Im curious what everyone thinks about great alternative brands that make nice leather cases?
I got this one from Amazon. It's very nice genuine leather. Fits my 12 mini really well. There are other brands available. Some key words you want to look for in the product description are "top grain" or "full grain."

Glad to see Tim Cooks Apple getting out of the leather case market. The last few years the leather quality has been utter garbage. I work with leather and have taken apart an Apple case and their "Genuine Leather" is 0.1mm of corrected grain leather glued on a plastic shell with a faux suede interior. If any substantive real leather was being used it shouldn't be wasted on such a **** product manufactured by the tens of millions a year.

Leave it to actual leather workers and smaller companies making quality products.
Any suggestions for leather cases for the iPhone. I prefer metal buttons, and no exposed plastic, if possible. Thanks!

"Vegan leather" is plastic. It's pleather with better marketing.

Leather is just hamburger wrapper with better marketing ;)

Sorry I'm being sarcastic. But really, the material cost of these things is probably pennies whichever material is used.

Also some information about vegan leathers, from a vegan leather company - undoubtedly expressed in the most positive light possible. All your vegan leathers are basically just x product on a plastic substrate.

How is Apple leather made?

Apple leather, also known as AppleSkin, is a bio-based material made using the leftover pomace and peel from the fruit juice and compote industry.
Originating from the region of Bolzano in northern Italy, the fabric is created by first taking the recovered apple waste and reducing it to a powder. Once processed, it is sent to a factory located in Florence, where it is combined with polyurethane and coated onto a cotton and polyester canvas.

Is plastic in vegan leathers bad?

As it currently stands, the addition of a plastic plays a pivotal role in the durability of bio-based leathers. Without it, the materials wouldn’t endure the general wear of every day life, and extending the life cycle of a product is an incredibly important aspect of sustainability.
Whether it's grape leather, corn leather, pineapple leather or even mushroom leather, a small amount of plastic is required. Plant-based polyurethanes are progressing however these still contain 30% petroleum-based PU in order to ensure longevity and stability.
As technology progresses, the reliability on plastics will reduce significantly. For now though, it is a key ingredient and will ensure your Oliver Co. products last.

I've gone with a naked iPhone for the last couple of years so I can't recommend any specific brands.

You might want to search for a specific type of leather, ie. Horween Leather, Cordovan Leather, or even just Veg Tan Leather and then try to narrow down based on design and features you want.

If you want to closely replicate an Apple case you might have to look at a larger company like Nomad who have enough scale to get or replicate MagSafe and have custom metal buttons made.

Agreed, the slightest drop would cause a big gash to be torn in the leather. I guess it’s better than your phone dropping while naked but for $60 I expect better durability in a case.

Same goes for the silicone cases: in just a few months the corners begin to peel off from the friction of being put into / taken out of your jeans pocket. Unacceptable IMO for a $50 case.

I really hope that the new vegan leather cases have better durability and great feel 🙂
Meh, although phone cases shouldn’t be that expensive, it’s different when you put it into perspective; who puts an +1000€$£ device in a 60 somewhat case.

But the quality is bad. Same with their silicon cases. My AliExpress cases lasted longer and remained better looking.

But then again, you are asking to be robbed when you purchase Apple cases/accessoires that are not tech. Even the tech is up for discussion since it often uses old hardware.

The OS and their own chips make up a bit but it’s still heavily overpriced. But then again, people can decide not to buy. Whatever goats their floats

I got this one from Amazon for my 12 mini. Fits very well and has the built in metal buttons you are asking for.

Andar has great leather cases and started doing closed bottom on the 14 models. I have their iPad Pro case and it’s high quality leather. I will probably go with them for the 15 pro

The Apple leather cases have been terrible quality for a good few years. One of the worst Apple products.

I’m for this if the quality is better.
How so? this are the only cases I use I personally have never had a problem. Other then wear and patina which is expected with leather, I'm just curious what problems others encounter?

Cows worldwide are happy. Maybe human skin could be the next product material. Get a real feel for the process.

Sounds like more cheese coming from CA then?

I love leather. I also love steak. If I'm going to get steak, then they may as well use the hide, too. I'm wondering what all the processes and chemicals are that required in order to turn plants into something as resilient as actual cowhide?

Apple can’t do anything to make sure it doesn’t end up in a landfill. People make the decision to put stuff into landfills every day and I doubt very many of them contact the company that made the product asking for permission.
Well I don’t think that is correct, people dispose of their items in recycling hoping that the items will be responsibly processed. Our taxes pay for this.

How about all of the processs and chemicals used to turn a calves skin in to leather?
