Some of his work was amazing, some not so much. I am still struck how long he took (or is taking) to fix the design of the awful butterfly keyboard. Good thing the amazing work far outweighs the failures. I feel Apple has been a bit stagnant lately though, so I'm excited to see what's next.

For all we know, the butterfly keyboard was the engineering team’s attempt to appease Ive’s desire for a thinner profile. And now Ive washed his hands off as the engineers are stuck trying to fix it. Wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the case. Remember antennagate? The engineers warned Jobs about the signal loss, yet Jobs sided with Ive, and the rest is history.

In hindsight, this article was right on the money and Gruber's "little birdies" were right on the money - https://www.macrumors.com/2016/11/23/jony-ive-speculation-role/

The key parts here:

During an episode of "The Talk Show" podcast posted last Friday, John Gruber mentioned that he had recently heard Ive has been "checked out or not as directly involved with product design" at Apple, and instead focused on architecture projects for its campuses and retail locations.

Following all of this, Gruber yesterday posted a new blog to clear up his original statement. He reiterated on the second and third-hand sources speaking of Ive's status in the company, stating that no one has directly mentioned Ive has stopped overseeing Apple's day-to-day product design, but what he's heard is from sources who "think" he has.

More like Timmy & Ive didn't want him & threw a hissyfit after Steve died which, coupled with that bullsheit "apology" that Forstall rightly refused to sign, signaled his doom with Tim's Golden Goose.
LOL, you think the original Apple Maps was so great that Forstall was blameless?
If you think so highly of Forstall, then list out his achievements post Apple. I mean a great person like him would do great even without Apple, right? Let’s see what they are. We can’t wait.

so nothing really changed. instead of getting paidby apple. he will charge apple the same salary, or more, and still do the same job for apple and Other companies as well, if they can afford him
Nah, it's extremely unlikely he'll still be actively involved in product design for Apple.

And while I agree that some dubious design choices were made over the last few years, I seriously doubt that things like the butterfly keyboard were Ive's brainchild. He's not an engineer. It was engineering who effed that one up. Also poor guidance by Cook. Apple should finally get rid of their old people's home in the board room, and the main culprit for all the late product launches, messed up quality control, prices hikes is Tom Cook. I just don't get how that guy is still working for that company.

And will Tim be in charge of the look and feel of future Apple products? It’s not totally unlikely. Maybe not directly but what the CEO holds beautiful will trickle down.

"If he truly does continue to work for Apple under his own consultancy, and they aren't just saying that to cushion the stock prices,"

This is Tim Cook's Apple, of course they're saying it to cushion the stock price. Cook is pro Wall Street as they come.

I could actually see them using him as a regular consultant, though.

Either way, good for both companies. This is exciting.

Jony has done some projects outside of Apple from time to time. His taste is pretty eclectic but most people only know him from his Apple products. He had to keep everything consistent under the Apple brand and that probably got boring as a designer. I'm interested in seeing a lot more variety in his work.

I heard his final design at Apple was the new card and he left with an ear to ear grin.

Meh, it’s time for fresh thinking. Apple is now outsourcing their design work. Not sure if that was the right direction.

Dude is enjoying life. You should try that too.

Let’s take this opportunity to stop the “thin” madness.
Can never be too thin or too rich. Yes
It’ll be Jeff Williams, but I’d rather have Craig.

I think they’d be smart to take the younger Craig, not just because he’s young enough to give Apple a good ten years to imprint and develop Apple and its new blood, but because of his software expertise as well as his easy way with the public and press.

You think he didn’t work on the new Mac Pro? He just sat down for the past 2-3 years and didn’t do anything you think? You act like the Mac Pro was designed 2 weeks before the announcement lol. It will probably go at least 2 years before the products he has worked on will come out in the future.
Jony has been stepped down from design department since 2015 to focus on Apple Park design. I don’t think he did involve in the design of recent products. We can see that Jony has no say in Apple after Steve Jobs’ death. Apple is no longer design and functionality driven as last time, Tim Cook’s primarily focus is to make more money. Jony said in his last interview, he does not want to design something different, he want to design something to make it better. The Apple nowadays is marketing driven, they listen to the market, they follow market demands, Apple is no longer innovative company under Steve Jobs and Jony Ive.

I remembered Jony said in an interview that he doesn’t want a potruding camera, he doesn’t want Square Apple Watch, he doesn’t want a notch. But Apple is not listening, Apple tend to ignore all this for the functionality.

APPLE LOST THEIR EGOISM in their DESIGN.
God bless Apple.

"He's been handcuffed by the powers at be at Apple"

how so? Word on the street is he had more power than anyone inside Apple
He has to go through approvals to work on designs outside of Apple. He's only done a small handful of things in the last few years. Word on the street is just that.. and it's absolutely wrong! And no I will not indulge further on that.

Is he moving back to the UK? Another thing I wouldn’t be surprised about if he did.

That is the first thing I thought upon hearing the news. I remember reading that he wanted to go back home in the past but did not because of Apple.

This could be a way for him to do that and still work on apple related projects.

I suspect we’re witnessing a discreet changing of the guard. Last WWDC brought many more young people on stage than earlier conferences, Schiller was not to be seen or heard.

What makes you think Schiller is next? I think he's done a great job. Under him, there's renewed focus and excitement in the Mac lineup, the App Stores are much better run vs under Eddy Cue's leadership

Man......This is Crazy! news, i dont this news will ever die, it will keep cropping up now and then for decades. It history in the making and we watching it live.

Johnny did good work in the early days when other people - like Forestal - had more influence. His recent work hasn’t been good in my opinion - too much focus on aesthetics, not enough focus on functionality.

First.. it’s Forstall, Forestal is from the forest in spanish.. second, wtf have to do Scott Forstall which is a software engineer with industrial design of products... Third: Scott never had more influence than Ive, In that time it was 1. Steve 2. Ive, and then the rest... Scott was the soft. Team leader and Ive came to clean his mess adding that task to his primary industrial design VP role... Your whole comment is nonsense.. Probably all Apple products you know (and all from the last 30 years) are designed or touched by Ive....

Newson makes beautiful but slightly pointless, expensive stuff, the kind of stuff most designers love to make. Jony was reined in at Apple forced to constrain his designs with economics of mass production. Both Jony and Apple benefitted from the discipline. I expect the Jony Newson combo will be making over-designed tech like the Porsche LaCie hard drives. It's not that the design doesn't work aesthetically, it's just do you really need a fancy cover for a Samsung hard drive. With tech it's always what's inside that is most important.

On the other hand, Apple badly needs more well-designed peripherals. Software for bathroom scales, cameras etc is usually rubbish. We're at the stage now where there should be an App Store for physical stuff, like monitors, trackers, measuring devices, toys, vehicles, drones, chargers, containers and covers (other than Amazon). Maybe Jony can do something about this.

Ive has being getting a lot of hate lately, but this guy is the genius behind all Apple products since Jobs' return or Apple as we know it today.

Given Apple's design is not as great as it used to be, there are 2 possible solutions for this:
1)The design genius was Jobs all along
2)Ive is the genius, but Tim is forcing him to do fashion over form stuff and including stuff like touchbar.

Not sure who is responsible for Apple GUI designs, but it turned into a horrible experience. I remember when Apple used to have 1 button mice to make it as simple as possible for consumer to figure their way around.
