I agree.

You have the Kindle2, Nexus 7 and if the Surface is $199. People who want a tablet but not at $500 will pick these up. Microsoft is also a big name and people will feel comfortable going with them probably more so than an Android device.

I don't think Apple is going to want to lose market share to those other devices because eventually it can start sliding into iPhone sales. A person gets a MS Surface and then likes it and when it's time to upgrade their phone they decide to go with a Ms Mobile phone

How in the world does MS price the Surface RT at $199 without taking huge losses and really pissing off their OEM partners? Unless this device isn't all its hyped up to be? Even the most rabid MS supporters are questioning the logic of this (and most are calling the rumor BS). Why would MS want to play in the race to the bottom? If the Surface is a premium tablet in terms of build quality, specs, apps, etc. why would they price it in a way that basically cheapens it?

The price rumour was already defunct. Someone said it appeared in some documents a while ago, can't remember what but it was NEVER mentioned as an RRP price, it is just rumour sites and tech journalists taking 1 and 1 and making 5.
I mean a MS Surface for the price of a Nexus 7!!

I just questioned myself and tested it. If I need to type URLs and whatnot I would rest it on a surface if possible. But at no time did I need to put my thumb over the screen.

So it's just like an iPhone other than you can't actually use it without resting it on a surface.

I don't know how they would price it at $199. Even if the sold it for $299 it would still do well.

Just because something doesn't cost a ton of money doesn't mean it can't be quality.

Either way it's still going to force Apples hand to get in to the smaller tab market.

I would actually assume that an iPad XL would be thinner as well, since it has more surface area to fit things inside of. They're fitting an iPad into a smaller screen size, so if it actually were to be thicker even, it wouldn't be surprising.

Not as obvious as you think.

A smaller screen needs a much smaller battery (aka less space occupied). Seems obvious to me.

It looks really sexy! My only two concerns:

1. Bezel looks too narrow to comfortably hold without touching the screen.
2. This could cannibalize iPad (big) sales, which I assume have larger margins plus the larger price point.

I suppose they could offer just one pretty stripped down mini, while the larger is still the flagship product with more features and options. Maybe make 4G standard in the large iPad??

We'll see!

I STILL DON'T BELIEVE APPLE WOULD EVER RELEASE THIS!!
Here's why....Apple once said they were not scared of cannibalizing their pc sales with the iPad but I believe they are scared of cannibalizing their iPad sales!! iPhone is in a whole different league to do it but an iPad mini would kill off the bigger iPad!! Why buy a 600$ iPad when you can get the mini with a slightly smaller screen for a much lower price??
iPad is killing everything right now why mess with success??

The success won't last with the Nexus 7 at $199. It is actually a good tablet, unlike the Fire, etc. Tim has stated that they will never allow competitors a way to undercut them like this. Look at the iPod as an example. They had many different price points.

Could this actually be a replacement for the ipod touch? Nothing so far has suggested the latter will receive an update, and they know people can purchase an iphone without pay extornionate amounts.

If this news about the size, weight, and thickness is true, this will be Apple's best-selling product of all time. Especially so if it's $250 or less.

I hope they have an optional hand-strap on the back to enable holding it easily. With the narrow boarders and overall size, there appear to be no way to hold it without touching the screen and activating something.

Ok so now we know it's going to sit in the iPod family rather than the iPad I wonder what they will call it. My guess is they will drop the iPod Touch name and simply call them both "the new iPod" available in 2 sizes (4" and 7") - just like they do with the MBP, MBA and iMac.

Now the interesting part. Apple seems to be standardising on 2 size models for each product. So come next March what's to say we won't see a larger iPad to add to the current 10" model. My guess would be that they will add a 13" iPad model.

iPod touch thin!? Holy crap...

If its truly that thin I might trade in my "New iPad" if I can manage to lose the retina

I'm pumped to see the announcement and will definitely be picking up a couple of these for longer distance family to FaceTime with.

$249 is key, I hope they hit that...

the thing is though the ipod touch is around that price, how can they have the mini at that too?

How? Seems like having less inert grip area would make it tricker to hold.

probably because it reduces the overall width of the device and it may be possible to hold it in one hand with your hand on the back of the ipad with your thumb on one side and your fingers on the other.

Microsoft can weather the loss like they did with XBOX ($3.5 billion loss by 2005).

The game console industry is different. It's always been like that, they sell the consoles at a loss in the beginning, but since the consoles stay the same hardware for much longer they can drop the price in the future as the hardware gets cheaper. That wouldn't be the case with a tablet as there are new versions out on the market each year, and they can't keep making good tablets with new hardware for the price of $199,- each year. And making the price higher is not exactly a very good move either.

So it's just like an iPhone other than you can't actually use it without resting it on a surface. You're an idiot.

Lol.. Soooo.. aggressive. Feel better now?

Actually I'm a designer. Well practiced in testing theories and research thank you very much. Like I said before, we are all entitled to our opinions. I won't lose any sleep. ;)

Have a nice day!!!

The thinner bezel on the sides doesn't make sense to me. They compare it to the iPhone, but the iPhone you cradle your entire hand around. You can't do that with an iPad Mini size device. Furthermore, you want to read, ideally, in portrait mode, and the thin bezels seem like they'd make it more difficult to hold, not easier.

Based on the numbers listed the ipad mini would be a little less than 5.5 inches wide. You can't cradle that in your hand? Go grab a piece of paper and fold it in half, then turn it sideways and hold it. That is 5.5 inches wide.
