem.

I think you're full of BS like most people who go on about this non-existent "Apple tax".

What exactly is lame about the iphone 5? Not having NFC and wireless charging? I doubt that will hinder sales.

With the new iPod Touch coming in at a whopping $299!!!! Where are they going to price this thing?? ... not sure I would pay $299 for it ... and I definitely have no plans to get a $300-$400 iPod Touch... Maybe the fancy strap adds $100+ to the cost of the touch?

Completely agree where would this even fit in the current line up price wise? Personally still don't think it will happen but could be wrong

Would prefer to see a new iMac!

Yes, you won't likely be getting one. Lots of people will pay $399 for one. That will most likely be the price. Some will think it's too high. The new iPod Touch at $199 and the iPad mini at $299 would sell more units, but Apple will make more money selling with higher profit margins. If you owned a company which would you want...More units sold or more money made selling fewer units? The bottom line always wins. ;)

slow clap slow clap slow clap.... another utterly useless response, well done! Let me know when I can buy an iPad or iPod for less then the Apple RRP. Because I would love to know...

And you also one of these people that seems to think Apple's massive wealth has somehow grown on trees, it can't possibly be due to massive mark ups on it's products as well as apps and music..

Apple tax is a well known well discussed topic, I don't need you to believe anything, but if you somehow think it actually costs $1199 to make a mass produced computer then your rather ignorant and naive.

Isn't anyone concerned about all of these leaks and this Jim Dalrymple having intimate knowledge of when a release will happen? I thought all publicly traded companies were governed by the same rules with regard to insider trading.

You don't have to actually trade on information in order to be charged with either insider trading or misappropriation. The latter usually occurs when an non-insider gains information through their employer who might be a distributor, manufacturer or other business partner with the company in question.

If the SEC was doing their job, there would be a lot more people under investigation and a lot fewer leaks. It also seems that someone at Apple is not doing their job properly either.

It seems as if where I work, we take security more seriously than Apple does. I cannot really talk any specifics about my work with anyone outside of my organization no matter how close they might be. There are some things that I cannot even talk about with other colleagues on other teams or departments.

You lost me at black slate. The alu/black look which was introduced with the '07 iMac and then spread like wildfire across the entire Mac range IS the Mac identity now, and the new Retina MBP sports the same look. It's what sets Mac apart from the rest. If they went black it'd just drown in a sea of black PCs. Ivy Bridge and USB3, you bet. Chinless... probably not. If they drop the optical drive, which they might, they could perhaps move some stuff to occupy that space, but then they'd miss the opportunity to make it thinner, and that would mean an Apple keynote where they don't get to say "It's so THIN!" 200 times, and that's not going to happen. If Cook, Schiller and Ive were deprived of the opportunity to declare that something has become thinner again they'd lose all sense of purpose and kill themselves.

Exactly... and that's actually how it's playing out.

Last quarter... Apple only sold 4 million iPod Touches that started at $199 and went up to $399

In that same quarter... Apple sold 17 million iPads that started at $399 and went up to $829

I think the iPod is out... and the iPad is in.

The more expensive (and higher margin) product is selling more.

Either you haven't been paying attention, or you never read what other people post here. Folks like me have been waiting for this (and have been vocal about it) since the first iPad came out - well before your join date.

Why? At that time Steve said there would never be a smaller iPad. And from what I've read here for the past year and a half, the majority of the users scorned the idea of a smaller iPad. But lo and behold, once it became apparent that the rumors were true, it suddenly became a great idea. This isn't directed at you, as I know there were some here who did like the idea of a smaller tablet.

If you're planning on seeing a price lower that 300, get ready to be disappointed. Apple has no reason to charge that little, and lose money. In case you haven't noticed, they like to have a large margin on their products. With that said, I can only hope that the specs are great to justify the premium price. Go hi res screen!

Seeing some of the rumors regarding WIFI only? I understand this from being able to price it more competitively, but does it make sense for a smaller, more portable iPad to be portability constrained by only offering a WIFI version? I'm not sure I'm buying this rumor...

I'm with u in this one.

However, one can always tether...

Everyone is wrong, they're going to release the new iPod classic.:)

Hilarious!!! ;D

I still don't see a market for a iPad mini just another iOS device thats not necessary.

Here come the thumbs down :p

Market? how about:

- all of those who never bought the current iPad because it is too big/expensive/heavy/bulky

- current iPad owners who want to either move to a more portable version of iPad or just own both

- current android/kindle owners who want to switch to iOS finally on a more accessible price

- kids market who never got an iPad for being too expensive. iPad mini will be out of stock this Holiday Season

Is that enough market for you?

You are right about one thing though, it might be not NECESSARY, but many of us just WANT one of those badly! ;)

A typical Apple event is 90 minutes long. I can’t see how the iPad Mini will occupy all that time. The order of the presentation will go something like this:
  • The amazing sales figures of the iPhones rollout – 2 minutes.
  • A video on the iPhone release or the “magical” iPad – 2 minutes
  • Now to the App Store… - 2 minutes
  • Here’s the new iPad Mini. It’s smaller, thinner, lighter, just as fast and last just as long as the iPad 2, run all apps from the Mac App Store – 30 minutes
  • One or two developers share demos of their apps – 15 minutes

And we are only at the hour mark. Apple can obviously do more than that.

Didn't you hear? This will be Keynote Mini.
