Of course it doesn't. Because the EU killed all the Lightning devices due to their USB-C insanity. Just wait until they kill USB-C when they decide the whole world should adopt USB-D!
Why have standards, when you can buy this for the low-low price of EUR 3,91 ?

Correct. This happens every year. Software gets released and people say "why have there been so many bugs lately?" As if it's out of the norm. But I can point to some embarrassing bugs in every piece of software, including in the Forstall years.
The argument about Apple compared to many other tech has been that they make both the hardware and the software and therefore things are so much more stable. It is this claim I sometimes have a problem with – are things really that much better because of this? We’re talking about Apple’s own adapter in this case.

Also thinking about the DNS behavoiur changes between Monterey and Ventura that seems to be a bug as there is no info on why it should behave differently between the two OS versions.

I don’t know, but maybe be more humble about things? There are of course also a lot that works well. :)

Adapter doesn’t charge on iPads but on my iPhone 14 Pro it is fine. Could just be an iPad OS 16.5 issue?

Apple's Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter does not work with iPhones and iPads that have been updated to iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5, according to several users across the MacRumors Forums, Apple Support Community, and Reddit.

Apple-Lightning-to-USB-3-Camera-Adapter.jpeg

The adapter has a USB-A port for connecting a camera, microphone, or other USB-powered accessory to an iPhone or iPad, along with a Lightning port for charging the iPhone or iPad. As of iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5, however, affected users say the adapter no longer powers any devices connected to both of the ports.

The issue is likely due to a software bug that will need to be addressed in a future iOS version, but the underlying cause is unknown. Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 16.6 to developers today, but the update is likely many weeks away from being released, so an iOS 16.5.1 update might be necessary if the company wishes to fix the bug sooner.

Apple released iOS 16.5 on Thursday following seven weeks of beta testing. The update is a relatively minor one, with additions including a Sports tab in the Apple News app, a new Pride Celebration wallpaper honoring the LGBTQ+ community and culture, and bug fixes related to CarPlay, Screen Time, and Spotlight. Apple is expected to announce iOS 17 with bigger changes during its WWDC keynote on June 5.

I am listening to the music with using this adapter and Dragonfly DAC. It works. But it doesn’t charge iPad. iPad 16.5.

-Neither the EU not any other brand or manufacturer has a new “USB-D” like standard in the pipeline.

The whole idea behind forcing the USB-C I/O upon all consumer tech is the fact that cable CONNECTORS AND PORTS ARE 100% ARBITRARY and neither consumers nor cable/port technology gets more advanced if brands are free to shape the ports and connectors as they wish.

Please explain to us how a future “USB-D” would benefit from having different connectors and ports than the current USB-C standard.

How does a new connector shape and port that’s different from those found in USB-C offer better data transfer and charging? How?

The internals will change and be upgraded. But the cable ends and ports won’t because there’s no reason.

Apple itself has opted for USB-C for its most powerful and expensive products.

Don’t you think Apple would have done “Super Lightning” or some other proprietary b.s. for MacBooks and iPads if it actually had something more innovative and superior compared to Lightning?

Let the EU stop the outdated madness that is proprietary USB 2.0(Lightning) on iPhones!
Good lord. You might as well say that a computer will never need more than 640 KB!

I’m hoping that the post you were replying to was at least joking, but you don’t seem to be. The USB-IF will continue to work on the spec and I’m sure will continue to use the USB-C connector as long as they can, but it is almost inevitable that they will eventually move to another new connector. They merged Thunderbolt into the spec and this connector is nice and compact and reversible, but over time they traditionally move to more pins and a different form factor. This trend has been pretty consistent for 25 years.

As for ”neither consumers nor cable/port technology gets more advanced if brands are free to shape the ports and connectors as they wish”, there is more than 50 years of computer history proving that one wrong.

And your “Super Lightning” comment makes it sound like Apple aren’t a member of the USB-IF and have made no contributions to the actual design of USB-C. Thunderbolt was pretty much their “Super Lightning”.

I’m okay with them mandating USB-C as a standard connector, but it is an incredibly non-standard standard, considering the different signalling rates, PD levels, and e-chip versus non-chip versions of USB-C cables I’ve had to buy, so they are not simplifying quite as much as they think they are.

There are people here that have no idea what a USB-C standard is, or more importantly USB C, or at least, it’s standards are mostly a dogs breakfast.

Oops! Does their similarly constructed Lightning Digital AV Adapter work? This one:

Tested on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, and it worked after downloading firmware update.

I was met with the message, “Downloading accessory firmware. Your accessory will not function until the download completes.”

Interestingly, it also needed to download a firmware update on my iPhone 12 Pro. It feels as if it’s re-installing a driver on the iPhone itself instead of updating the actual firmware in the Lightning Digital A/V adapter.

I’m now wondering if this update broke this auto-download firmware update (driver update) mechanism for the Lighting to USB 3 Camera Adapter.

Some interesting tidbits:
-iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro are outputting Multich PCM 7.1 ch @ 48 kHz audio and 1920 x 1080p 60 hz YCbCr444 24 bit video (tested with Arrival and Alita: Battle Angel)

Just tried this with my iPhone 13 Pro and an audio interface connected to external power. It worked.

So I’m guessing that power is the issue? Before, the adapter was able to supply enough bus power, but now it can’t?

It very hard to understand why this bug was not discovered during the beta process. Seems with each passing year since Jobs left Apple, Apple’s OS releases are filled with many bugs. Apple doesn’t hire the best engineers anymore.
Who cares about a new OS every single year? Stop releasing versions for 3 or four years and focus on fixing bugs instead.

This was a bug present in 16.5 beta using my external desktop dac, however the only issue was my iPhone not charging. Data still pushed and I could listen to music.

I sent bug reports to Apple.

I assumed the CCK was faulty so I bought a replacement which ofc didn’t fix the issue.

Downgraded back to 16.4 non beta which fixed the problem.

However, now using public release 16.5 there’s no power and no data via the CCK so the problem is even worse.

Tbh it’s absurd that something as chunky and as antiquated as the CCK is needed for my use case which is solely to connect my iPhone via usb to my external dac.

Missing the iPad that I sold a while ago, it had usb-c which is a far more elegant solution.

I used to report these bugs too, but they simply don‘t care. Those issues need to be posted and published on news media like here because public coverage is the only thing that makes them move.

Love the people complaining that quality issues are due to Apple releasing major releases every year. In this case, Apple is releasing a minor update and breaking things. Would like to know what change that “had” to be made caused this bug. Maybe Apple should stop tweaking OS level stuff in minor releases.

I guess none of the beta testers use this adapter ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just pulled photos off of my camera a few weeks ago on a 16.5 beta. It wasn’t the same adapter as in the photo though. It was this one-

Maybe it was because my camera is self-powered?
