Why can't we drop the numbering system for iPhones yet? The iPad names are great now. (Hoping they won't call the next revision: iPad Air 2, otherwise we're back to the old style again.)

Yehh, I agree. There's no real need to add numbers to the names anymore.
I mean the MacBook's don't have a number. Such as MacBook Air which has been MacBook Air since the beginning.
iPad Air should only be differentiated by its year of release same as the MacBooks.

So if someone wants to buy the latest iPhone and Apple still have the previous years phone on the market then customers can simply ask for say the 2014 iPhone or the 2013 iPhone.

But then when you look back at cell phone names over the decades they have been based on model numbers, such as the Nokia mobiles of old.
In a way, using a simple numbering naming convention makes it easier to identify the phone (or tablet) and makes it easier to remember that number too. I could never remember the model number of my Nokia mobiles. Too many digits. Heh heh....

And the 3" version they introduce next year will be the iPhone mini? We can dream... athough that's a boring thing to dream about...

All the people clamoring for the "plus" were probably previously convinced that the iPhone size was perfect and Samsung's larger models were too big.

And I bet a few of them will do a roundabout again once they actually own one and use it daily.

Sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error before you find one that works best. Take me, for example. I've concluded that I prefer a 4" over 4.7" and iPad Air over smaller tablets including the mini retina and 7" Android.

I would like them to be named......

*Drummmm roollllllll***

iPHONE 6c
iPHONE 6E

Or

iPHONE E
iPhonePhone

Thank you very much.

I love you all!

... the correct nomenclature for the new iPhone generation will be:

iPhone 6 (4.7''); iPhone 6s (4.7'') & iPhone Air (5.5")
