Wow. Korea seems to really have it out for Apple. Maybe it has something to do with Samsung being a Korean company?
What about those infamous trials in North California courts that made Samsung pay for making the phones with "rounded corners"?

Apple is merely collecting VAT on their sales and sending it to the government. So what is wrong with charging 33% or 16.5%? I suppose if South Korea finds that unbearable Apple could always raise the prices of their devices and services to make up for it… 🍏🍏🍏

I hope this is not a poor version of the "jewish anecdote" where ole question is answered with another.
No, I am not, and I did point it out.
So you frequent a website that is specifically for a company that you aren't a fan of. Interesting. You do you. I'll just assume you are envious of Apple products and regretful of your purchase of inferior products so you spend time here trying to rationalize your poor purchase decisions to yourself.

Gee, thats a lot of assumptions, almost all of them wrong. In case you gave your deductive skills (or lack of such) a fair shot - you failed.
I do own apple products. Off the top of my head... 4 ipods, 2 ipads, 2 macbooks, 1 mac mini and 1 good old fashioned apple ipod/iphone speaker. Not counting what I owned/borrowed before. Been a user of their products on and off, and have chosen those products (or not) depending if they workes for me ... or not.
So I am actually talking as a customer and long time user.

Now that being said I have not entered a lottery where a ticket puchase is required, and even IF I did not own apple products for the last 18 years the last argument... literally the very last on the list of "reasons I do not give a f*** about" would be your feeble attempt at an impromptu ad hominem at me as an aasumed non-cutomer. Even if so, I doubt the korean govt does not have to be apple customers either to be able to ram a search warrant deeo into their anus at 5 o clock in the morning.
That veibg said - market position abuse, tax evasion trough gray area loopholes, customer-unfriendly ecosystem and deveoper-abusive fees are but a few big white elephants apple has tried/is tryinh to sweep under the rug. And to say ... just that, along with your beligerent fanboyism and all the infantile remarks that entails, is our common right.

Seems like you’re looking in the mirror when you talk about “beligerent fanboyism and all the infantile remarks”.

Nothing to do with the fact that Samsung is a South Korean based company.

From Walmart to numerous other foreign companies, South Korea reels them in, learns their business, then uses the government to push them out. The next day, the store names change and are taken over by a Korean company running everything. They've used this model to grow business for years. A few chaebol companies (LG, Samsung, Hyundai, etc) and families behind them control everything -- and have a tremendous influence on the government. Foreign companies in areas like the banking industry are punished for making too much money off of the locals. Just search "Lone Star Bank Korea" to read about that one.

tax added or not added, Apple collects the tax required and pays it.

so is there documented proof (not heresay) that Apple is paying devs less that the 70% (or 85%) of the untaxed amount paid?

Apple will be in rentseeking overdrive before regulation hits and the sideloading frenzy begins. Can't blame them they should make the most of it while they can

No it’s legal. May not be liked, but no different than physical models.

Which part? Some of their business practices were banned in South Korea and they had to change them to be compliant as they are elsewhere in the world.

From the original article..

In January, Apple announced that it would comply with a new South Korean law that bans app store operators from requiring developers to use their own in-app purchase systems. In late June, the change came into effect, enabling developers to offer alternative payment systems in South Korea.

No Apple is still able to collect it's commission in South Korea. The thing, which I may not be 100% correct on, is even using a devs own payment service, Apple can still collect it's commission.

It's dishonest to call it a 30% cut.

Maybe it's illegal, too, but why would you need to raid their office to determine that? Seems like a very simply question for the courts.
They have to examine how much thought Apple put into it.

Is it an honest mistake, or were there internal emails at Apple going back and forth about how it was illegal and doing calculations about whether it'd be more profitable to break the law and then pay fines when they're caught vs just not breaking the law in the first place.

It's a lot of fun when courts discover the expected fines were factored into the decision to break the law. That leads to vastly higher fines than otherwise. See VW's dieselgate, for example.

You are correct sir. This is categorically unrelated.
Apple is a bad faith actor, and guilty on their own merits. I hope the law punishes them so that people who create the applications are treated better. 26% surcharge just for using different payment processing, guilty.

x% for using Apple IP to make money and cutting Apple out of the entitled revenue.

Well, people would still buy, or not buy it.
It's Apples right to choose the price they want to sell their crap, but being anti-competitive is a nogo by law everywhere.

South Korea is just the start of the saga.
So anticompetitive by partnering with 100s of thousands of developers that could never have broken into the market before the App Store and would have paid thousands a year in fees to then only get 30% of the profits. Apple should propose a return to the status quo in 2007. Then see how fast these people loose their minds.
