If I had to guess, the phone is somewhat smart about it. The actual "video" part is stored as a lower resolution because of the fact that it won't ever be uploaded elsewhere and so it can stay to the resolution of the screen of the device its on. Then you can likely still have HDR and all that active o the still image. Just a hunch.
It would actually be great if you could change the main image in the video. Sometimes you just miss the best moment by a fraction of a second. But that would require that all images in this 'video' (jpg sequence) use the full resolution.

As per my opinion, apple will create a folder with the same name as the image and will store a compressed video into the same. When user will use iMessage to send this image to any iOS device or will use a compatible service like Facebook, the image and the folder will be sent altogether, enabling live photo functionality at the receiving end.

It really helps getting to know few things about the product you buy before splashing that kind of money so I personally don't feel bad. I will go for 64GB and should be enough for me. 16GB is very low storage for this kind of tech, I agree.
The way Apple pitch their products is such that they are very simple to use/learn and that you don’t have to. These are supposed to be phones that your granny can use.

I agree the 16 should have gone to at least 32Gb if not drop it all together and have 64-128-256.

I'll be keeping my 5s for the next year and waiting for the 7, in the mean time if this works on my 5s I'll check it out but probably turn it off unless needed.

Didn't you watch the video? Geez, people don't read the copy or watch the attached videos either. Makes one wonder why Macroumors even bother.

Umm I did watch the keynote and nowhere did he mention anything about having live photos as your background. He mentioned it for the apple watch but not for iPhone which is why I asked. But thanks for your useless reply

For those of you who are complaining about 16GB iPhones... Apple knows about the situation very well. They just want more profit on their Phones. Can you imagine how much the profit would come down if they sell 32GB iPhones instead of 16GB phones? Almost half the people who would've bought the 64GB versions would rather buy the less expansive 32GB phones. There is no way Apple would go for that knowing they would make less money. Would you do that? I doubt that. Especially when people are buying them in droves. Apple makes 92% profit of the entire smartphone industry for a reason.

If I get twice the storage space occupied in a shot, I'd rather have twice the resolution and clarity rather than the excess stored being surrounding video. It's kind of like the imposition of Apple's idea of what constitutes a Kodak moment in every pic you take. Might as well get auto-inserted musical accompaniment ... Oops!

I am not talking about the ease of use. I am talking about the specifications that differentiate several models of iPhone when it comes to price. Knowing the cons and pros of one model compare to another.

If you did watch the keynote you would've seen the live image of the girl on the lock screen then?

Yep, very true. It's just a little frustrating when you consider all that BS rhetoric they give about 'making the best products in the world' and 'we only think about the user experience', and 'we don't ship junk/profits aren't important'. It's all rubbish.

16GB lol.

Apple please. There has to be at least one sane person who thought "we can't ship 16GB phones" inside those walls, right? RIGHT?

Do you really think it would be more "sane" if a capitalist company destroyes their own profits by making available a 32GB model and sell much less 64 GB models they get 100$ more revenue for?

no iphone 6 / 6 plus support then ! dam it

Looks like you can view them, but not take them. In fact, as the GM of iOS 9 beta has been released, we would be able to take them right now if it was supported on existing models. Though in theory, we should already be able to view any Live Photos on existing devices running iOS9 GM, if any existed out in the wild. It's a shame Apple haven't put any up on the Dev site.

Moron alert. When you stitch images together they aren't videos. Is a gif a video? No. You can't read so I'll spell it out again, unless you're calling PHIL Shiller a liar, " They're NOT videos". It's a new format. Geez, grow a brain will ya.

video |ˈvɪdɪəʊ| noun (pl.videos) 1 [ mass noun ] the recording, reproducing, or broadcasting of moving visual images. it's a great option for anyone looking to start using video to talk over the Net. [ as modifier ] : video equipment.2 a recording of moving visual images made digitally or on videotape. she could post videos of the event on the Internet. they sat down to watch a video. [ as modifier ] : a site on which people can post their own video clips.• a short film made by a pop or rock group to accompany a song. a pop video.• Brit. a video recorder. he set the video.• a video cassette: a blank video | [ as modifier ] : a video library | [ mass noun ] : the film will soon be released on video.

Video is an image sequence. Shoot 24 images per second and you'll get a movement. Of course since then it evolved into digital and all kinds of compressions and formats, but basics never changed.

So before and after live photo is effectively a video.

Every iPhone iteration outsold the previous one, it seems to me that the millions, the big numbers, really don't care about the storage base size. Like it or not, Apple is right about this. Their goal is to sell as much iPhones as possible, and even more. Number are on their side.

I personally think is a robbery, but it's my opinion. Apple shares low and high are not depending on my purchases.

No but it seems it's "I'm an annoying brat with no patience" day.

And yes, in the end, it's just a short video spanning 1.5 seconds before and after you've taken the photo.
Now they showed it taken with a phone that'sn ot moving, most likely on a tripod or something similar. I'd like to see what it does with someone with his hands shaking or soemthing :p

I've got a point-and-shoot camera that's a couple of years old and already allows you to do this (in fact I'm surprised people aren't pointing out that this is nothing new). It's the sort of thing you think sounds really cool until you try it and realise that there was a good reason you didn't take the photo any earlier - the "run up" time usually consists of a moving camera, the subject at a bad angle, the shot still being composed, subject picking their nose, you shouting "no, ignore me, keep looking at the monkeys" or "stop picking your nose".

Unless you make a conscious effort to plan the couple of seconds either side of the shutter press with as much attention as the photo itself, I predict disappointment here.

I think it would be more "sane" if a company dedicated to great products and technology (which they have, by the way), decide that upgrading the 16GB base storage introduced with the iPhone 3GS would be a pretty good idea.

Seeing as within the last 6 years: pictures take more space, apps are bigger, there are more apps available, the OS takes more space, software updates are larger, videos take more space, app caches are larger, and people install more apps by default.

The 6/6S is a lovely phone, and they're crippling it with the storage. They should have just done a modest base storage upgrade to 32GB with the iPhone 6, and nobody would have complained. Instead, by leaving it at 16GB, they've now put themselves in an awkward position where they can't do any upgrades without looking like they're backtracking or responding to user backlash.

All they had to do was make a 32/64/128GB tier with the 6. Nobody would have complained and Apple wouldn't come across as money-hungry hippos.

Why is this an iPhone 6S feature rather than an iOS 9 feature accessible for all supported models? I dont see why older phones wouldnt be able to do this.

Guys, can someone (maybe a developer) please explain to me why -if really not- the iPhone 6 and 6+ should not support the creation / capture of 'live photos'?
The article specifically states that they basically already capture everything up until the shot is taken but dump everything prior to that. So what's the deal?
a) insufficient specs?
or
b) this restriction makes a good reason for 6/6+ owners to upgrade.
Anyone?
