This was bound to happen. However I think that at least to me, the biggest downfall of the iPad is the software. That is where Apple really needs to innovate. iOS 9 needs to be huge. Split screen Multitasking, widgets, etc. all need to be a focus for the iPads.

Personally I don't care about how many screens it can split into or how many more popup widget and crap it can show. I'd rather they fix it so that I know what to click on and when. The number of times I have to tell non-Pro users, "yes that's a button" or "I know it doesn't make sense, but tap it anyway" is getting ridiculous. I'm also getting tired of "buttons" showing up in all four corners of the screen. Edit, Cancel, OK, Share "buttons" pop up all over the place with no consistency. From iOS7 on iOS looks like a joke.

I don't think the market shrinking, I believe it's just too saturated now and like the iPhone consumers are buying tablets about every 2-3 years. Otherwise you see no huge leaps in innovation.

I have a feeling that many cheaper tablets are bought and played with for the first few days (perhaps a couple of weeks) and then end up going untouched for large chunks of time.

So true.

Most people will either get a better tablet or not one as all depending on how muck they really use it.

Graph is wrong

The last 2 data points are repeated. If you remove them, you'll see that the graph hasn't flatlined. Rather, Apple is poised for another 4th quarter surge, same as the previous 3 years depicted in the graph.

A friend of mine first got acer iconia it was dead after few month then bought samsung tab and dead after a year now she said she will buy just ipad the only reason she didnt buy ipad since the first time is the high price but now she sees the different

Exactly because Samsung's tablets are so successful with all those features which is why they are currently ranked lower than Apple on this list. ;)

Gotta love the free market, competition and capitalism. Looks like Apple's cell phone OS on a tablet is showing its age.

No one is doing that. Not enough to justify a slip in the iPad.

people are fed up with using their ipad as an expensive toilet read? :)

for me, two reasons:

ios 8 is not professional enough

ipad mini got beaten by the lame stick

I think the iPad is professional enough . . . . . and by that I mean it is capable of doing some heavy lifting geared toward web usage and document handling.

I think it needs more RAM, it needs to be much speedier, and it needs real multitasking. The latter would be an iOS9 fix hopefully.

Ios 7/8 sucks is why

Yup. I have a feeling that the slight decrease is Apple's "tablet customer satisfaction" is more of the fact that Apple's latest iOS 7 and 8 were not better optimized for Apple's iPads. The focused too damn much on a better experience on the iPhones! But they didn't do much to optimize the experience in Apple's own tablets.

If I look at my mothers iPad one and look at my iPad Air 2, I dont see much innovation. Sure it has become faster and thinner and the OS has new colors

Buy else? Not much that makes you scream THATS NEEEWWWWW

When I look at my brothers Samsung Tab 1 and my Samsung Pro 12" it's a all new World compared to the first models

Apple still makes what I buy. But they don't innovate anymore. See Apple Watch. What A boring device compared to Galaxy Gear S. And typing on iOS is A pain. My Android suggest words for fast typing. Also in Danish - they have been for 5-6 years

Come on Apple ##

Zero tablet optimization for the last two years of iOS on tablets

3x3 folder grid on 10 inch screen LOL
No multitasking LOL

I'll echo some other comments.

Tablets aren't on the same buying cycle as phones and other devices. I'm still (shocking to some I'm sure) still enjoying my original iPad. I do have a Nexus 7 (2013) because I wanted another tablet at a smaller size. However, I'll likely use my Apple iPad at the larger size until it dies or the few apps I use are no longer working.

My phone I update regularly. Tablet - not so much.

This is also my "argument" against Apple integrating their Apple TV into an actual TV. Upgrade cycles are much longer...

The biggest problem with tablet is that you have to hold it in hand.

Until Apple and others show people that it is much better to have an accessory holding tablet while in use, tablet will remain a marginal device.

I learned this after first few hours using iPad 3.

It does not matter how thin or light it is, holding it to play games, do crossword or watch Netflix is cumbersome and tiresome.

I use my iPad 3 a lot, but holding/supporting with hand is rarely done except to transport from room to room in house. Okay, I use it in toilet - no more than 5 minutes ;)

Apple continues to rank among the world's top tablet manufacturers both in customer satisfaction and shipments, according to reports released today by J.D Power and IDC although the company is showing some signs of weakness as lower-cost competitors gain momentum and consumers look for more innovation in Apple's tablet lineup. Apple fell slightly behind Amazon in J.D. Power's semiannual customer satisfaction survey, while the company's lead in worldwide tablet shipping volume continues to shrink.

Apple's share declining is not surprising as the low end market grows. Apple has never been there and probably won't ever be there. Their sales seems to follow the normal pattern of pre-new model notification drop off and is within what appears to be normal variations.

Since cost is one factor I would not be surprised to see it be the reason for a lower satisfaction score than Amazon because you can't get a $100 or so iPad.

Admittedly the iPad 3 is heavy, in between the 2 and the 1. It's twice as heavy as the Minis. I went from a 3 to a Mini Retina and it's completely changed the way I use it. Now I hold it in one hand while reading all the time.

My guess is sales are lame because the greatest market growth is in midsized tablets, yet Apple chooses to gimp the Mini.

The Mini costs almost twice as much as many competitors. It needs a display that looks almost twice as good, because that is what consumers see when they look at a tablet.

Touch ID is a nice feature but nobody will spend an extra one or two hundred bucks for it. Colors are insignificant since most people use a case. That glued Touch ID button makes me think Apple panicked and really have no idea what to do. So sad...

Why doesn't anybody mention the RAM/processor and Apple's complete disregard for how much is necessary to handle their operating system?

Sometimes for fun, I open Samsung.com and Apple.com in two tabs of Safari on my iPad mini and switch the tabs back and forth and watch the pages reload.
I will never be comfortable working on my iPad because it's a piece of *****.
It's not a solid machine that can handle the tasks with a 512MB memory stick. It constantly freezes and apps are constantly crashing. I won't upgrade because the newer models aren't much better. I want to see quad-core processors and 4GB memory cards and then Apple will see some satisfaction.

And stop asking for features the units can't handle. Sure side-by-side multitasking sounds nice but it'll only be considered when Apple makes hardware upgrades and I'm not talking about A9 and iOS 9.

I can't help but feel my iPad was a complete ripoff (64GB/3G).

JD Power rankings favor cheap tablets rather strongly. Amazon tablets are NOT good. You can buy a Kindle Fire HD for $60 on eBay. They are one thing: cheap. And you have ads on the screen to subsidize the $139 price for the 7 incher. 8GB on a tablet? People complain 16GB for iPad is too low. Sorry, if you give too much weight to price in a survey, then you miss the point. People are willing to pay more for better stuff.

So you're saying the A7 is the same as the A8X and 1GB RAM is the same as 2GB RAM ?

No, But A8X and 2 GB RAM is nothing more than last years A7 and 1GB RAM. Yes they are improvements. But there are no justifications for these improvements. A8X - what for? This year, there was nothing that really pushed the Concept of the iPad forward imo.

People are waiting for more profound improvements, like split-screen multitasking or even pen input.

It's happening because iPads are lasting longer than iPhones and aren't switched as much. New buyers are entering the market on Kindle Fires because they are cheaper. I think parents also tend to buy their kids Fires because of the price difference.

The iPad mini 2 at $299 is important as are the improvements made in the Air 2 (arguably the biggest upgrade to the iPad line ever). I think Apple will pull back some of the lost marketshare in the holiday quarter with their new releases and then dazzle us with iOS 8.3 (iPad specific features) and an iPad Pro next Spring.

*crosses fingers*

Exactly. That's why I returned my iPad Air several months ago after using it for a couple of weeks. It feels plastic and a cheap product. The obsession with thinness has gone too far. I still have iPads 4 and a 2 in house and use them every day.

I have bought a new ipad air 2 only because Best Buy gave me $260 trade in for my ipad 2. I not excited about it and it feels so much cheaper than my old one just because the old one withstood so much abuse with no signs of wear and tear. The new one feels cheap.

If only they'd put a larger battery and a darn SD slot into the damn things.
(no, the Apple Store SD reader does not work as advertised, we need a built-in slot!) This obsession with thinness is driving me to anorexia.:)
