The thing is, it is obvious that Apple is way behind Gemini and ChatGPT, but for me even these two are far from good enough. I was hoping that Apple would give me something way better right on the iPhone and Mac. I'd be so happy. But now this.

The way I read this is that Apple realizes that their current compute infrastructure can’t scale in time to power their own product in time for iOS 18 release given supply constraints. I would expect them to build out their own infrastructure and R&D and the. Switch to their in house product

Apple should stay away from Google's AI. Other companies and entities are working on generative AI. For example, Adobe has their generative AI Firefly.

I thought Apple was developing their own AI. Looks like all they are going to do is partner with another company.

Why are they so behind here?
Honestly, all big companies were behind. Google and Microsoft were just faster in acquiring companies than Apple.

improve useful things. Like better keyboard, better haptics (is basically null the haptics in iPhone 15 pro max), let us edit a mistyped number in the dial pad, fix Bluetooth compatibility, remove the notch, make the batter last longer, make the phone lighter. Make the apps stop overheating and over using the CPU, specially WHATSAPP!.
My iPhone battery last not longer than my iPhone 7 in its time. Is just heavier and hotter.

If you use Siri, then you already use Google as that’s what Siri uses for search.
I don't use Siri. I wasn't aware of that though - thank you for letting me know. I truly hope apple can retain it's independence. That was my entire reason for moving to Apple products. If they can't then I will have to move on. Apple is a great company - I hope they can.

Can Apple like, avoid cloud-based AI? They can't say "Yay earth! Yay zero carbon footprint!" and partner with servers that demand so much energy and cooling water.
I’m sure they would love to offer carbon neutral AI. Unfortunately market forces dictate they have to get on board NOW or lose their market share. People want AI, whether it’s a hype or a real thing. It makes sense for Apple to stay on the cloud based AI sidelines for a while and focus on on-device AI. That is fully in their wheelhouse!

It also makes perfect sense for Apple to discuss with both Google and Open AI. They both would love to enter the iOS market and have an exclusive deal. I’d love to be a fly on the wall of those negotiations🪰…

I’m a grumpy old codger, but is generative AI functionality actually any kind of priority at the OS level? If I want semi-coherent text with mangled facts and fictional references or a picture of eight-fingered humans, there are plenty of websites and apps I can choose from. What we need baked into the *OSes is more along the lines of more flexible interpretation for Siri inputs, and Apple’s in-house on-device LLMs should be plenty capable of handling that.
