4.7 inch = iPhone mini
5.5 inch = iPhone Air

Would fit with the iPad naming convention...

Or to fit with MacBooks

4.7 inch = iPhone Air
5.5 inch = iPhone Pro

But I find it hard to believe they'd move away from the numbering... But they did with the iPad I suppose.

The Macbook naming convention is not Pro and Air, it's Pro 13"/15" and Air 11"/13". The two iPhones are not two different classes of devices, so Pro and Air would not make sense. Air and Mini would be plausible, as would iPhone 4.7 and iPhone 5.5. An iPhone (or iPad) Pro would only make sense if they introduced a new class of device, for example something with an active digitizer, or all the new models (both sizes) are pros and the repackaged old model isn't. All that said, it seems like they plan on continuing with their current numbering convention for now.

Why can't they just both be called iPhone 6 like how all MacBook pros are MacBooks pros and all iMacs are iMacs regardless of size?

Because it's easier for people to remember. It's not just 'the bigger' iPhone, it's iPhone 6+. Trust me, it matters when dealing with service providers or even just with the Apple store.

(This is assuming that Apple does this, but tbh it would make sense.)

It may make sense to service providers, but that's the only people who will have a clue.

Apple should just run through from A to Z with names and numbers.... :)

There u go Apple fans....

My guess is they'll dump it. I don't think it's proved particularly popular. I get the feeling they will either use the iPhone 5 or 5S as the "budget" model. I originally thought they might bring out an iPhone 6 with 4" screen but as there have been no leaks about it, it's obviously not that.

By simply putting a A8 inside a revised 5s, they could have their 4 inch phone with a significicant upgrade without any leaks at all :) and it would take little engineering to do so.

I say call them the iPhone 6, I have a iMac and it's not called the iMac Plus.

Yup... Apple *never* uses "Plus." RIIIIIGHHHT

My families first computer was a Mac Plus, although the one you have pictured seams to have had some upgrades, don't remember ours having USB ports :p

Over the years, bigger screen sizes have been a marketing ploy in order to fit more hardware into devices. Public bought into it with no questions….

I don't remember earlier rumors, but will the 5.5" have more/better hardware over the 4.7" (Like Galaxy Note vs. S5)?

Cool. Just mere hours away guys. And I've been asked "do you know when the iPhone 6 comes out" a record 28 times today lol. Truth is, yes I know when it comes out. I just can't say it

It was only one person who said it. Either way, maybe that was acceptable in the 80s for a desktop computer, but it's unfitting for a smartphone in 2014.

Why is it unfitting? I don't understand the hold up with nomenclature. It's just s name. They're already all over the place. The average consumer wont think "damn that's a throwback". It will just be the larger phone. Done.

I... Don't get it?

All I get from this is that you want to call it the iPhone Obese so that, like in your "comparison" to a woman asking if she looks fat in something, your iPhone will slap you, cry, spite eat a box of chocolate, and cut you off in the bedroom for a while?

no...

but that was funny :D

If the 4.7 is dumbed down from the 5.5, you could call the 5.5 the Iphone 6 and the 4.7 the Iphone 6-

I don't think they'll call "mini" an iPhone bigger than last year's model.
iPad mini is a good name, since the original iPad was 9.7'' and 7.99 is the mini version of it.
My guess is iPhone 6 and maybe, if is announced today, iPhone 6+

I know that nobody cares, but I'll let you know that I'm going to stick with my iPhone 5 for at least one more year, simply because it works p e r f e c t l y. :) When my iPhone 4 was 2 years old, it was painfully slow compared to the newer models, but I absolutely don't have this feeling with the i5, it's plenty fast even 2 years after. And seeing that Apple actually made pretty nice adjustments to the i5 with the i5S, I have the feeling that it's a good idea to wait a year until every possible glitch is smoothed out with the i6S (?). Yes, there were flaws unfortunately with the i5, which got corrected in the 5S ("scuffgate", purple spots on the camera lens, power button failure). But anyway, of course I'm curious about the keynote today.

Apple is not concerned with market share. They're concerned with profit which has very little to do with market share in the current mobile device sales environment.

Market share is intimately tied to the long-term health and profitability of Apple. Without market share, iOS and Apple wither.

Because it sounds cheesy by itself, regardless of whether or not Apple has used the name before. I don't know if the consumers will care about the phone having a bad name anyway. Better than "Droid Bionic" at least.
