The amount of people getting offended because their cases are no longer made from dead animals is absolutely insane.
It was long overdue that Apple makes a change to vegan leather and I'm so glad they finally did. Go Vegan!
(...ready for your downvotes. I hope my comment offends all of you so much who think killing animals for your damn pleasure is the right thing to do).
PETA anon account absolutely doing the most

they should make part of the case with recycled wood then to have that faux leather pressed and bonded into it so you’d get a similar patina.

I don’t understand why people care if vegan leather is plastic or not. What matters is that it feels, lasts and looks just as leather — but without cruelty in the process.

I was waiting for the day Apple would go vegan with its leather case and here it is 🌱
Plastic is worse for the environment than leather. Leather is from cows slaughtered for beef production. The leather either gets used or in some cases thrown out. I prefer using all the parts of the cow we don’t eat.

Now if they want to go vegan, just avoid oil as the material they’re going with. Everyone should know plastic comes from oil. Plastic takes many millennia to break down in landfalls. Whether it’s an individual use plastic or something used in a case, it ends up in the same landfill and doesn’t breakdown. And most sources of recycled plastic are ******** which brings us right back to the leather source but in a different manner!

Research. You're right, that wasn't hard at all 🙂
Citing a random article that supports your own opinion, is not research.

Research means, you have to go into the topic by yourself and read production related articles, really understanding the topic and filter material related facts from opinions. All you do is gaslighting. Well done.

I don't eat meat and don't support the slaughtering of animals for any reason, so I'm in for them moving away from leather.

Here is a guaranteed 100% lock leak from yours truly...
These alt leather cases will carry the exact same price as the real thing.
Take that to the bank.
They care about the environment as long as you pay for it.
Hmm, I guess I didn't see in the announcement any new requirement that you buy them. I guess I missed that part.

Seriously, if you don't like it, just buy one of the hundred other brands of cases.

Did Apple officially announce the new cases and say they're made from plastic? Because not all faux or vegan leathers are made from plastics. And I also missed the part where they announced you have to buy a case from them in order to get an iPhone going forward.

Society today - people just like to bitch about anything and everything without any knowledge on the matter.

Don’t know what Apple will be using, but “vegan leather” tends to be stuff like cork material. It’s very thin, durable, and doesn’t look like cow hide, though it has a look of its own.

My phone & iPad are both covered with the stuff.
If these are cork "leather" I will totally buy one. If they're vinyl, probably not.

That said, I opted for the Apple silicone case last time, and so far it's not wearing very well at all. Lots of chipping/flaking around the perimeter of the screen, and I'm pretty gentle on my phone, and never take it out of its case.

Rumors suggest Apple will not release leather cases for the iPhone 15 lineup, and today images were shared online claiming to show what an alternative leather-like case from Apple may look like, with leakers again suggesting they will use vegan materials instead of leather, but with a different feel and texture.

iphone-15-alternative-leather-case.jpg

Serial leakers Majin Bu and @DuanRui both shared case images on Twitter (now X) separately sourced from Weibo and allegedly based on Apple's official leather-alternative cases. The cases are said to be made of a patchwork of two materials that are more eco-friendly with a smaller carbon footprint than cowhide leather, although there is little other information available at the current time. The colors shown are not believed to be representative of any official Apple case.

Claims that Apple will not offer new leather iPhone cases this year have previously come from three separate sources, so the rumor appears to be worth taking seriously. Apple first released a series of leather cases in 2013 alongside the iPhone 5S. A refreshed selection of colors has accompanied every new ‌iPhone‌ model since then, featuring minor design refinements, such as the addition of aluminum buttons and MagSafe.
Apple is likely to release its new lineup of official iPhone 15 cases alongside the iPhone 15 series, which is expected to be announced at an event set to occur on September 12.

Absolutely moronic.

Pleather or vegan leather as they like to market this garbage is way more harmful for the environment it is made with oil, there is a huge supply of leather this stuff is just being disposed of daily.

Leather lasts and can be reconditioned this garbage the minute that it starts to come apart it goes into the landfill

Really disappointed with Apple.

Their leather case was the only case I bought for iPhone now I'm going to go to somebody else.

What Is Vegan Leather?

Vegan leather is artificial, synthetic, or “faux” leather made from agricultural waste products and sustainable biomaterials. It can also be made from polymers like polyurethane and other recyclable materials. Vegan leather is an alternative to animal leather and is made without using any animal products. It's environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and animal-cruelty-free.

What Is Vegan Leather Made of?

Raw materials for vegan leather usually come from agricultural waste sources. Some of the materials most commonly used to manufacture vegan leather are:
Polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride. Synthetic leather is made using recycled plastic materials like polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride. Many people choose to avoid this kind of vegan leather, as its manufacture contributes to the depletion of fossil fuels.
Cork. Cork is a great alternative to plastics and animal skin for making vegan leather. Manufacturers can even get it from corkwood trees without damaging the trees.
Cactus. Cactus is another innovative animal-skin replacement used to make vegan leather.
Kombucha cellulose or SCOBY.Kombucha, or kelp tea, is a fermented sweet drink made using a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, also called a SCOBY. The bacteria and yeast share nutrients and ferment the tea. Over time, they multiply and form a mass of cellulose, called a “mother.”
The mother floats on top of the liquid and takes the shape of the container. Within a few weeks, it grows as much as 10 millimeters thick. The mass of cellulose is harvested to make new batches of kombucha. However, it can also be used to make fully biodegradable leather.
After harvesting the mother, manufacturers wash, oil, and air-dry it to obtain a flexible, leathery sheet. They then cut the material in strips and stitch, glue, or mold it into new shapes.
Mushroom.Mushrooms grow through a network of threads called mycelium. Manufacturers use it to make vegan leather. The mycelium grows within a few weeks and can be easily processed using mild acid, alcohol, and vegetable dyes to modify it. The material is then compressed, dried, and textured for use. Mushroom or mycelium leather closely resembles animal leather in appearance and strength.
Pineapple. Pineapple leather or Pinatex is vegan leather made using natural pineapple leaf fibers, petroleum resin, and thermoplastic polyester.
Yeast collagen. Biofabricated vegan leather can be made using the skin protein collagen obtained from yeast in a laboratory.
Silicone. Silicone leather is made from refined silicone material. It is similar to plastic-based materials, but more eco-friendly and durable.
Bacterial cellulose and agricultural waste. Similar to SCOBY, bacterial cellulose can also be harvested, dried, and used to make vegan leather. Agricultural waste like maple leaf pulp, apple peels, and fruit pulp can be good sources of bacterial cellulose.

That’s simply wrong. Vegan leather can be made e.g. from plant based materials, mushroom/fungus materials, leftovers from the food industry and many more. Please do a proper research before commenting fake facts.
Isn't that a cruel thing to do to plants? At least a cow can try to run away. Plants are doomed because they are rooted to the ground. ;)

1). "Vegan Leather" is made from plastic. You know, petroleum products made from oil pumped from those ever so clean oil wells.
2). "Real Leather" comes from the leftover hides of food animals slaughtered for your dining pleasure.
Unless you only consume grass grown without cultivation (uses that bad old oil) and wear natural rope belts and hand woven homespun and hemp sandals, your are a hypocrite.
I recently met somebody with a mushroom leather purse from Stella McCartney, and I never would have guessed it... the material felt so soft and supple, yet durable. It made for a good conversation starter.

Was going to post the same. People are very short minded when it comes to understanding "the circle of life" for many industries. Coal power plants don't just provide the energy needed to charge your Tesla, they produce many byproducts used in a variety of products; https://www.uky.edu/KGS/coal/coal-for-combustionbyproducts.php.

BBQ'ing would be a lot different today if it weren't for Henry Ford; https://www.kingsford.com/our-story/kingsford-history/.

So how does this recycle and how does Apple make sure it doesn’t end up in a landfill? I know the current cases have a mixture of materials including a plastic foundation and I ‘m not sure the way the leather is treated means it biodegrades that well with the plastic parts left over.

Cases seem to be a default for many people given the cost of repair/replacement of an iPhone or used on mounts for cycling etc. A shame they need to be used in the first place but here we are.

Well here is a chance for 3rd party supplier to scoop in and bring us the good leather cases back.
If they’re MagSafe compatible, they won’t be “good”. Before MagSafe, the leather cases actually had some thickness and suppleness to them. The cases now have to be so thin (to support MagSafe) that it really doesn’t matter that it’s leather. It’s effectively just “different from silicon” now.

Glad to see Tim Cooks Apple getting out of the leather case market. The last few years the leather quality has been utter garbage. I work with leather and have taken apart an Apple case and their "Genuine Leather" is 0.1mm of corrected grain leather glued on a plastic shell with a faux suede interior. If any substantive real leather was being used it shouldn't be wasted on such a **** product manufactured by the tens of millions a year.

Leave it to actual leather workers and smaller companies making quality products.

You made a few valid points. Let me share some additional info:
  • there's also a lot of leather production that doesn't originate from beef production by-products
  • veganism is more about harm reduction than absolutism... meaning if there's a less harmful alternative, we should choose it... even though there's no perfect answer, it doesn't mean we shouldn't try to do better
