I STILL DON'T BELIEVE APPLE WOULD EVER RELEASE THIS!!
Here's why....Apple once said they were not scared of cannibalizing their pc sales with the iPad but I believe they are scared of cannibalizing their iPad sales!! iPhone is in a whole different league to do it but an iPad mini would kill off the bigger iPad!! Why buy a 600$ iPad when you can get the mini with a slightly smaller screen for a much lower price??
iPad is killing everything right now why mess with success??

Success doesn't last forever. They have to keep moving. Once people's perception changes, it is too late.

I just got a new Nexus 7 and I like its size, which is half of an iPad. The future iPad Mini should not be bigger.

7 is not half of 10. ;)

However, after using the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, the size alone makes me believe there will be a nice market for a smaller iPad.

Not light enough? iPad 2 is just barely too heavy to hold in one hand, and with this form factor combined with a weight around 200g it will most likely be perfect for one hand-usage.

I totally agree. As mentioned previously, I can hold my iPad in one hand and do. This smaller, lighter form factor should be fine.

If it doesn't have a retina screen, which I doubt it will, it will not kill off the bigger iPad. Sorry, but a smaller screen at a lower resolution won't appeal to many people. When you use a retina device, everything else seems meh.

That was one of the key reasons for my upgrading from iPad 2 to 3....

Don't get me wrong the screen on the iPad 2 isn't bad by any means, it's just after using the retina screen on my iPhone 4 the iPad 2 looked blurry by comparison and that bugged me to the point of splashing the cash for the upgrade to a retina iPad well before I'd budgeted for it. I'd originally planned to keep the iPad 2 for at least 2 years, in the end I managed about 11 months.

Having purchased a Nexus 7 recently, all I can say is that Apple has some seriously tough competition if it plans to go chasing after the 7" tablet market. I never thought I would, but I actually prefer the Nexus 7 a lot more than my Retina iPad.

The Nexus 7 really is a beautifully engineered bit of kit, brilliant value for money and I love everything about it. I can't see how Apple can compete with it. Really Apple should focus on making the current iPad better, give it more apps (like a calculator) and get rid of the crippling software bugs.

Yes if only the iPad had a calculator it would be perfect.

Hopefully the Nexus 7 can better the Nexus 6 regarding its 4 year lifespan, I never did rate the Tyrell corporation that highly anyway.

The challenge is making everything fit in that smaller space while ensuring that it still "just works". Not everything can be shrunk that easily. I expect parts like the camera, processor, memory and so on to be more or less the same size. So the challenge is deciding what can be taken out or downsized, and how to do so in a manner that will not result in a drop in user satisfaction.

For instance, you can't just say "I will just downsize the battery", because then, you loose bragging rights to one purported strength of the ipad - its long battery life (relative to laptops).

Just look at the ultrabook market. By your comment, it ought to be easier to design and manufacture a macbook air compared to a honking 17" gaming laptop. If it were, we wouldn't have to contend with netbooks and their watered down specs. Likewise, compare the Rmbp with the Cmbp; tell me which clearly requires more engineering research to make it work? :)
The explanation is quite simple really, this is Apple we're talking about. They do these types of things year after year. It's all rather routine.

I did not believe it either, until the Nexus 7 showed up. But I don't think a 7" is something the iPad lineup can live without anymore. Apple has to compete, just like Usain Bolt, or it can't expect to retain its title as tablet leader.

The 7" iPad might cannibalize the 10", but the Nexus 7, and possible Win 8 Tabs WILL eat the 10"s marketshare if Apple doesn't have a player in the field. (Sorry for all the sports analogies.)

Also the I don't think anyone looking at a 10" iPad is going to buy a 7" iPad just because it's less expensive anymore than people buy an 11" MBA over a 13". The price gap isn't that huge. People buy on the features they need. OTOH I can see people who already own a 10" buying a $299/$399 7" as a 2nd iPad b/c they already own all the apps.

I was at the football final at the Olympics on Saturday.

I saw two guys using what looked like iPad minis. I know there are probably many cheap chinese copies of iPads, but these looked exactly like the new iPad - just smaller. I could tell that it used iOS, and the printings on the back was similar to my iPad.

I took this poor picture, where you can get an impression of the size of the "iPad mini".

It's hard for me to believe that this actually would be a real copy of the iPad mini, or maybe a prototype, as Apple usually manage to keep them away from the public. But now you know what I saw...

can't tell if the dimensions are correct, anyone else?

It's danger of canabalizing your own sales is more complicated than that.

Apple's competitors are finially making competative products and have found a market strategy to compete: 1/2 the screen size & storage at 1/2 the price with twice the portability.

Apple will be happy to canabalize sales of the 9.7" iPad if the alternative is out-right losing sales to a competitor, not to mention the sales that wouldn't have happened at all without the smaller form factor.

There's no way Apple is worried about canabalizing 9.7" iPad sales. Think about the experience they had with the different models of iPods. Do you think they regret coming out with the iPod Mini/Nano?

Why is there so much negativity in this forum?

Hi Sunshine, welcome to the internet! ;)

Are you from an alternate dimension?

Just curious what these crippling software bugs are?

Microsoft is struggling mightily with smartphone OS (3.5% compare to 68.1% for Android). It has 1 shot with tablet because App developers need a big market to justify creating apps.

Which mean gaining meaningful marketshare is imperative. Even MS noted this:

According to Redmond's recent SEC filings, Microsoft is committed to launching Surface as "a series of devices" that it says will be of strategic importance to the Windows ecosystem.

"Establishing significant scale in the marketplace is necessary to achieve and maintain competitive margins," the company states. "The strategic importance of a vibrant ecosystem increases as we launch the Windows 8 operating system, Surface devices, and associated cloud-based services."

As such, it may be that Microsoft has decided that blasting into the tablet market with rock-bottom prices is its best hope of gaining the market share it craves, given the fierce and growing competition.

Marketshare in tablet = app developers and a successful appstore.
MS can use this for the smartphone market.

$199 for the Surface might lose a lot of money but in some levels, it does make a lot of sense if MS want a significant "mobile" marketshare.

Another thing to think about although they may lose money on the device at $199.

What if they have certain apps that tie into the Xbox360 or the new one soemthing like a remote or if you have a surface there's an app on xbox live that will allow you bring up your straffing map or some other comms in Call of Duty but if they can some how tie it in to the gaming system and sell DLC for it, they'll make a killing.

I agree.

You have the Kindle2, Nexus 7 and if the Surface is $199. People who want a tablet but not at $500 will pick these up. Microsoft is also a big name and people will feel comfortable going with them probably more so than an Android device.

I don't think Apple is going to want to lose market share to those other devices because eventually it can start sliding into iPhone sales. A person gets a MS Surface and then likes it and when it's time to upgrade their phone they decide to go with a Ms Mobile phone

THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN!

We have had NO parts leaks apart from rumoured backplates from prototypes that are said to be several years old, yet analysts claim it will be launched next month alongside the iPhone. And we apparently now ever detail practically of the next iPhone.

Also the MS Surface price of $200 has already been defunct and is total bogus and you cannot apply the Xbox business model to a tablet!

And again IF an iPad mini was launched it will be at least $300 and up but more likely $350 and up.
