Those low end tablets are all Android-based, which is why Apple *should* be concerned about market share. It is baffling to see them just let Android grow in usage.

I would imagine the next iPad gets MacOS. Hell, Yosemite looks like iOS (vice versa?) already, and looks like it could be operated through touch.

Nice try at trolling.
Who's trolling? The numbers speak volumes. iOS is showing its age regardless of all the lipstick they put on it.

My my, you fanboys do get all riled up. Keep in mind I didn't write the article nor did I single-handidly cause Apple's market share to drop.

Not likely. If it does they will have to either use Intel processors and lose compatibility with all iPad apps or they use a new version of OS X for ARM and lose all current OS X apps. There is no way they will release an iPad running Mac OS X

Absolutely true. Different user experience and product expectations. Now if the iPad eventually becomes as powerful as a desktop system, and it will happen, then the sales will begin to climb again as consumers are offered a new choice at that higher product level.

I agree although I think iPads are powerful enough now for that to happen. I think the real issue is they are nowhere near as capable as a traditional laptop for productivity. No matter of software can fix the problem of replacing traditional mouse/ keyboard with a touchscreen.

Yeah, because this is the same thing that's been happening quarter after quarter. People just keep buying cheap tablets and not using them. They must have so much disposable money to keep doing that.

Maybe they keep them in the same place with all of those shipped buy not sold Android phones? :D

I think it's interesting to see that tablets aren't taking off the way pundits imagined they would. The onslaught of phablets seemed to slow tablet adoption significantly. That and perhaps stagnating development in tablet software. Until non-Surface tablets like the iPad can be complete laptop replacements, theyll contibue to be serious niche devices.

I worked at a telecom (now defunct) where we got the highest JD Power customer satisfaction rating, their little trophy, and bragging rights in all the trade rags.

The thing is, these surveys are sponsored (we sponsored this particular one) and the sponsor gets to provide a list of customers they want surveyed. So of course we provided only our A-list customers. Who knows where the customers for the competition came from. I'm not saying these surveys aren't valuable, but they don't tell the whole story in my opinion.

I care little about the market share. I care alot about a 2million dip in devices sold.

I think the iPad is a great tablet and I use it more than my computer for many functions. I hope that the new iPad will bring back sales, HOWEVER, (and I have been saying this alot for the last year or so) Microsoft got it right with the keyboard cover and Android got it right with true multi-tasking (well 2 apps at a time right). Whether Apple fixes these two issues or not, I think will determine the future of the device. Everything else about the iPad seems perfect to me (especially since I just upgraded from the 3 to the Air 2 -- huge improvement), but these two items will quickly become deal breakers when I look to upgrade my iPad in about 3 years (becasue this is more of a laptop investment than a phone investment)

If you are correct about the absence of a keyboard cover hurting the iPad, then surely they've lost sales to Microsoft. And yet, Microsoft doesn't even make the chart - they are somewhere in the "Others" category I guess. MS *must* sell their own keyboard because, unlike Apple, they don't have 3rd-party companies chomping at the bit to sell iPad accessories. Apple has no reason to sell their own iPad keyboard, and in fact, it's better they don't. Keeps accessory makers happy.

Also, have you tried using the split-screen multitasking on Samsung tablets? It only works with Samsung-made apps, which are junk. It over-promises and WAY under-delivers. That being said, if you see where Apple went with "Extensions" in iOS 8, it's clear that they are trying to make it easier for apps to talk to each other. Whether that means they'll have some way for an app to open a window on top of another app or next to it remains to be seen.

No, But A8X and 2 GB RAM is nothing more than last years A7 and 1GB RAM. Yes they are improvements. But there are no justifications for these improvements. A8X - what for? This year, there was nothing that really pushed the Concept of the iPad forward imo.

People are waiting for more profound improvements, like split-screen multitasking or even pen input.

I actually think apple may be headed in that direction. 2gb of ram may support the multitasking, and I think mail markup from Yosemite might eventually come to the iPad. A pen would be useful there.

JD Power rankings favor cheap tablets rather strongly. Amazon tablets are NOT good. You can buy a Kindle Fire HD for $60 on eBay. They are one thing: cheap. And you have ads on the screen to subsidize the $139 price for the 7 incher. 8GB on a tablet? People complain 16GB for iPad is too low. Sorry, if you give too much weight to price in a survey, then you miss the point. People are willing to pay more for better stuff.

I thought the same thing! I'm sure JD Power could get the rankings to turn out anyway they want by re-weighting their satisfaction categories. Amazon ranks "highest in the ease of operation [22% weighting] and cost [11%] factors." "Apple and Samsung...perform particularly well in the performance [28%] and styling and design [17%] factors."

Wins at ease of operation, because unless you want to read or watch media available from Amazon, there are very few other apps on the Kindles to be confused by...

Ignoring the other factors, price is 11% weighting. If you assume the Amazon beat the Apple devices by something like 300 points (just a wild guess), then that alone is a 33 point advantage to Amazon. With that much "price" bias, they still only come in 3 points "ahead" of Apple!

----------

I suspect the satisfaction drop will be mainly due to the recent bugs.

The survey was conducted between March and August of 2014. Recent bugs (e.g. iOS 8-ish) would have played no part.

If Samsung and Apple repeat their number changes again Y/Y, Samsung will overtake Apple for #1 in sales.

Yeah, because this is the same thing that's been happening quarter after quarter. People just keep buying cheap tablets and not using them. They must have so much disposable money to keep doing that.

No one is doing that. Not enough to justify a slip in the iPad.
.

Look at who made market share gains. RCA, Lenovo, Other (thrown in everyone else). Do you think these companies are selling high end tablets to get those gains? Even Samsung has tablets priced at $250.

The user experience is piss poor when using a cheap hipstreet, RCA, Le pan, Lenovo, Acer tablet.

Do you think Samsung and MSFT are selling their $500+ tablets like crazy and that is what is eating at Apple's market share?

iPad users seem to get some heavy usage out of their tablets and perhaps people are simply not upgrading as quickly. They see no reason to ditch their very capable tablet.

at home we still use our iPad 2 and are in no hurry to buy another one. It is still working like it did the day we bought it. We use it primarily for browsing the web, which is what I think most people use it for and it does that just fine.

I think that's the problem, people are perfectly fine with their older ipads. And as far as the higher specs on the new ones? Sure when my old one breaks I will enjoy the benefits on a new one, but really, most of us who need to work on something that requires higher specs, (not including games) we use our laptop or desktop.
