The fact that the iPhone design hasn't undergone radical changes in years nMP earlier was a dud, it was almost like he used Apple as practice ground for his design ideas to refine his skills and now time is right to cash out and develop something perhaps innovating in his own right? Perhaps new company "Pineapple! heheh

Times are changing.

He's the last connecting tissue to Steve Jobs. Whatever is left are suits and ties.
You sure about that? Cook has been practically the CEO of Apple even while Jobs was still around. Jobs was a product guy, so even though he’s CEO by title, Cook has been the one running the management show part. So all those great years under Jobs already had Cook’s hands in them.

And notch.

Ive is tired, and nothing shows it more than the notch. Perhaps, the thin MBP's too. Oh, and the garbage can. Hmm.

He may be tired, but he allowed his priorities to be more about what the Designer thinks is best, period, rather than thinking what's best for a customer. Such a monumental difference that few see.

Stop arsing around on Instaface and get the right cable then. Be a better human. Don’t blame your failing on someone else.

Only need cables because Jony hates ports. He needed to leave the cupertino coffee shops with high speed wifi and power outlets everywhere and try to do something in the real world with real devices. What's the point of a 1/4" thick computer if you have to carry - literally - a half dozen dongles around in a separate case?

What are Apple’s competitors going to do not having any brilliant designs to rip off any more?

Build computer's that don't have thermal throttling even with underpowered C/GPU's?

exactly - and no headphone jack, limited battery life, an unlock mechanism that violates hands-free laws, inconsistent user interfaces between different devices (even the keyboard layout is different), and near zero-repairability

Everyone saying it’s a good thing. His company is going to design for Apple.

So it’s pretty much going to be business as usual. Johnny will just be able to design for other companies as well.

and

Scott Forstall coming back as new CEO.
That is what Apple was supposed to have. It was Steve’s vision. Tim Cook was supposed to take control through a period of stability. This would allow time for Forstall to finish training, as he was personally groomed by Steve to eventually take over operations. Tim Cook, in my beliefs, saw Forstall as a threat to Tim’s ability to take a ton of profits and stock out as CEO. He never championed any vision of the future. He only kept Apple on a straight line path trying to keep up what I believe were Steve’s final design and tech wishes.

So, Tim hasn’t done what’s best for the company. He has done what’s best for Tim. He has led the company to all time stock highs by buying back way too much stock instead of using profits to build out new technologies. Apple will never be a great visionary company as long as Tim Cook is the CEO. But the Board allows him to push his gay pride, eco conscious and talk via a list of main talking points.

I am not saying there’s anything wrong with gay pride, although I do think Tim should use his own money to spread that cause and it’s a good cause but not the responsibility of Apple. Now, the environmental stances Cook has taken that jobs would have never cared about like using renewable energy seem to be in the best interest not of Apple Shareholders and Stakeholders but of the core ethos of believers of longtime Apple purchasers. However, most people who buy iPhone probably couldn’t care less about that. But, I believe it’s necessary for good leaders to take a stance they believe in that’s good for the world.

In the long run, Tim Cook will be remembered as a great man who was able to grow Apple or AAPL into the valuable company it is - but I believe his key decision to fire chief threat Forstall was the biggest mistake he could make. Ive is important in the industrial design, but Forstall gets the big picture and has revolutionary software ideas. Before you go throwing out words like skeuomorphism and etc. Think about a new iPhone user picking up an iPhone XS/XR for the first time. It’s not intuitive. There’s a learning curve that came from the iPhones before it. This will cause a failure to adopt iPhone from people who may otherwise.

As a strategist, consultant, leader, and lifetime learner, I think Cook has had his time and the Board should do the proper thing and move on to not what will bring instant stability - the markets, economy and Fed will do that now - bring in a visionary, someone who understands users, consumers, and real world leadership. Tim Cook was a good successor to Jobs, but Tim should have never been allowed to fire Forstall. It’s almost like Forstall should have had a seat at the Board and guaranteed right of passage and time after Cook to champion a rebirth of visionary products. I cannot in good hope or faith think that Apple will ever present a revolutionary world changing product again. And if that’s true, it’s just a matter of time before it’s increasingly irrelevant how Apple lost its way, but allowing the executive team to grow older and not bringing in youthful visionaries who may not have had the best business sense but understood customers needs for the future and how AAPL could be a $10T company.

People talk about Forstall being so great. Ok. So what is he exactly doing now then that’s so innovative?
He's become a Tony Award winning producer on Broadway. Not too shabby.

Exactly. I'm not sure what I think about this change. I would rather see a clean break with him than to have Apple hiring on an outside firm to do its design work, even if it is headed by Ive. Apple really needs to keep design in-house and continue to innovate. Hiring an outside firm to handle what is the main distinguishing feature of Apple -- its design -- is IMO a poor route to follow. But I'm happy for them to prove me wrong.
It isn't like he's gonna be having full responsibility of Apple's design function. He's only working as a consultant.

Cook is a business guy. Jobs was a product guy. Jobs warned about letting the financial department ruins things.

He's been handcuffed by the powers at be at Apple. And while he's had the keys to the city inside Apple.. outside he just isn't allowed to explore. Having said that.. unless Apple understands they can put their foot down and look elsewhere.. not much is going to change since he's still going to be working with them. To Be Continued...
"He's been handcuffed by the powers at be at Apple"

how so? Word on the street is he had more power than anyone inside Apple

Oh, wow. This is a historic moment in Apple history.

Historic indeed.

Some take aways ...

Cook's quote obviously shows his lack of connection and knowledge of what Ive brought to the table ...

"Jony is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple's revival cannot be overstated, from 1998's groundbreaking iMac to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where recently he has been putting so much of his energy and care," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "Apple will continue to benefit from Jony's talents by working directly with him on exclusive projects, and through the ongoing work of the brilliant and passionate design team he has built. After so many years working closely together, I'm happy that our relationship continues to evolve and I look forward to working with Jony long into the future."

FYI Tim you moron Ive has been designing insanely great products at Apple since the TAM! The Twentieth Anniversary Mac - for which the special introduction video featured a VERY young Ive - and without his assuming British accent to boot lol - yet that was part of the major marketing Apple benefited from as well.

Anyone else notice Ive's quote says NOTHING about Cook?!

"After nearly 30 years and countless projects, I am most proud of the lasting work we have done to create a design team, process and culture at Apple that is without peer. Today it is stronger, more vibrant and more talented than at any point in Apple's history," said Ive. "The team will certainly thrive under the excellent leadership of Evans, Alan and Jeff, who have been among my closest collaborators. I have the utmost confidence in my designer colleagues at Apple, who remain my closest friends, and I look forward to working with them for many years to come."

Say what you will about this and let the rumor mill fly ... but I'll bet the following products have increased in after market sale price:

The TAM
iPhone 4/4S
iPhone 5S (with it's camphered edges lol)
iMac OG and iMac (super slim like the Pro).

This was a long time coming and I'll bet he's just as super pissed his designs continually get leaked months before product launch.

“Ive is set to leave the company later this year, but Apple will be among his new company's "primary clients."”

Butterfly keyboard gen 4 coming soon

Gen 4 was in 2018 lol ... we're already at Gen 5!

Instead of Ive designing for Apple and getting his salary from them, he will now be Designing for Apple and getting his Salary from them. Same but different.
He will be open to the market now so it means his designs won’t be Apple exclusive anymore.

Hope he won’t work with Lenovo. We want Thinkpad keyboard.

Why? He’s had amazing designs no doubt, but Apple is capable of bringing in all kinds of talent. Jony’s past few designs have not been ground breaking. Apple milked the iPhone 6 design for basically 4 generations. I would argue in some ways, many other Android phones have been on par or better design wise, especially the S10+. I love the notch design and the design of the X style phones in general, but there’s nothing really cutting edge with the iPhone design.
Given that the majority of smartphones are, for the most part, just slabs of glass, there's really nothing groundbreaking about smartphone design in general. It all comes down to features (ie: camera) & software.

Absolutely superb take by John Gruber:

https://daringfireball.net/2019/06/jony_ive_leaves_apple

I agree with Gruber that the new org chart doesn’t make sense. Design shouldn’t be reporting to ops. They need a chief design officer.
They're reporting to Jeff Williams, not to Ops. The new guy in charge of Ops, Sabir Khan (SVP) will also report to Jeff Williams. So essentially Williams is in charge of design & Ops. Jeff Williams has a background in mechanical engineering plus he's instrumental in the success of the Apple Watch. I think he knows a thing or two about design.

He couldn’t play well with others.

I honestly think OTHERS couldn't be as driven and play well with him!

Check out commentary and interviews of ALL major former staff at Apple.
Anyone brought in by Jobs or whom Jobs trusted as close friends: Ave T, Betrand Serlet, Scott Forstall, John Rubinstein ... ALL of them are very happy, calm and chill in all their talk of the work and business at Apple during their time there.

Look at the others that were not close friends with Steve, they're either disgruntled or heavily contributed to the documentary that Steve was someone to revere and be feared and the work pressure was second to non save for King Ramses the II. lol.

THAT is VERY telling. I'd say ONLY Eddie Cue and Phil Schiller are the current employees besides Ive, now leaving, still are happy and were considered friends amongst Jobs and they've NEVER been interviewed as showing any disdain feelings or "shook" when relating to anything at Apple despite what the fans or articles say. you CANNOT say that about anyone else. Tim ... already "apologized" for Maps .. seemingly shooting down Forstall in the same statement.

Tim strengthened Apple's supply chain when it comes to deals and production scale yet now we're seeing the issues with that same setup being VERY restrictive for Apple in the current trade war. As that resolves we'll still see this stiffle Apple in production of products and scale for launches in the future.
