Apple's Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter does not work with iPhones and iPads that have been updated to iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5, according to several users across the MacRumors Forums, Apple Support Community, and Reddit.

The adapter has a USB-A port for connecting a camera, microphone, or other USB-powered accessory to an iPhone or iPad, along with a Lightning port for charging the iPhone or iPad. As of iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5, however, affected users say the adapter no longer powers any devices connected to both of the ports.

The issue is likely due to a software bug that will need to be addressed in a future iOS version, but the underlying cause is unknown. Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 16.6 to developers today, but the update is likely many weeks away from being released, so an iOS 16.5.1 update might be necessary if the company wishes to fix the bug sooner.

Apple released iOS 16.5 on Thursday following seven weeks of beta testing. The update is a relatively minor one, with additions including a Sports tab in the Apple News app, a new Pride Celebration wallpaper honoring the LGBTQ+ community and culture, and bug fixes related to CarPlay, Screen Time, and Spotlight. Apple is expected to announce iOS 17 with bigger changes during its WWDC keynote on June 5.

Maybe it needs a firmware update like the MagSafe to USB adapter which was issued in February.

I hope that is the case, but so far no new firmware update prompt has appeared. I've already updated the adapter to the latest firmware (version 1.0.5) that was released back in early 2017.

I tried downgrading back to iOS 16.4.1, but that failed with an Error 75.

Rare issues like this are why I almost always wait for a few weeks before updating my devices.
That's good advice that I typically follow. I'm still running Monterey on my primary machine because I've been affected by Apple breaking SMB file sharing in minor macOS updates. I felt like I should upgrade to iOS 16.5 due to the actively exploited security issues, but I immediately encountered this camera adapter bug.

It's so frustrating that they don't push the new security fix out as a Rapid Security Response. Now, unless the fleet of users I manage holds off on updating for days/weeks, all of our iPads will be vulnerable.
You're right. Rolling those fixes out as a Rapid Security Response would have been better.

I use this at work for connecting an iPad to Ethernet. That's a bummer.
I use it for Ethernet as well. I wonder if connecting a powered hub between the USB Ethernet adapter and the camera adapter will work as a temporary workaround. But that wouldn't charge the iPhone or iPad.

Okay, strange?! I doubled check at my 13 Pro Max. I use the camera adapter with an audio USB stick to listen lossless music. I did it yesterday without knowing about the problem. I have no issues. Works fine.
Do you have power connected to the camera adapter? Can you verify that your phone is charging through the adapter?

I think the issue has to do with the camera adapter no longer passing power, so USB devices that don't require additional power may still work.
